Rutgers football safety Jett Elad ruled eligible for 2025 following court decision
Rutgers football safety Jett Elad has won a preliminary injunction that will grant him eligibility for the 2025 season, according to a decision released by United States District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi on Friday. Elad, who transferred to Rutgers from UNLV, filed a lawsuit against the NCAA hoping to block the institution from enforcing its five-year rule, which allows for four competitive seasons in a five-year timeframe. Elad and Rutgers argued that Elad's year at Garden City Community College in 2022 should not count toward his eligibility. This will be Elad's seventh season of college football. He previously spent three years at Ohio University before his JUCO year – he redshirted in 2019 and 2020, which didn't count toward his eligibility after the NCAA issued a waiver to all athletes because of the pandemic. Much of the reason for Elad's argument stemmed from the ruling the NCAA made on Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback who won an NCAA injunction before last season after he argued his JUCO year shouldn't count toward his eligibility clock. In December, the NCAA announced that athletes would be eligible for 2025-26 if they competed at a 'non-NCAA school for one or two years' previously and would have exhausted their eligibility following the 2024-25 year. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano testified in Elad's case. The court's decision is a major win for the Scarlet Knights, who will have one of their top impact transfers available next season. Lady Vols forward Favor Ayodele enters transfer portal after Kim Caldwell's first season
Lady Vols basketball forward Favor Ayodele has entered the transfer portal, a source told Knox News on Wednesday. The source requested anonymity because there hasn't been a public announcement. Ayodele spent one season at Tennessee and was part of the five-player transfer class Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell and her staff brought in last spring. Ayodele, who transferred from Pitt, had a limited role this season. Advertisement Ayodele averaged 5.7 minutes and only appeared in 15 games. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged one point and 1.7 rebounds. She's the second player to enter the transfer portal following Caldwell's first season leading the Lady Vols. Junior guard Avery Strickland entered the transfer portal on April third as a grad transfer after two seasons at Tennessee. Strickland also had a limited role this season. The fifth-year senior has one year of eligibility left due to the waiver approved by the NCAA Division I Board of the Directors in December after Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia sued the NCAA. The waiver gives athletes an extra year of eligibility in 2025-26 if they previously competed at non-NCAA schools for one or more years and would have exhausted NCAA eligibility after 2024-25. Ayodele, who's from Móstoles, Spain, has only played two seasons in NCAA Division I. She played three seasons at different junior colleges before playing at Pitt in 2023-24. Ayodele played at Indian River State College, Eastern Florida State College and Independence Community College. She was a second team NJCAA All-American as a junior and a first team NJCAA All-American as a sophomore. Advertisement Cora Hall covers University of Tennessee women's athletics. Denzel Aberdeen and Sam Alexis entering transfer portal after helping Florida win national title
Associated Press Denzel Aberdeen and Sam Alexis have entered the transfer portal, planning to leave Florida after helping the school win the men's basketball national championship. Aberdeen and Alexis announced their moves on Friday, joining Gators guard Kajus Kublickas in the portal. The 6-foot-5 Aberdeen appeared to be in line to start in the backcourt next season, but is looking to play elsewhere after former Princeton guard Xaivian Lee recently committed to transfer to Florida. The Gators are also losing All-American Walter Clayton Jr., along with fellow standout guards Alijah Martin and Will Richard. All three expect to play professionally next season. Aberdeen averaged 7.7 points last season, starting in five of 39 games. He averaged five points a game over the last three seasons. Aberdeen scored a career-high 22 points, making 5 of 7 3-pointers, against South Carolina and had 20 points in two other games late in the season. Alexis scored 4.7 points a game as a reserve in 24 games last season, one year after the 6-9 forward averaged nearly 11 points as a sophomore at Chattanooga. Earlier in the week, Auburn guard Chad Baker-Mazara and Memphis star PJ Haggerty entered the transfer portal. Baker-Mazara, who turned 25 in January, started 34 games and was the Tigers' second-leading scorer last season. He averaged a career-high 12.3 points during Auburn's run to the Final Four. Baker-Mazara has one year of eligibility left because of a temporary waiver giving student-athletes who previously competed at a non-NCAA school a fourth season at an NCAA school in 2025-26. All-American and leading scorer Johni Broome, Denver Jones, Dylan Cardwell and Miles Kelly have used up their college eligibility, taking away Auburn's entire starting five from last season's top-seeded overall team in the NCAA tournament. Haggerty was the nation's third-leading scorer last season, averaging 21.7 points along with 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 steals while helping Memphis play in the NCAA Tournament. He scored 18 points on 7-for-23 shooting in a first-round loss to Colorado State. Haggerty will be headed for his fourth program in four years. He appeared in six games as a freshman for TCU, then averaged 21.2 points as a redshirt freshman at Tulsa before making the move within the American Athletic Conference to Memphis. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
