Gold treasure with link to Ark of the Covenant stuns scientists: ‘Everyone marveled at the special find'

In a shocking archaeological discovery, an ancient gold ring has been unearthed at the City of David — the ancient heart of Jerusalem. The small gold ring, adorned with a red gemstone, is believed to date back roughly 2,300 years. The finding was made at the Givati Parking Lot during excavations led by the Israel Antiquities Authority and Tel Aviv University, funded by the Elad Association, within the Jerusalem Walls National Park. Advertisement 3 A small, gold ring, adorned with a red gemstone, was recently unearthed at the Givati Parking Lot during excavations. Facebook/Israel Antiquities Authority It was found steps away from the Temple of Jerusalem, the last place the Ark of the Covenant, which held the Ten Commandments, is believed to have been located. A researcher, who was sifting soil in the area, pulled the gold ring — the second found in the area in less than a year — out of the dirt. Advertisement 'At first, he was sure it must be a modern item dropped by one of our excavators, but when I examined the ring, I immediately assessed it as something ancient. We called over the archaeologists, everyone gathered around us and marveled at the special find; It was very exciting,' Rivka Lengler, a member of the excavation team, recounted in a statement. The jewelry likely belonged to a young girl from the Second Temple period, which includes the Early Hellenistic period. 3 The piece is the second found in the area in less than a year. Facebook/Israel Antiquities Authority The expert quickly noticed the similarities between the newest find and the ring that was collected just a few months before. Advertisement The rings were uncovered in the foundation layer of a grand structure, which also yielded an array of other jewelry, including bronze earrings, a gold earring with an animal motif, and a decorated gold bead. 'This is the first time that we have found in Jerusalem such a large assemblage of gold jewelry from that period,' said excavation manager Efrat Bocher. 3 The discovery was made within the Jerusalem Walls National Park. Facebook/Israel Antiquities Authority 'This displayed wealth is very rare in any archaeological layer, and it attests to the wealth of Jerusalem and the high standard of living of the city's residents during this period.' Advertisement Archaeologists believe the jewelry was part of a tradition marking the transition from childhood to adulthood, where young women who were engaged to be married buried childhood items — like jewelry — to signify a life change. Eli Escusido, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority, added, 'The discovery of these rings is a testament to Jerusalem's historical wealth and significance. This is 'Jerusalem of Gold' in its truest, most tangible form — an enduring legacy uncovered beneath our very feet.' Researchers hope the dig helps to better understand the connection between the neighborhood and the temple, 'but at this stage, we have no clear way of understanding the nature of that relationship,' Prof. Yuval Gadot from Tel Aviv University, the excavation director, told the Times of Israel. 'In order to understand more about Jerusalem's identity in the Hellenistic period, we are going to need more discoveries and research.' Earlier this year, a religious shrine sealed up by the ancestors of Jesus — and preserved for nearly 3,000 years — was discovered at the City of David.

