Hallow Road review — Rosamund Pike is extraordinary in this thriller
Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys deliver a concentrated burst of parental trauma in this propulsive psychological thriller that's set almost entirely inside a Land Rover late at night. It's like Tom Hardy's Locke but more intense.
It begins outside the car with an ominous tracking shot around a deserted family dinner table in the dark. A glass has been smashed, the food abandoned. It feels like a crime scene. It soon transpires, courtesy of a layered screenplay from the debut feature writer William Gillies, that this is indeed a crime scene, but one where the felonies committed live in deep-seated family fractures between the father, Frank (Rhys), the mother and paramedic nurse, Maddie (Pike), and their 18-year-old daughter, Alice (Megan McDonnell).
