Solo female traveler teaches Karen a lesson during bizarre restaurant encounter
A solo traveler sparked an internet uproar by sharing her bold response to a bizarre encounter she had with a mom who took issue with her drinking wine. Redditor nurseB89 claimed she was enjoying a relaxing all-inclusive trip to Tenerife, the largest of Spain 's Canary Islands, when a mother-of-three complained about her alcohol consumption. The baffled user explained her hotel had 'club style seating,' meaning she was sat near strangers while she ate her meals. When the incident occurred, she said she was the first to sit down at the table and was sipping a glass of wine when she was joined by a family of five, two parents and three children. Trouble arose when the mother noticed her choice of beverage. 'We do not wish to expose our children to women drinking alcohol,' the bothered mom bluntly said, leaving the wine-drinking woman stunned. Hoping to remain cordial without backing down, nurseB89 said she simply smiled and suggested the mother and her family move tables - but this only made matters worse. 'They noticed I was on my own and made passive aggressive comments about this,' the user wrote. Sharing her strange interaction with tens of thousands of people on Reddit , she asked, 'AITA [am I the a******] for ordering alcohol?' She then went to go get food from the buffet. When she returned, her wine glass was missing. 'A waiter came over and asked to see my wrist band (for the all inclusive) and said the family had told them I was underage and must have sneaked away from my parents,' the fed-up vacationer wrote. After sorting it out with the employee, she was given a new glass of wine just as the family returned to the table with their food. With no intentions of appeasing the 'Karen' mom now, she decided to take advantage of the all-inclusive resort - ordering an entire bottle of wine and a couple of vodka shots. 'The family stormed out the [restaurant] when I drank the shots as they arrived at the table!' she announced. Sharing her strange interaction with tens of thousands of people on Reddit, she asked, 'AITA [am I the a******] for ordering alcohol?' With more than 32,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments, social media users had plenty to say about the situation. 'It's just WOMEN drinking alcohol. What the heck is that about? It's clearly not an issue with alcohol as much as it is with women. Sheesh,' someone reacted. With more than 32,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments, social media users had plenty to say about the situation 'I can't believe this situation. She doesn't want to expose her children to seeing someone drink alcohol, but she's willing to expose her children to her own lying!' another wrote. Many users commended her actions and said they would have done the same thing. 'You are an absolute legend for requesting the full bottle of wine and vodka shots. This level of pettiness is something we should all aspire to,' one user said. One person said it was 'an interesting way to get your point across' and another admitted it was a 'total AH move' but ultimately thought it was called for. Beyond Reddit, an etiquette expert has chimed into the heated discussion, telling Fox Digital the mother's behavior was 'inappropriate.' 'On a vacation, where the tables are open for anyone to sit, a guest should be able to order whatever they would like,' Diane Gottsman, founder and owner of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, told the outlet. 'If the mother does not want her children exposed to alcohol, it's a personal, family preference and the rest of the table should not be expected to follow her self-imposed rule. 'If the mother was that opposed, she should have gotten up and taken her family to another table.'