Meet the Kentucky Derby horses running in the 2025 race

The Kentucky Derby will start the 2025 competition for horse racing's Triple Crown on Saturday with a field of 20 horses set to race in the annual Run for the Roses. Journalism, who won three straight graded-stakes races, was picked as the morning-line favorite by Mike Battaglia, the oddsmaker at the home of the Derby, Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. 2025 Kentucky Derby horses and odds Battaglia gave Journalism 3-1 odds after last Saturday's post-position draw. The odds will change leading up to Saturday's approximate post time of 6:57 p.m. EDT as bettors place their wagers. Here's a list of the Derby horses in order by their number with their morning-line odds: 1. Citizen Bull, 20-1 2. Neoequos, 30-1 3. Final Gambit, 30-1 5. American Promise, 30-1 6. Admire Daytona, 30-1 7. Luxor Café, 15-1 8. Journalism, 3-1 9. Burnham Square, 12-1 10. Grande, 20-1 11. Flying Mohawk, 30-1 12. East Avenue, 20-1 13. Publisher, 20-1 14. Tiztastic, 20-1 15. Render Judgment, 30-1 16. Coal Battle, 30-1 17. Sandman, 6-1 18. Sovereignty, 5-1 19. Chunk of Gold, 30-1 20. Owen Almighty, 30-1 21. Baeza, 12-1 The Derby field has been capped at 20 horses since 1975. Most of the horses became eligible for the Derby by earning points in a series of races in the U.S. that started last September. Journalism worked his way up the leaderboard in California by winning the Los Alamitos Futurity Stakes in December, March's San Felipe Stakes and last month's Santa Anita Derby. Journalism's trainer, Michael McCarthy, lives in Southern California's Altadena community, which was devastated by massive wildfires that tore through the area earlier this year. "It's been a few months now, people are still healing, people are still without a place to live, so maybe for a couple hours on Saturday, we can provide them a little bit of entertainment," McCarthy told CBS News' Jim Axelrod. Journalism runs on the track during morning training in preparation for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on April 25, 2025, in Louisville, and Sandman could pose the closest challenge to Journalism with 5-1 and 6-1 morning-line odds, respectively. Sovereignty comes to Louisville after finishing second in March's Florida Derby and winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes earlier in the month, as well as the Street Sense Stakes in October. Sandman won the Arkansas Derby in March after coming in third in February's Rebel Stakes and second in the Southwest Stakes in January. It will be a tall order for this year's Derby to have a closer ending than last year's photo finish. Mystik Dan won by a nose in 2024 over Sierra Leone and Forever Young in the closest three-horse finish at the Derby since 1947, according to Churchill Downs. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. was aboard Mystik Dan for the dramatic Derby ending, a day after riding Thorpedo Anna to victory in the all-filly Kentucky Oaks — the first time one jockey won both of the weekend's two big races since 2009. In this year's Derby, Hernandez will be riding Burnham Square, the bay gelding who won last month's Blue Grass Stakes in Kentucky and Florida's Holy Bull Stakes in February and was given 12-1 odds in the morning line. Burnham Square trains on the track during morning workouts prior to the running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1, 2025, in Louisville, same odds were given to Rodriguez, the winner of last month's Wood Memorial Stakes in New York who initially drew the No. 4 post for the Derby. But the dark bay colt was scratched on Thursday over what co-owner Tom Ryan said in a statement was a "small but slightly sensitive foot bruise that will need a few more days." The scratch made room for the Derby's only other eligible horse, Baeza, to enter the field. The bay colt, who got 12-1 odds in the morning line, came in second behind Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby. Rodriguez, who Ryan said will now be targeted for the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore later this month, is trained by Bob Baffert, who still has a horse set to enter the starting gate Saturday. Baffert is returning to the Derby after a three-year suspension from Churchill Downs following the now-deceased Medina Spirit's failed post-Derby drug test in 2021 and subsequent disqualification. Baffert's other horse in this year's Derby, Citizen Bull, is among the five colts given 20-1 odds in the morning line. In California, Citizen Bull won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes in February, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November and the American Pharoah Stakes in October, and came in fourth in the Santa Anita Derby won by Journalism. The other four colts given 20-1 morning-line odds are East Avenue, Grande, Publisher and Tiztastic. But the odds aren't a crystal ball. The last time a morning-line favorite took first place at the Derby was in 2018, when Justify won the Triple Crown. Last year, Mystik Dan got 20-1 odds in the morning line — which improved to 18-1 by post time — before winning the Derby. The bay colt launched from the No. 3 post, which Final Gambit drew for Saturday's Derby with 30-1 odds in the morning line. The winner of Kentucky's Jeff Ruby Steaks in March, Final Gambit, is among nine horses given the same long-shot odds, which also include Admire Daytona, American Promise, Chunk of Gold, Coal Battle, Flying Mohawk, Neoequos, Owen Almighty and Render Judgment. Luxor Café, with 15-1 morning-line odds, and Admire Daytona are the two colts who qualified for the Derby outside of the U.S. Luxor Café won Japan's Fukuryu Stakes in March and the Hyacinth Stakes in February. Admire Daytona came in fourth in the Hyacinth Stakes and won the UAE Derby in the United Arab Emirates last month.

