Forest Lake detours begin as MnDOT undertakes $17M Highway 97 reconstruction project

Both directions of Minnesota 97 between Hornsby Street and Falcon Avenue in Forest Lake will be closed beginning 5 a.m. Monday. The closure will remain in place through late fall, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The work is part of a two-year, $17 million reconstruction of Minnesota 97 between Interstate 35 and U.S. 61 that includes resurfacing the road, constructing a single-lane roundabout at Fenway Avenue and adding turn lanes in specific locations. In addition, a new multi-use trail will be constructed along the south side of Minnesota 97 to provide a safer space for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as a connection to the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail. A raised median also will be added to divide eastbound and westbound traffic on the two-lane roadway; the median also will serve as an accessible pedestrian crossing. Minnesota 97 will be open to traffic between Falcon Avenue and U.S. 61, and Hornsby Street and all I-35 ramps will remain open, according to a MnDOT news release. Local residential and business access will be maintained throughout construction, although routes will change periodically, the release states. Motorists can bypass the closure using the following detours: Eastbound through traffic can use northbound I-35 to eastbound U.S. 8 to southbound U.S. 61 Westbound through traffic can use northbound U.S. 61 to westbound U.S. 8 to southbound I-35 Southbound I-35 traffic can access eastbound Minnesota 97 by using Broadway Avenue to northbound I-35 to eastbound U.S. 8 to southbound U.S. 61. All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule dependent and subject to change, according to MnDOT. Snelling Avenue and St. Clair Avenue intersection closing intermittently

The intersection of Snelling and St. Clair avenues will be closed intermittently beginning Friday as construction in the area wraps up. The intersection will shut down at 6 a.m. Friday, May 30, and open again at 6 a.m. Sunday, June 1, to accommodate Grand Old Day traffic. The intersection will be shut down again at 9 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday, then again from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, when work is expected to be complete. The resurfacing of a half-mile of Snelling Avenue between St. Clair and Grand avenues began last year and includes building bump-outs and ADA-compliant crossings at all intersections. The work wraps up with replacement of the signal system at Snelling and St. Clair avenues and resurfacing of the intersection and installing ADA-compliant crossings. Interstate 494 closure slated for this weekend in Bloomington-Richfield area

Both directions of Interstate 494 between Minnesota highways 100 and 77 will be closed Friday, May 30, through Monday morning, June 2, for bridge work, state transportation officials said. Before the freeway is shut down at 10 p.m. Friday, all ramps along the route will close at 8 p.m. The freeway will open again at 5 a.m. Monday. The closure is due to construction of a pedestrian bridge over I-494 near Chicago Avenue and the removal of the Portland Avenue bridge for reconstruction, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Motorists will be directed to Minnesota 62 via 100 and 77 as a detour. Forest Lake: MnDOT to host public meeting on $17M construction project

Starting this spring, Minnesota 97 in Forest Lake will be reconstructed between Interstate 35 and U.S. 61 to improve traffic flow and safety. The $17 million project will include resurfacing the road, constructing a single-lane roundabout at Fenway Avenue, and adding turn lanes in specific locations. A new multi-use trail will be constructed along the south side of 97 to provide a safer space for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as a connection to the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail. In addition, a raised median will be added to divide eastbound and westbound traffic on the two-lane roadway; the median also will serve as an accessible pedestrian crossing. Construction will be done in two stages over a two-year period, with one half of the road under construction each year. Construction is scheduled to be done in the fall of 2026. A public meeting for residents to learn more about the project will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday in the Forest Lake City Center's second-floor community room. Project staff from the Minnesota Department of Transportation will be available to provide information about the project and answer questions. There will be no formal presentation, and attendees are welcome to arrive anytime during the meeting. Voting begins to help MnDOT name eight snowplows statewide

Jan. 28—Voting is now open on the list of finalists for the 2024-25 Name a Snowplow contest, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced today. The top eight vote-getters will become new MnDOT snowplow names, one new name for each MnDOT district. See the list of finalists and vote now at Voting will remain open through noon on Friday, Feb. 7. Individuals will be able to vote once and select up to eight of their favorite names. MnDOT received more than 7,300 snowplow name submissions in December and staff reviewed the suggestions to help select 50 finalists for public voting. The agency considered a variety of factors, including uniqueness, frequency of submissions, Minnesota-specific ideas, and names that would be easily identifiable and understandable to most audiences. Winning names will be announced in February. Minnesotans are encouraged to follow @mndot on Facebook, X and Instagram for updates on the Name a Snowplow contest, and to see winter weather alerts, safety messages, project updates and more. This is MnDOT's fifth Name a Snowplow contest. In addition to the 32 named snowplows selected through previous contests, MnDOT staff have also helped to name four additional snowplows: Giiwedin-The North Wind; Goonodaabaan-Snow Vehicle (both Ojibwe); Icamna-Blizzard and Wakta!-Watch Out! (both Dakota) in acknowledgement of the highways the state plows adjacent to tribal lands.
