Richard Wilkins shares head-scratching Tom Cruise selfie ahead of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning release

Richard Wilkins has shared an eyebrow-raising new selfie with movie star Tom Cruise that appeared to shrink the legendary movie star. Cruise, 62, is currently on the junket circuit to promote Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, in what will mark the eighth installment of the iconic action film series. One of the movie star's stops was a sit down with legendary Nine entertainment journalist Richard Wilkins, who took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at their chat. 'Always a pleasure to catch up with the great @tomcruise,' Wilkins wrote. '#missionimpossiblethefinalreckoning is a beast of a movie! Bigger, faster, higher, deeper… this guy keeps raising the bar... and then jumping over it again… and again! 'Mission Control… this week on @thetodayshow.' Bizarrely, the selfie appeared to show Cruise looking completely dwarfed next to Wilkins. While the size disparity was likely the result of a distorted camera lens, the optical illusion appeared to accentuate Cruise's much-speculated real height. The legendary movie star's true height has been the matter of fierce debate for decades, with most outlets reporting that Cruise stands at about 1.7 metres tall. Other outlets, such as The Guardian, have estimated Cruise at closer to 1.67 metres tall, which would put Cruise on par with stars like Al Pacino, Ben Stiller and Kendrick Lamar. Cruise's height was also a frequent topic of tabloid conversation during his decade-long marriage to statuesque Aussie star Nicole Kidman, who is reportedly about 1.8 metres tall. Following their high profile divorce in 2001, Kidman infamously remarked 'at least I can wear heels now' during a late night talk show appearance. The selfie comes just days after Cruise made a rare comment about Kidman, with whom he shares daughter Isabella and son Connor. Cruise recently spoke to Sight and Sound magazine, where he reflected on his 1999 psychological drama Eyes Wide Shut, directed by Stanley Kubrick. During the chat, Cruise revealed it was his idea to cast then-wife Kidman as his co-star. "It was a great experience. I was very excited to do it," he told the publication. "I knew Stanley's movies very well and I was introduced to him through Sydney Pollack. So Stanley called Sydney 'cause he wanted me to make a movie. "Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other and when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role (of Alice). 'Because obviously she's a great actress." Eyes Wide Shut marked the third and final time the couple were paired together onscreen, following Far and Away and Days of Thunder, where they first met.
