US beats Finland 5-2 to reach semifinals at ice hockey worlds

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Conor Garland's two power-play goals helped the United States beat Finland 5-2 to reach the semifinals of the ice hockey world championship on Thursday. Trailing 2-1 in the middle period, the Americans needed 71 seconds to turn things around when defenseman Zeev Buium put home a rebound at 23:53 before Garland's second goal restored the U.S. lead. Garland had given the U.S. a 1-0 lead 4:50 into the game when he received a cross-ice pass from Logan Cooley to beat goalie Juuse Saros from the right circle. Finland tied it at 1-1 on Eeli Tolvanen's power-play goal. Patrik Puistola scored from the slot on another power play 7:46 into the second period for Finland to take a 2-1 lead. The Americans added two more goals in the third. Shane Pinto added the fourth 5:52 into the final period and captain Clayton Keller finished the scoring into an empty net. The U.S. team hasn't won a medal since taking bronze in 2021. The Finns have been waiting for a medal since they won gold in 2022. In Herning, Denmark, last year's runner-up Switzerland marched to the semifinals by blanking Austria 6-0. Later, Canada plays Denmark in Herning and Sweden faces titleholder Czech Republic in Stockholm. ___ AP sports:

Dallas Stars not getting shut out on power play in this West final against Oilers

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars aren't getting shut out on the power play in the Western Conference final against Edmonton this time. They took full advantage of their opportunities in the third period of Game 1 in this series, with three power-play goals in a game-turning 5:26 span on way to a 6-3 victory Wednesday night, a year after going 0 for 14 in six playoff games against the Oilers.

Dallas Stars not getting shut out on power play in this West final against Oilers

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars aren't getting shut out on the power play in the Western Conference final against Edmonton this time. They took full advantage of their opportunities in the third period of Game 1 in this series, with three power-play goals in a game-turning 5:26 span on way to a 6-3 victory Wednesday night, a year after going 0 for 14 in six playoff games against the Oilers. 'It's great that we got some goals there and hopefully we can keep doing that,' said Miro Heiskanen, whose got the first of the trio only 32 seconds into the final period. 'Happy for our power play. It took a lot of heat last year at this point of the year,' coach Pete DeBoer said. 'It was the difference tonight for us, so it's great.″ Mikael Granlund tied it at 3 with his power-play goal and Matt Duchene then put the Stars ahead to stay. That trio of power-play goals made the Stars the first team in Stanley Cup playoff history to earn multiple wins in regulation of the same postseason after being down two goals in the third period. In Game 7 of the first round against Colorado, Dallas overcame a 2-0 deficit in the third period on way to a 4-2 series-clinching win. Dallas is only the second team since 1934, when power-play goals were first officially tracked, to have three of them in the opening six minutes of a playoff period. The other was the New York Rangers, with three in the first 4:36 of the third period on way to a 7-2 win over Montreal in Game 1 of the 2014 Eastern Conference final. While the Stars had that lingering goose egg from last year's West final, then failed to convert on a power play 7 1/2 minutes into this series opener against Edmonton, they have been good on special teams throughout this postseason. They entered this series ranked third among playoff teams both for converting power plays (30.8%) and killing penalties (86.1%). Their power play was the best among any teams that played more than one round, and the teams better on PKs were Eastern Conference finalists Carolina and Florida. 'The first power play we had was a little bit like the rest of our game. our execution was a little off, we didn't make great plays with the puck, we didn't have great support,' DeBoer said. 'I thought in the third, we came out and we executed. I think you never know when that switch is going to go. 'Obviously, being at home here for this game, we get that first goal, the crowd gets into it, momentum shifts really quickly. That's the benefit of being at home here for Game 1.' ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Stars Struck: Edmonton Oilers penalty killing kills the wrong team

Article content It wasn't so much penalty killing as penalty dying. Article content Article content In a game the Edmonton Oilers were in total control of, up 3-1 heading into the third period and firing on all cylinders, their biggest weakness in these playoffs reared its ugly head once again. Article content It absolutely collapsed when they needed it most, bringing the team down with it. Article content In a stunning turn of events Wednesday in Dallas, the Stars scored three power-play goals on three separate penalties in the first six minutes of the final frame to turn what looked like a humbling Game 1 loss into a brutal 6-3 victory. Article content It was hard to watch. An Oilers team that prides itself on post-season composure melted into a blue and orange puddle. Article content Miro Heiskanen scored on the power play 32 seconds into the third period to make it 3-2, Michael Granlund tied it 3-3 on another power play three minutes later and Matt Duchene made it 4-3 two minutes after that on the hat trick of man-advantage markers. Article content Another one from Seguin at even strength and an empty-netter sealed the heartbreak and the Stars are up 1-0 in the Western Conference Final. Article content It shouldn't have ended this way, not after the way it started. Article content Edmonton showed right from the opening puck drop that their six-day layoff hadn't slowed their momentum one bit. Article content Connor McDavid was flying. Leon Draisaitl was flying. The penalty kill had two great scoring chances on the first Stars power play. Stuart Skinner made a nice glove save. The power play scored 25 seconds into its first opportunity. Zach Hyman had 10 hits in the first two periods. Article content Article content And in what was supposed to be a battle between two power teams in the West, the Stars spent most of the night on their heels. Article content Edmonton's star players were in big-game mode and Dallas struggled to keep up. Article content Leon Draisaitl scored. Article content Ryan Nugent Hopkins scored. Article content Evan Bouchard scored. Article content With Edmonton up 3-1 at the second intermission, the three of them had already combined for seven points. Article content And it could have been worse, with Hyman hitting the crossbar and Darnell Nurse ringing one off the post. Article content Playoff monster Mikko Rantanen, the guy with 19 points who, next to goaltender Jake Oettinger, was supposed to be Edmonton's biggest problem in this series? You didn't really notice him. Article content And Oettinger? It took less than two periods for the Oilers to make another star opposition goaltender look pretty average. Article content The only offence Dallas managed in the first 40 minutes was when Draisaitl turned the puck over just inside the Dallas blue line to send Tyler Seguin in on a breakaway. Beyond that, the Oilers were in charge. Article content It wasn't. Article content
