Yankees careful with Chisholm as he pushes to skip rehab
The New York Yankees are trying to take a cautious approach with Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s oblique injury. Chisholm, however, is in a hurry as usual. From the moment he went down with the injury, the timelines haven't exactly lined up. Chisholm initially told reporters he expected to be back in about three weeks. Manager Aaron Boone quickly called that 'ambitious,' and the Yankees put the window closer to four to six weeks. Advertisement Now, Chisholm's hoping to cut another corner. 'I don't like to do rehab assignments,' Chisholm told the New York Post. 'I've never really been a fan of it.' 'I would think whether it's a game, whether it's a game or two, we'll probably do something,' Boone said. 'But it's not something we've talked about really yet.' It's not unusual for players and teams to view recovery windows differently, especially with soft-tissue injuries. Obliques are notoriously tricky. The Yankees don't want to rush one of their most dynamic players back only to lose him again in July. Advertisement But Chisholm is a competitor, and he's trying to beat this injury. A player's mindset doesn't always match the trainer's schedule. Through 125 plate appearances, Chisholm is hitting .213 with a .440 slugging percentage and a .317 wOBA, according to Baseball Savant. His advanced metrics suggest potential for improvement, with an expected wOBA (xwOBA) of .338 and a barrel rate of 14.9%, indicating he's making quality contact. However, his strikeout rate is 31.2%, and his average exit velocity is 87.9 mph, slightly below league average. Yankees Await MRI to Decide Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s IL Fate
Despite his jovial post-game comments, Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was out of the starting lineup on Wednesday. That came after he exited Tuesday night's game against the Orioles due to discomfort in his right oblique area. Manager Aaron Boone's update before Wednesday's game was a lot less jovial. New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm, Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images He confirmed that Chisholm is experiencing soreness and will undergo an MRI on Thursday in New York to determine the severity of the injury. Ominously, he added it will also determine if a stint on the injured list is necessary. Advertisement Chisholm sustained the injury during his first at-bat, grimacing after fouling off a pitch. Despite the discomfort, he hit a double down the right-field line and advanced to third base on an error. However, after sliding into third, he was replaced by pinch-runner Oswald Peraza . Postgame, Chisholm downplayed concerns about the injury. "I'm really not as concerned as everybody else. I feel pretty good. I've torn my oblique before, so I know it's not torn or anything. I can cough without any pain. It was just to be cautious, not to try to overdo it. I'd rather take two to three days off than six weeks." Boone, however, expressed caution, noting that while Chisholm seems to be doing well, there's definitely something going on with the oblique. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming MRI in determining the next steps. Advertisement The Yankees have to hope that Chisholm is right about his body. An oblique strain is rarely a short-term injury. Generally, any issue with it will linger with a hitter until they are shut down from swinging for a sustained period.
