assisted 2,222 specially-abled passengers over the past year, signalling a growing acceptance and use of its uniquely-designed accessibility features, as per MahaMetro data.
What sets Nagpur Metro apart is its comprehensive infrastructure tailored for special passengers. All stations are equipped with wheelchair ramps, elevators, tactile pathways for the visually impaired, and dedicated boarding assistance. Each train includes reserved spaces for wheelchair users. In addition, an emergency notification system in audio-visual format enhances safety for all, especially those with hearing or vision impairments.
Trained personnel are posted across all stations to assist passengers with disabilities, elderly travellers, and those with mobility challenges. "The 2,222 passengers served are not just numbers; they represent a shift in how urban mobility is being perceived by marginalised communities," a senior MahaMetro official said and added, "The rising figures suggest that accessibility is no longer a secondary concern; it's a deciding factor in public transport usage.
The initiative also reflects compliance with rights of persons with disabilities Act, 2016, and aligns with India's broader push for inclusive development. By embedding accessibility into its core design, Nagpur Metro challenges the traditional notion of public transit as utilitarian — instead making it equitable.
As other cities look to upgrade or build their own metro systems, Nagpur's model offers a compelling blueprint, including technology, efficiency, and empathy working in sync.
