Heavy rain in Mumbai: SpiceJet issues travel advisory as city reels under showers again

Credit: PTI NEW DELHI: Heavy rainfall continued to pound several parts of Mumbai on Wednesday, disrupting daily life and causing waterlogging in low-lying areas. As weather-related disruptions mounted, SpiceJet issued an advisory on social media platform X, warning passengers of potential delays. 'Due to bad weather in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected,' the airline said in a statement on social media platform X. Passengers were advised to check their flight status via the airline's official website. In an another development, a barge engaged in Mumbai's Coastal Road project work drifted and became stranded in mud near Mahim coast due to torrential rains. The vessel was stuck near Hinduja Hospital and efforts were underway to refloat it during high tide, with help from technical experts. IMD predicts more rain The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted moderate to heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs on Wednesday, with a possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in isolated areas. Heavy showers on Tuesday The heavy showers, particularly in south Mumbai, triggered waterlogging in several areas, including the Khar locality on Tuesday. Streets along Swami Vivekananda Road near National College were partially submerged, forcing vehicles and pedestrians to wade through waterlogged roads. Commuters faced major delays during peak hours as traffic slowed across multiple key routes. 106% LPA during June-September Meanwhile, the IMD updated its monsoon forecast, projecting that India will likely receive 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall during the June-September monsoon season—an upward revision from its earlier forecast of 105%. The LPA for India stands at 868.6 mm. The department said above-normal rainfall is expected across most of the country, particularly over Central and South Peninsular India. Normal rainfall is likely over Northwest India, while parts of Northeast and East India are expected to see below-normal precipitation. For the month of June specifically, the IMD forecasted above-normal rainfall over most of the country, with exceptions in some southern parts of Peninsular India and parts of Northwest and Northeast regions where below-normal rainfall is anticipated.

Driver claimed ‘kidnap by Islamic male' after crashing drink-drive vehicle

A POLISH motorist who crashed his car after driving over the legal alcohol limit told police he had been kidnapped and held to ransom by an Islamic male threatening to harm his friend. However, the claim was not accepted by police, prosecutor Sian Vaughan told Haverfordwest magistrates this week, as 47-year-old Pawel Stasiak appeared in the dock. Stasiak, of Little Road, Hayes, London, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance. The incident began just before 9:00pm on May 9, when Stasiak was seen walking out of the Co-op store in Pembroke. A witness saw him bend down to speak to some children, and believed an inappropriate word had been said. Stasiak then shook the children's hands and got into his car. 'He was then seen driving the wrong way against the flow of traffic,' said Ms Vaughan. 'He was also seen making a praying gesture with his hands before driving off at speed.' Minutes later, his Toyota RAV4 was found crashed at the entrance to Newton Farm campsite, near Freshwater West. The vehicle had mounted a grass verge, smashed through a fence, and come to rest with Stasiak in the driver's seat and a dog beside him. He then got out and walked into a nearby field. 'He appeared either intoxicated or in shock, as he was staggering around,' Ms Vaughan said. Police arrived at the scene but Stasiak initially refused a roadside breath test, claiming he had been kidnapped by an Islamic male and was being ransomed due to threats made against a friend. He was arrested and taken into custody, where he later provided breath samples with a reading of 60 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35. Supported by a Polish interpreter in court, Stasiak became emotional as he addressed the magistrates. 'I had a huge problem with alcohol, but I stopped drinking for ten years,' he said. 'Then my brother passed away in December, and since then, everything has come back.' Magistrates disqualified him from driving for 20 months. He was fined £161 and ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £64 victim surcharge.

World leaders may be ‘deterred' from visiting the White House following Trump's confrontation

US political analyst Aidan Smith has suggested other world leaders may be 'deterred' from visiting the White House after US President Donald Trump confronted his South African counterpart. Mr Smith's comments come after President Trump mounted an ambush against South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during his visit to the White House, playing a montage of clips and images showing rhetoric against white Afrikaners. 'It's hard to imagine that this won't just lead to more world leaders being deterred to visit the White House,' Mr Smith told Sky News Australia.

Volatility at PSX, KSE-100 up nearly 250 points

A volatile session was observed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index swinging in both directions before posting a gain of nearly 250 points during intra-day trading. The market opened trading on a positive note, pushing the benchmark index to an intra-day high of 120,285.54. However, profit-taking eroded most of the gains and dragged the index to an intra-day low of 119,250.67. Optimism returned to the bourse in the final hours of trading, and by 3pm, the benchmark index was hovering at 119,893.65, an increase of 244.51 points or 0.2%. Analysts say that market participants remain cautious amid concerns surrounding the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) 11 conditions tied to Pakistan's upcoming federal budget. Meanwhile, the IMF, in its latest report, has revised downward GDP growth for Pakistan to 2.6% for the outgoing fiscal year 2024-25 from the October projection of 3.2%, based on the weaker activity in the first half (H1) and broader global uncertainty. During the previous week, the PSX experienced a strong rebound and recorded its highest week-on-week (WoW) gain in five years, following the announcement of a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, which fuelled a significant market rally. The benchmark KSE-100 Index surged by 12,474 points, or 11.6% week-on-week (WoW), closing at 119,649 points up from 107,174.64 points in the previous week. Internationally, Asian shares slipped on Monday as a mixed bag of Chinese economic data showed the domestic economy was struggling even as US tariffs began to bite into exports, while the White House kept up its rhetorical pressure on trade partners. Wall Street share futures also slipped with the dollar, while Treasury yields rose as concerns about erratic US economic policies were underlined by Moody's downgrade of the country's credit rating. Unease over the United States' $36 trillion of debt has also mounted as Republicans seek to approve a sweeping package of tax cuts, which some estimate could add $3 trillion to $5 trillion in new debt over the next decade. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent used television interviews on Sunday to dismiss the downgrade, while warning trade partners they would be hit with maximum tariffs if they did not offer deals in 'good faith'. Bessent is off to a G7 meeting this week for more talks, while US Vice President JD Vance and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met on Sunday to discuss trade. The tariff war has weighed heavily on consumer sentiment and analysts will be scouring earnings from Home Depot and Target this week for an update on spending trends. In markets, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan eased 0.2%, with Japan's Nikkei down 0.6%. Chinese blue chips eased 0.4% as retail sales missed forecasts for April, while industrial output slowed but not by as much as feared. This is an intra-day update

'It is described as 'quiet'… even on its lowest setting it is distractingly noisy,' one review noted. 'I have returned this in favour of something quieter.' Still, many agree it's great value for the price. As one reviewer summed it up: 'For the price it is amazing. I'm using it on the lowest setting and it's blowing out a nice amount of cool air.'
