Red Sox consider fast-tracking Masataka Yoshida's return from IL to help fill void at DH

'We've seen it the last few years: When he's healthy, it's a great at-bat, he hits the ball hard, he takes his walks,' Cora said Tuesday. 'I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I have a plan on how to use him. We can platoon, we can do all this stuff. Ref and Masa together — that's a pretty good hitter.' In that scenario, the lefthanded-hitting Yoshida would receive a majority of the playing time, facing righthanders, against whom he had a .310/.374/.458 slash line last year. Advertisement That would leave games against lefthanders for the righty-swinging Refsnyder, who owns a .314/.422/.569 slash line against southpaws this year. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'We're going to be OK,' Cora said. Yoshida had surgery to repair his right shoulder in October. Although he has ramped up as a hitter with little issue, his apparent problems throwing — he is playing catch from up to 120 feet now — have delayed his return. And with a full outfield (and a previously full DH spot), the Red Sox had been in no hurry to bring him back. In their post-Devers world, that is changing. Yoshida hasn't faced live pitching since spring training, so he would need to go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment before being activated from the injured list. Advertisement 'Let's see if we can speed up the process,' Cora said, noting that Red Sox decision-makers intended to form a more concrete plan late Tuesday or early Wednesday. 'He can swing that bat, now it's a matter of him getting at-bats and all that, but at the same time respecting the rehab of the shoulder. We'll decide that sooner rather than later and go from there.' . . . Beginning a short rehab assignment with Triple A Worcester on Tuesday, right fielder Wilyer Abreu declared himself 100 percent recovered from the left oblique strain that precipitated the call-up of rookie Roman Anthony. His plan is to play with Worcester again Wednesday, travel to San Francisco on Thursday and return from the injured list Friday, the first game he is eligible to be active. 'I knew it was going to be only 10 days,' Abreu said, noting that he felt fine after three or four days. 'I was ready before that, so I know it's going to be good for me to reset my mind, reset everything, take a rest for a little bit. It wasn't a big deal. It was just tightness.' Abreu struggled over the month or so before getting hurt, posting a .180/.202/.326 slash line. The version of the Red Sox that Abreu will rejoin is different from the one he left. The outfield is crowded, with Anthony figuring prominently into the playing-time picture, but Devers, the DH, is gone. 'I'm just going to do my part and whenever they need me, I'm going to be there: DH, outfield, whatever,' Abreu said. 'So I'm looking forward to it.' Advertisement Cora said Abreu 'is going to play a lot of defense,' which would leave Anthony without a permanent defensive home. But the manager is comfortable bouncing the top prospect around all three outfield spots, which Anthony also did in the minors. 'The lineup here is not to develop guys. It's to win games,' Cora said. 'We'll maximize the roster. We'll use it to our advantage … We'll use the DH to our advantage. Sometimes Jarren [Duran] will need some days off his feet. Roman can play center. We'll maximize the roster. We'll do that.' . . . Cora on Devers saying at his introductory news conference that he will play wherever the Giants want, including first base: 'He's with the Giants now. We have to turn the page, and I'm turning the page now.' Cora said he did not watch the news conference … A report from Yahoo said Devers was unhappy that rookie Kristian Campbell volunteered to play first base. Cora said that was the first he had heard of any tension over that issue. 'Kristian Campbell didn't ask to play first base,' Cora said. 'I talked to him about it and he was willing to try it' … Tanner Houck (right flexor pronator strain) will pitch two or three innings for Worcester on Wednesday, the start of his rehab assignment. Starting for Buffalo (Blue Jays) will be his fellow St. Louis-area native and University of Missouri product, Max Scherzer (right thumb inflammation). Red Sox exec says he believes team could win 'more games' without Rafael Devers

