Chiefs eye future beyond Travis Kelce with potential trade for Raiders' Michael Mayer

The Kansas City Chiefs have built a modern-day NFL dynasty, fueled by the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes and the consistency of tight end . But with Kelce set to turn 36 in October and his contract expiring after the 2025 season, the franchise faces a pivotal transition. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now His production has dipped, his speed has waned, and while he remains a trusted weapon, the signs of wear are becoming harder to ignore. Michael Mayer emerges as prime trade target to reinforce Chiefs' post-Kelce era Behind Kelce, the tight end room lacks long-term spark. Noah Gray is reliable, but not dynamic. The front office must act strategically, this isn't just about filling a spot, it's about shaping the future of Mahomes' offense. Michael Mayer, currently with the Las Vegas Raiders, emerges as a compelling solution. The 2023 second-round pick is a powerful, sure-handed tight end who thrives in contested catches and blocking situations. Despite a quiet rookie season, his ceiling remains high. With the Raiders ushering in Brock Bowers as their new offensive centerpiece, Mayer's role has been pushed to the background. The timing couldn't be better for Kansas City to make a move. Raiders PLAN TO TRADE Michael Mayer + Huge NFL Update Reports suggest that Las Vegas fielded trade calls for Mayer earlier in the offseason, showing they're at least open to discussions. While trading within the AFC West adds a layer of complication, the potential upside for both teams is undeniable. The Raiders can maximize Mayer's value, and the Chiefs secure a succession plan with star potential. A strategic step toward sustained dominance for Kansas City Under Andy Reid's guidance and Mahomes' leadership, Mayer could evolve into a high-impact player. He brings the physical traits and football IQ to fit seamlessly into Kansas City's system. With Kelce nearing the end of his illustrious run, Mayer offers continuity—an opportunity to evolve the tight end position without skipping a beat. Report: Chiefs give Travis Kelce March 14 deadline to decide playing future

Travis Kelce's playing future is one of the NFL's top offseason storylines, at least for the next month. The Kansas City Chiefs have given the future Hall of Fame tight end until March 14 to decide whether or not he'll play next season, The Athletic reports. Kelce, who will turn 36 this year, has one season remaining on his contract. But he's due a $12.5 million roster bonus on March 15, according to Spotrac. The Chiefs are currently projected with $5.38 million in salary cap space for 2025, ranking 23rd among 32 NFL teams. So the team will need to make some moves to free up more room before NFL free agency begins on March 10. The 12-year pro had a productive season for Kansas City with 97 receptions. However, his 823 receiving yards, 8.5 yards per catch and three touchdowns were the lowest totals of his career. In the Chiefs' 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, Kelce had four receptions (on six targets) for 39 yards. Kansas City signing tight end Noah Gray to a three-year, $18 million extension before last season appeared to indicate that the team was planning for a post-Kelce future. On his "New Heights" podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, Travis said he would take some time before making a decision on next season. 'I know everybody wants to know whether or not I'm playing next year and right now I'm just kicking everything down the road. I'm kicking every can I can down the road,' Kelce said. 'I am not making any crazy decisions, but right now the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches understanding that there's a lot that goes into this thing." Now that the season is over, Travis is taking some time to think about his future — New Heights (@newheightshow) February 12, 2025 He went on to explain the toll that playing extra games in the playoffs, including three consecutive Super Bowls, has exacted on his body over the years. A long physical and mental recovery comes with that, which has him thinking about retirement. 'The fact that we keep going to these AFC championships and Super Bowls, that means I'm playing an extra three games more than everybody else in the entire league," Kelce said. "That's a lot of wear and tear on your body. It's a lot of time spent in the building. That process can be grueling. It can weigh on you. It can make you better and it can drive you crazy at the same time." However, now it appears that the Chiefs would like Kelce to take one month to contemplate his 2025 plans.

NFL fans turned Frankie Luvu trying to stop the Eagles' Tush Push into a hilarious meme

When the Eagles line up within two yards of the goal line, the entire stadium knows what play is coming ... the Tush Push (or Brotherly Shove). It's a play that was virtually unstoppable in Jason Kelce's days as Eagles center, but has remained awfully effective in the post-Kelce era. So, with the Commanders facing an obvious Tush Push situation, they got creative in an attempt to stop it. Hoping to time up the snap, Frankie Luvu tried to jump over the line with no consideration to the encroachment penalty that would follow. After all, it's just half the distance to the goal. But with the officials catching on to the antics, they actually resorted to warning the Commanders that they could just award the Eagles a touchdown if the penalties continued. I mean, look at this: We think he might have jumped early 😂 — FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) January 26, 2025 Luvu went flying there ... way before the snap. The effort made for some epic entertainment value even if it was all for naught -- the Eagles scored after three encroachment penalties. At the very least, though, we got a great meme out of the moment.