Woman drinking wine teaches pushy mother a lesson after family tries to intervene
A woman who was on an all-inclusive vacation in the Canary Islands said she took a stand against a mother who objected to her drinking alcohol at their shared dining table. Reddit user "nurseB89" shared her recent experience on a forum in which people question whether they're in the wrong. The woman said the hotel where she was staying had club-style seating, with eight people per table paired together "to encourage a sense of community and conversation." "Last night, I was seated first and had a glass of wine," the woman wrote. Soon after, she was joined by two adults and three children who were seated at her table. The mother of that family turned to the woman and said, "We do not wish to expose our children to women drinking alcohol." "I smiled and said perhaps they should ask to move tables if it was an issue, but I would be drinking the wine," the woman on Reddit wrote. "They noticed I was on my own and made passive-aggressive comments about this." Later, the woman got up from the table to get some food from the buffet – and when she returned, "the wine had disappeared," she wrote. A waiter came over and asked to see her wristband, an indicator of all-inclusive access. He said that "the family had told them I was underage and must have sneaked away from my parents," nurseB89 wrote. The waiter "was very apologetic and returned with a fresh glass of wine just as the family came back with their food." Instead of requesting to move to another table, the woman asked for the "full bottle, along with a couple of shots of vodka," she said. The family finally "stormed out" after she drank the shots in front of them, she continued. "What about men drinking alcohol? Is that OK?" The woman's story sparked over 2,000 comments, with others mostly agreeing with her and questioning the actions of the mother. "Then don't take your kids to places where alcohol is served," wrote one commented in part. "It's just WOMEN drinking alcohol. What the heck is that about?" wrote another. "It's clearly not an issue with alcohol as much as it is with women. Sheesh." Said yet another person, "What about men drinking alcohol? Is that OK?" Other commenters suggested the mother's morals seem misguided. "I can't believe this situation," wrote one Reddit user. "She doesn't want to expose her children to seeing someone drink alcohol, but she's willing to expose her children to her own lying!" "Lying or hypocrisy?" asked another user. "Bet the husband drinks and maybe she does when the kids are in bed. Trying to control someone else is sheer arrogance. Get another table, lady, and eat blindfolded." Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, founder and owner of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, told Fox News Digital that in her view, the mother's behavior was "inappropriate." "She should have gotten up and taken her family to another table." "On a vacation, where the tables are open for anyone to sit, a guest should be able to order whatever they would like," Gottsman said. "If the mother does not want her children exposed to alcohol, it's a personal, family preference and the rest of the table should not be expected to follow her self-imposed rule." Gottsman added, "If the mother was that opposed, she should have gotten up and taken her family to another table." Fox News Digital reached out to nurseB89 for additional information.

Solo Traveler Gets Last Laugh After Family Tries to Ruin Her Evening: 'Stormed Out'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A solo traveler got the last laugh following a "passive aggressive" altercation with a family at a resort in Tenerife, Spain. The traveler, aka nurseB89 on Reddit, explained that she opted for an all-inclusive hotel on the island to avoid dining alone in unfamiliar places. Immediate Objection The hotel's club-style seating arrangement grouped guests at shared tables of eight, which led to them being placed with a family of five during dinner. The original poster (OP) wrote that she was already enjoying a glass of wine when the family joined their table. The mother immediately objected, saying, "we do not wish to expose our children to women drinking alcohol." The traveler replied that they were welcome to switch tables if it was an issue, but she would not be changing her plans. Stock image: Woman in a bathrobe standing near a window in a bathroom. When she returned, a waiter explained that the family had falsely claimed she was underage and sneaking away from her parents. After checking her wristband, the waiter apologized and returned with a fresh glass. Rather than back down, the traveler leaned into the moment. She asked the waiter to bring her the entire wine bottle and a couple of vodka shots. As she downed one, the family arrived back at the table—and stormed out. 'Better they check!' In reply to an invitation to comment from Newsweek via Reddit, user nurseB89 said she has not seen the family around the hotel since their exchange. "Regretted the vodka today as I actually don't drink that much, or done shots since university days! I often get ID'd for alcohol and it [is] better they check!" The OP noted that, "a lot people have posted on the post about different religions [and] cultures, but they appeared to be a typical British family." Gender and Judgment at the Dinner Table After the family left the restaurant "storming out," as the traveler put it, others at the resort offered support to the woman. Staff and guests expressed disbelief that anyone would take offense at someone drinking legally in a place that caters to adults. Many Reddit critics shared their incredulity, amid more than 1,800 comments within 24 hours, such as the person who remarked: "What family goes to an all inclusive in Tenerife and doesn't expect to see women drinking alcohol! "They will have to blindfold the children." Another individual made a point: "It's just WOMEN drinking alcohol. What the heck is that about? It's clearly not an issue with alcohol as much as it is with women. Sheesh." Solo Travelers Face Uninvited Scrutiny Some folks online drew connections between the OP's experience and broader issues faced by women traveling alone. Two Newsweek articles highlight how solo travelers often report facing criticism, or placing unfair limits on themselves. Newsweek reported how one solo traveler saw her trip turn romantic after meeting another traveler and their relationship "clicked instantly." However, the traveler shared her story telling others, "don't make the same mistake." Another woman said she budgeted "too hard" during her solo vacation that it limited her ability to enjoy it. Newsweek reported that the traveler went to Sri Lanka and found she had prepared more money than she needed. Newsweek's "What Should I Do?" offers expert advice to readers.
