Canada Post says strike contributed $208M to the company's $1.3B loss last year

Article content The company also said it has been impacted by the decline in letter mail, which has been steadily trending downward for 20 years. In 2006, Canada Post delivered 5.5 billion letters. Last year, it delivered two billion. The delivery costs are rising as the amount of new addresses increases, making it 'unsustainable' to continue delivering fewer letters to more addresses. The corporation said its focus will shift to parcel delivery, as e-commerce continues to grow. Article content However, this pivot is in direct conflict with the collective agreements it has with CUPW, which 'contain pages and pages of requirements and restrictions that were added decades ago' when Canada Post was 'focused on delivering a large and steady stream of mail,' it said. Article content Article content The union's national president Jan Simpson responded to the annual report in a news release later on Wednesday. She said that the Canada Post's report left out 'many important details that don't support its own message.' Article content She said the report doesn't address its 'failure to raise stamp rates before 2025, even though every other major postal operator raised rates significantly between 2018-2023.' It also doesn't include how much of the losses since 2018 resulted from costs related to the COVID pandemic, she said. Article content The union maintains that the 'best way to right the Corporation's finances is by negotiating ratifiable collective agreements that will help grow parcel volumes, expand services and secure Canada Post's position as the important public service provider that it is.' Article content 'There are almost no changes from what the Employer put forward on May 21,' when the corporation presented offers after receiving strike notice, the union said. Article content The union called out the corporation for refusing to budge on contentious issues, such as part-time staffing and weekend delivery, as well as load-levelling (spreading out the processing and delivery of mail) and dynamic routing (optimizing delivery routes). Article content 'These have been the most challenging issues on the table this round, and now, Canada Post insists that they must be in the next collective agreements,' per the union. Article content The latest offers did not provide improvements on the current wage proposal — a cumulative increase of nearly 14 per cent over four years — or include changes to the short-term disability program 'that would have helped both parties,' the union said. Canada Post to stay operational; union calls for ban on overtime work

May 23 (Reuters) - Canada Post said on Friday that operations will continue, but customers may face delays due to a union-imposed ban limiting workers to eight-hour shifts. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) announced an immediate nationwide overtime ban, directing members to refuse work beyond 40 hours per week, it said in a separate release. "At this time, there are no rotating strikes or national work stoppage," Canada Post said. The development comes after Canada Post met with the union Thursday evening to continue contract negotiation talks. However, a spokesperson for Canada Post said the meeting lasted less than 30 minutes and "was unfortunately not enough to demonstrate meaningful progress." Canada Post had previously received notices from the union indicating that it would begin strike activity from Friday. In case of a nationwide strike, the postal company had said it would not accept any new items until the disruption was over, and mail and parcels would not be delivered.

Posties upset about not delivering to hospitals

Photo: Otago Daily Times / Gerard O'Brien If you're thinking about sending a get well soon card to a loved one in hospital - you might need to think again about how you do it. The Postal Workers' Union says posties have been instructed by NZ Post that letters and cards addressed to the street address of hospitals must be returned to the sender. It's part of a new return to sender policy applying to businesses and institutions. Kathryn speaks with Postal Workers Union Co-National President, John Maynard. NZ Post says most big businesses, government agencies, shops etc have both a physical address and a postal address - usually a PO box where their mail gets sent. It says mail is still being delivered, so long as it is correctly addressed.

Canada Post should end daily mail delivery to residences but keep it for businesses: report

OTTAWA — The Industrial Inquiry Commission report on the labour dispute at Canada Post recommends phasing out daily door-to-door letter mail delivery for individual addresses, while daily delivery to businesses should be maintained. Article content Article content It also says the moratoriums on rural post office closures and community mailbox conversions should be lifted. Article content 'My recommendations are based on my conclusion that there is a way to preserve Canada Post as a vital national institution,' commissioner William Kaplan wrote in the 162-page report released Friday. Article content Article content 'I have designed them to respond to the present problem: to arrest and then reverse the growing financial losses by putting into place the necessary structural changes both within and outside the collective agreements.' Article content Article content The report was called for after Ottawa asked the federal labour board to send postal employees back to work last year to end a strike that was disrupting holiday mail deliveries. Article content The report examined the state of Canada Post and its finances, in relation to reaching a labour deal. 'Without thoughtful, measured, staged, but immediate changes, its fiscal situation will continue to deteriorate,' he wrote. Article content Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger said in a statement Friday that Kaplan's report offers the Crown corporation, its employees and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers 'a frank and straightforward assessment' of the challenges facing the postal service. Article content He welcomed the report's recommendations and said they come at a 'critical time' as Canada looks to strengthen its economy to guard against U.S. threats. Article content Article content Kaplan said that until recently, Canada Post was able to operate in a financially sustainable manner as low-cost urban and suburban mail delivery subsidized high-cost delivery to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Article content Article content 'This model no longer works because the traditional core business — mail delivery — has fundamentally changed: fewer letters must now be delivered to more addresses,' he wrote. Article content Kaplan said that both sides were 'diametrically opposed,' leading to stalemates at the bargaining table, but he put the onus for failing to reach a deal on one side in particular. Article content Patty Hajdu, the newly sworn-in minister of jobs and families, said in a statement posted to social media Friday afternoon that the report 'offers thoughtful suggestions on how to continue good-faith negotiations.'