Kevin Durant getting choked up about the basketball changing his life is what sports are all about

These days most people probably only see Kevin Durant as a cranky curmudgeon who loves to fire back at trolls online. That's not shade — it's true. Most of Durant's interactions online with fans are simply him telling people how silly they are to hold the beliefs that they do about the sport that they claim to love (but secretly seem to hate). To be fair to Durant, he's never usually wrong about the fans or their opinions. We've always seen the edgy side of Durant. The side perpetually prepared to clap back at an online instigator at a moment's notice. But there's also another side to Durant, too. A side that's a bit softer and more introspective. One that appreciates basketball and all that it's brought — not only in his life but to this world. We caught a glimpse of that side of Durant in the Court of Gold Netflix documentary about the 2024 USA Basketball team. Durant was visibly emotional while talking about playing on the Olympic stage in Paris over the summer. He opened up about what that all meant to him. Kevin Durant tearing up about playing on the Olympic stage is a moment to of Gold premieres in 12 hours. — Netflix (@netflix) February 17, 2025 "I come from a neighborhood where people don't even talk to each other," Durant explained. "So much hate in the world, too. When people get to start laughing and joking for a game of ball, it's cool to me. So, like, it gets me emotional, dog. It's crazy to see people travel so long to come see their favorite player play in the Olympics. They spend their money. They bring their whole family. It's just dope to me." Durant got to the crux of why this moment made him so emotional. This is the line that got to me: "The game has saved my life, so," he said. "It brought me and my family out of a lot of bull[expletive] so I'm just grateful for it. For real." The man in that clip is someone who has seen a lot where he's come from. He's lived through a lot. He's survived a lot. He's acutely aware of his journey and knows exactly when and where things could've gone wrong. Yet, he's where he is. This game that has brought so many people joy and changed so many lives is what delivered him there. At a time when there's so much dark in this world, Durant found a little light in the thing that changed his life. That appreciation is beautiful. It's inspiring. Basketball won't make all of us millionaires in the same way it did with Durant, obviously. We'll never be that good. Very few ever will. But maybe — even as simple fans of the game — it can bring us that same joy and gratitude he's feeling here. Kevin Durant breaks down in tears when talking about his love for basketball and Olympic competition

Kevin Durant loves ball. So much so that it brought him to tears when talking about his love for Olympic competition. The Phoenix Suns star sat down for an interview for the Netflix and Olympic Channel documentary "Court of Gold" about the basketball competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Durant played in those Olympics and helped lead Team USA to the gold medal. Netflix released a teaser video of the documentary on Monday ahead of the premier featuring an emotional Durant. Durant had to pause to wipe away tears when talking about what it meant for him to play in the Olympics and to see the support for the game and its players from the international community. "There's so much hate in the world, too. When people get to start laughing and joking for the game of ball, it's cool to me. "So, like it gets me emotional, dog." Durant then wiped his tears away and apologized before continuing. "It's crazy to see people travel so long to come see their favorite player play in the Olympics," he continued. "They spend their money, they bring their whole family. It's just dope to me." Durant then spoke about how the game of basketball has changed his and his family's lives. "The game has saved my life," Durant continued. "It brought me and my family out of a lot of bulls***. I'm just grateful for it. For real." The first of the six-part documentary debuted on Netflix early Tuesday and didn't include Durant's emotional interview. It did feature a previous clip that went viral when Durant posed a question to the host France team that touted its chemistry ahead of the Olympic Games. Relive the historic 2024 Paris Olympics Men's Basketball tournament through the eyes of the OF GOLD — following Team USA, France, Serbia, and Canada — comes to Netflix February 18. — Netflix (@netflix) January 23, 2025 "That chemistry gonna help you when you gotta guard Steph?" Durant asked. Spoiler alert: It didn't. As for the emotional clip that Netflix teased Monday, it's not clear how much detail he went into about his background and relationship with basketball. But it is clear just how much the game means to him, especially on the Olympic level. Durant has built a certain Hall of Fame career as a generational talent who's worked to become one of the games' all-time great scorers. Part of that résumé includes arguably the greatest career in USA Basketball history. Durant wasn't invited to participate in the 2008 Olympics following his rookie season in the NBA. He's been invited ever since and has not turned down an invitation en route to four Olympic gold medals as the only man to claim that tally in basketball. He was named MVP at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and has twice been named the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. In Paris, he became USA's all-time Olympic scorer among men and women.
