4 Local School Districts receive grants from NNYCF

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Winners of the Community Foundation's Class of 2025 Scholarship Challenge have been named. The four winning school districts across Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties earned a share of $5,000 in grant funding. Lewis County's South Lewis Central School District is the top grant winner, with 32% of 47 seniors submitting scholarship applications. Winning school districts receiving a $1,000 grant are: LaFargeville Central School, with 56% of its 39 seniors submitting applications; Copenhagen Central Schoo,l with 50% of its 22 seniors submitting applications; and Lisbon Central School with 37% of its 46 seniors submitting applications. Schools were selected for grant awards at random during two Community Foundation Facebook Live events. Grant funding may be used to support a schoolwide initiative or project chosen by the senior class officers. The Scholarship Challenge was open to all schools in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. To be eligible, schools had to achieve at least 25% participation from their senior class in submitting scholarship applications by the Foundation's March 15 deadline. 'It was great to see the schools participate in a spirited competition, especially knowing that by increasing the participation rate, everyone wins,' said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. 'We are grateful for everyone who helped make this our most successful year ever, which will better enable us to align the needs of local students with the generosity of donors.' A record 24% of the 2,472 members of the Class of 2025 in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties applied for Community Foundation scholarship support by this year's deadline. Jefferson County — 30% of the 1,181 seniors from 13 school districts; Lewis County — 30% of the 261 seniors from five school districts; and St. Lawrence County — 16% of the 1,030 seniors from 18 school districts. 'At the same time, this allows us to provide greater options for donors who have an interest in inspiring those who are looking to better themselves and our communities in a variety of ways.' Students of all ages, including recent high school graduates, adult learners, and working professionals, can benefit from an extended educational program to obtain degrees, certifications, or technical credentials for their career goals. Residents in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties can apply for financial assistance through the Next Step Education Program. This program helps those who have postponed their education or need skill improvements for better jobs. Donors support this initiative to enable community members to access the necessary training to accomplish their objectives. The Next Step Education Program supports a wide range of educational and professional development pathways, including: Micro-credentials and professional certifications to strengthen skills or secure employment Courses or programs that lead to a degree Technical and trade school training for hands-on, high-demand careers Enhanced skills programs for career advancement or to help obtain new employment, such as Microsoft Office programs and more Programs at local BOCES campuses Professional licensing programs, including CDL and other industry-specific certifications Award amounts are up to $2,000, and may be used for tuition, books, and course-related expenses Applications for the Next Step Education Program are accepted throughout the year, with funding decisions made every 30 days. NNYCF's Sawyer Community Fund helps improve safety for Western Town Library patrons

WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – A $2,226 grant from the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation will help strengthen safety or patrons at the Western Town Library. Grant support will be used to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) to give the library critical safety support in case of emergencies during operating hours or community events. A total of 13 grants coming to $57,446 were awarded last year from the Sawyer Community Fund to support projects and programs that broadly impact the quality of life for residents in Boonville, Constableville and Westernville. The Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund was established in 2018 as a geographic-specific fund to support programs, projects and initiatives that broadly impact and enhance the quality of life in Boonville, Constableville, and Westernville in perpetuity. The Sawyers were passionate about the quality of life in their community, participating in many community activities and volunteering for several local organizations. Through the community fund, the Sawyer family established a lasting charitable resource that will positively impact these communities forever. NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Northern New York Community Foundation has announced a new challenge to inspire greater participation in its scholarship program from the Class of 2025 and give schools a chance to win a share of up to $5,000 in grant support. The scholarship challenge is open to all schools in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. The Community Foundation's scholarship program supports graduating seniors pursuing further education — whether at an accredited college, university, technical, or trade school. Apply Now: NNYCF Offers Scholarships for Fall 2025 'With an increasing number and variety of opportunities available to support students, we hope this incentive will help build the widest pool of applicants across our region,' said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. 'If this challenge is successful, it will be a win for all as students will benefit directly, their schools may receive additional funding, and our donors will have the best opportunity provide help in the most meaningful ways.' There are two ways schools have a chance to win grant support: $1,000 grant to a school in each of the three counties it serves. To be eligible, schools must achieve at least 25% participation from their senior class in submitting scholarship applications by Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. The top nine schools — three from each county — with the highest overall participation rates by Saturday, March 15, application deadline, will be eligible to win a $2,000 grant. Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge Awards $10,000 for 10 NNY nonprofits Last year, 19% of all high school seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties applied for NNYCF scholarship support: 26% in Jefferson County; 22% in Lewis County; and 10% of St. Lawrence County seniors completed a scholarship application.