The Boston Red Sox appeared to turn their season around by sweeping the New York Yankees over the weekend - and then they traded away their franchise player. Shortly after the Sox completed the three-game beatdown of the Bombers, they sent Rafael Devers, who homered on Sunday over the Green Monster, to the San Francisco Giants. The writing had been on the wall for some time after the Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman, and eventually, Devers refused to play first base. Devers has only been a designated hitter all season. "In the end, I think it's pretty clear that we couldn't find alignment with Raffy," Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy told reporters on Monday, via "We all worked at it over the last several months, going back to the offseason, starting with [manager] Alex Cora and [chief baseball officer] Craig [Brewslow] and the staff, and then up to me, and all the way up to [owner] John Henry. "We worked at it. We had a different vision for him going forward than he had, and we couldn't get there. We couldn't find alignment, and we reached that inflection point and made the decision to make a big move." Despite losing, by far, their best bat, Breslow, a pitcher for 13 MLB seasons, said that the move is "in no way signifying a waving of the white flag on 2025." In fact, Breslow actually believes that the trade will result in a better product in the immediate future. "I do think there's a real chance that at the end of the season," Breslow said, "we're looking back, and we've won more games than we otherwise would have." For what it is worth, the Sox beat the Seattle Mariners, 2-0, on Monday night in their first game of the post-Devers era. Devers was the last man standing of the 2018 World Series champion Sox still in Boston - but now, all $250 million remaining on his deal is now San Francisco's responsibility. Breslow insisted the deal was not an attempt to cut payroll — like the deals for Mookie Betts, who went on to win two World Series in Los Angeles, or Chris Sale, who won the NL Cy Young Award in his first season with the Braves. However, with lots of cash now available - and a team that is right in the postseason race, Breslow said the front office will continue to look for ways to improve the team, with a middle-of-the-lineup hitter a new need. "For some reason, this team (is) an example where the whole was not greater than the sum of the parts," he said. "And being great teammates and sacrificing and stepping up for each other and embodying this shared vision, we believe that those are principles that we need to be faithful to. "And so, at the end of the season, I think we could look back and say we've won more games than we otherwise would have, because of the way that this roster is now able to come together." Red Sox internal ‘dysfunction' exposed after Rafael Devers trade — including absurd Zoom call moment

The mute button sure would have done wonders. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow fired former scouting supervisor Carl Moesche earlier this year after the latter said, 'Thanks, Bres, you f–king stuff,' following a Zoom meeting, according to Yahoo. Advertisement The scene highlighted what the article pointed to as an example of the 'dysfunction' that played a role in the organization's controversial decision to trade superstar Rafael Devers to the Giants. 'An absolute s–tshow,' one team staffer told Yahoo when describing the sweep of the Yankees this past weekend, then making a franchise-altering trade of a beloved superstar. It will take years to determine a winner in this blockbuster trade that came out of nowhere, but the Yahoo piece painted the picture of a front office that is not functioning on all cylinders. 3 Craig Breslow moved Rafael Devers to the Giants. Getty Images Advertisement Breslow, who joined the organization before the 2024 season to replace Chaim Bloom, 'has grown increasingly insulated,' according to the report. Longtime staffers who played a role in previous regimes that won championships in 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018 reportedly 'feel shut out of the operation.' 'The collaborative spirit that once defined Red Sox baseball operations has frayed,' Yahoo contributor Joon Lee wrote. Advertisement Boston reportedly hired Sportsology, a sports consulting firm, last May for an audit of the organization with the purpose of helping align baseball operations. 3 Carl Moesche was fired by the Red Sox. Team USA It led to several individuals being fired and the 'marginalization' of several respected voices. Advertisement Moesche, whose LinkedIn profile says he joined the franchise in December 2017, reportedly made his comment earlier this year after believing a Zoom meeting had ended, two team sources told Yahoo. 3 Rafael Devers homered against the Yankees in likely his last game with the Red sox. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Breslow has reportedly also clashed with manager Alex Cora, with Cora emphasizing winning now while Breslow is looking more toward the future. With Boston having made the playoffs once since 2018, Cora is trying to return to October. That can leak into how he manages games and divvies up playing time, which can go against the preferences Bloom and the front office have regarding what they believe should be prioritized. 'The coaching staff has grown frustrated with the state of player development, specifically how much emphasis is placed on swing mechanics and hitting data, often at the expense of fundamentals,' Lee wrote. The Red Sox (38-36) began the post-Devers era with a second straight 2-0 win, this time at Seattle. They are now in sole possession of the third Wild Card spot and just 5 1/2 games back of the reeling Yankees in the AL East.
