North Korea pulls capsized warship upright after botched launch: Reports
North Korea appears to have returned its stricken Choe Hyun-class destroyer to an upright position after it partially capsized during a botched launching ceremony, US researchers said on Wednesday. Leader Kim Jong Un, who witnessed the failed launch of the 5,000-ton warship, said the accident damaged the country's dignity and vowed to punish those found responsible. Commercial satellite imagery from June 2 showed the destroyer upright for the first time since the May 21 accident, the 38 North program, which studies the nuclear-armed North, said in a report. Since the accident, North Korea has said it detained several officials, and Kim ordered the ship restored before a ruling party meeting this month. 'Commercial satellite imagery shows workers at the port in Chongjin have taken a significant step toward that goal,' 38 North said in its report. Workers were observed pulling tethers, and possibly using barrage balloons, in a manual effort to right the ship, it added. The imagery shows the vessel's bow still on land, with possible damage to its sonar section. 'To repair this, the ship will need to be moved out of the water to either a large floating drydock or graving dock once afloat,' 38 North said. 'However, Chongjin's shipyard does not offer this infrastructure.' The east coast shipyard has turned out primarily cargo and fishing vessels and lacks significant expertise in launching large warships such as the new destroyer, other military experts have said.

North Korea investigating failed launch of warship
North Korea has initiated a probe into an accident that occurred during the launch of its second naval destroyerthis week, state media reported Friday, after leader Kim Jong Un deemed the incident criminal negligence. On Thursday, Pyongyang reported that sections of the bottom of the newly built 5,000-ton naval destroyer were crushed during the Wednesday launch ceremony of the ship at the northeastern port of Chongji. The damage occurred due to a transport cradle on the vessel's stern detaching early, state media said. The country's Central Military Commission summoned Hong Kil Ho, the manager of Chongji the shipyard, as it began investigations into the incident, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Friday. "No matter how good the state of the warship is, the fact that the accident is an unpardonable criminal act remains unchanged, and those responsible for it can never evade their responsibility for the crime," the official news agency cited the commission as saying. Kim — who observed the launch — blasted military officials, scientists and shipyard operators for the incident which he called a "criminal act caused by absolute carelessness". North Korea had earlier called the incident "serious," but on Friday KCNA said that an "underwater and internal inspection of the warship confirmed that, unlike the initial announcement, there were no holes made at the warship's bottom". "The hull starboard was scratched and a certain amount of seawater flowed into the stern section through the rescue channel," the state news agency said. It added that the damage to the vessel was "not serious". The report said that it would take nearly 10 days to repair the vessel's side. The assessments could not be verified due to the isolated nation's reticent nature. South Korea's military said earlier that based on the ship's size and scale, it is believed to be similarly equipped to the Choe Hyon, a destroyer-class vessel that the North unveiled last month. Analysts say it is North Korea's biggest and most advanced warship to date. Seoul claims the Choe Hyon could have been developed with Russia's help, possibly in exchange for North Korea deploying thousands of soldiers to assist Moscow in its war with Ukraine. Two confirmed dead following Japanese training plane crash
Two Japanese air force members died shortly after their training aircraft crashed last week, the air force chief confirmed on Thursday. The T-4 plane, carrying two crew members, crashed into a reservoir minutes after taking off from Komaki Air Base in central Japan's Aichi prefecture on May 14. Autopsies revealed both crew members, aged 29 and 31, died just two minutes after takeoff, according to Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, prompting the grounding of all 196 remaining T-4 training aircraft for emergency inspections. Witnesses at the time told the NHK national broadcaster that they heard a loud noise like thunder, followed by sirens of police cars and fire engines. Defence Minister Gen Nakatani previously said the T-4 plane, which operates out of Nyutabaru air base, in the southern prefecture of Miyazaki, was heading back to its home base on an unspecified mission. Officials previously searched an area near the Iruka pond reservoir, approximately six miles northeast of the base and near the city of Inuyama, where debris from the aircraft has been discovered. This incident is the latest in a string of defense aircraft accidents in recent years, coinciding with Japan 's accelerated military buildup in response to China 's growing regional influence. Japan's doubled defense spending has raised concerns that weapons procurement may be prioritised over safety measures.
