NJ students will be able to visit 9/11 Memorial & Museum for free, Murphy announces
New Jersey schools will be able to send students on field trips to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in lower Manhattan thanks to a public-private initiative. The program will fund both in-person and virtual field trips as part of a collaboration among the state, the museum and the Wilf Family Foundations. The new public-private initiative will fund student visits to the museum at no cost in an effort to expand access to 9/11 education. There will be self-guided school visits for students in grades three to 12 to help teachers engage them in age-appropriate lessons about the historical significance of 9/11, the stories of those who were killed, the heroism of those who responded and rebuilt, and the values of resilience, empathy and civic responsibility. Mike Kelly: Why can't we really confront Saudi support of the 9/11 attacks? Will we ever? 'The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks left a profound mark on New Jersey families, and the memory of that painful day remains as important as ever,' Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement. 'For so many of us — whether we watched on television, from across the Hudson River, or the streets of lower Manhattan — we will never forget the events of 9/11. Now, there is a whole generation for whom 9/11 is just images on TV or in a history book. These field trips will ensure our students understand what happened on 9/11 and its connection to our communities, helping them to navigate the challenges of today's world with knowledge and empathy.' New companion resources created with support from the Wilf Family Foundations will complement the experience. 'The effects of 9/11 reached far beyond New York City, impacting families across New Jersey and the tri-state area,' said Zygi Wilf of the foundation. 'We are proud to support helping New Jersey students experience the museum for free so that a new generation can understand the history and never forget the lessons of that day, helping to preserve the memory of those killed while fostering a deeper understanding of our shared past.' It is unclear whether the program will include transportation expenses for schools interested in visiting the museum. Katie Sobko covers the New Jersey Statehouse. Jack Ciattarelli, GOP frontrunner for governor, notches Donald Trump's endorsement
President Donald Trump endorsed former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli Monday in the bitterly contested Republican primary for governor. Ciattarelli, a one-time harsh Trump critic who once derided Trump as a 'charlatan," had been locked in a fierce competition for Trump's blessing with his chief rival, the former right-wing radio host Bill Spadea from Princeton. 'Jack Ciattarelli is a terrific America First Candidate, NEW JERSEY!' Trump wrote on his Truth Social site. 'Jack, who after getting to know and understand MAGA, has gone ALL IN, and is now 100% (PLUS!). He is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected Leaders in New Jersey and, as your next Governor, Jack Ciattarelli will work closely with me and the Trump Administration to advance our America First Agenda.' The move will cement Ciatarelli's standing as the putative nominee. He maintained a double digit lead in a recent Rutgers University-Eagleton Institute poll over Spadea. State Sen. Jon Bramnick of Union County, notched a distant third place. Charlie Stile: Ronald Reagan welcomed immigrants. GOP candidates for NJ governor? Not so much Spadea had ardently embraced Trump's 'America First' agenda on his former radio Trenton area radio show, and even succeeded in getting Trump to call in to his show last year, where the two men lavished praise on each other. And while Ciattarelli has expressed a more measured support for Trump's policies. But by endorsing Ciattarelli, Trump had sided with the clear favorite to win the June 10 primary. And his endorsement Monday has all but ensured it. 'Truly humbled and honored to receive President Trump's very strong endorsement today," Ciattarelli wrote on X, the social media platform. 'It's time to unite our party, win big in November, and make New Jersey affordable and safe again. When I'm governor, we will.' Charlie Stile is a veteran New Jersey political columnist.
