Trump shares rare moment of affection with Melania for being 'almost too good'
President Donald Trump and his wife Melania shared a rare moment of affection as he showered her with praise at a pre-Mother's Day celebration. The president gave the first lady European-style kisses on the cheeks at an event at the White House on Thursday afternoon honoring military mothers. 'I especially want to thank one of the best moms that I know, that I've ever seen. Sometimes she's almost too good,' he said of Melania. Trump commended her for how she raised their son, who is 19 years old and studying at New York University. 'She is so good with Barron, but he's grown up strong and nice, and he's a good boy. He's a good student,' he said. 'So I want to thank you. You've done a great job. Thank you – great first lady.' Trump also kissed Melania on the head as she sat on a chair at the front of the room. The first lady allowed her husband to hold her hand as they partook in the reception. He introduced her as 'that very special woman that I talked about, our great first lady, and she's loved by all'. Melania, wearing an oversized white blazer over a white shirt and black leather pencil skirt, paid tribute to military mums and reflected on the strength of motherhood. 'The life-changing event that makes women invincible and exposed at the same time,' she said. 'It's remarkable, really, that my son's life creates unimaginable, unpredictable concerns and thrills for me, even until this day.' She lauded military mums for developing a 'level of grace and resilience' synonymous with American life. 'I urge you to prioritize your well-being,' she continued. More Trending 'Nurture yourself, for your strength is the bedrock of a brighter future for our children.' Melania made an uncommon appearance alongside her husband just over a week after accompanying him to Pope Francis' funeral in the Vatican. As the couple walked toward Marine One for their departure from Washington, DC, the president showed another rare public display of affection toward his wife, putting his left arm around her waist. The Trumps on Thursday shared some tender moments a day after The New York Times reported that Melania has spent less than 14 of the 108 days her husband has served his second term, in the White House. Melania on the same day unveiled a new stamp honoring the late former first lady, Barbara Bush. Melania Trump in rare White House appearance says military moms face ‘extraordinary parallel journey'
Melania Trump is urging mothers to prioritize their well-being, calling the birth of a child a 'life-changing event that makes women invincible and exposed at the same time,' during a rare public appearance at the White House. 'It's remarkable, really, that my son's life creates unimaginable, unpredictable concerns and trials for me even until this day,' the first lady said Thursday at a Mother's Day reception aimed at recognizing military moms. Trump hosted similar Mother's Day events throughout her husband's first term in office. 'All caring mothers understand this rare feeling — nothing against fathers — but in my opinion, and I'm sure everyone in this room agrees, only a mother can grasp this particular point,' the 55-year-old former model quipped to the audience as President Trump looked on in the East Room. Military mothers, Melania Trump said, have 'developed an extraordinary parallel journey — they are filled with stories of personal sacrifice, determination, loss and healing.' 'I urge you to prioritize your well-being. Nurture yourself, for your strength is the bedrock of a brighter future for our children. By caring for ourselves, we empower the next generation to thrive together,' the mother of 19-year-old Barron Trump said. In remarks at the event — also attended by Vice President Vance and second lady Usha Vance — the president praised his wife, saying, 'I especially want to thank one of the best moms that I know, that I've ever seen. Sometimes she's almost too good.' 'She is so good with Barron. He's grown up strong and nice, and he's a good boy,' Trump said of his youngest son, a student at New York University. 'You've done a great job,' he told the first lady. The president spoke just moments before white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel, indicating that a new pope had been elected. Asked for his reaction to the news that a new pope had been chosen to replace the late Pope Francis, Trump responded with a grin, 'Seen the smoke, but I haven't seen the pope.' Melania Trump has kept a relatively low profile since the beginning of her husband's second term, making limited appearances in Washington. The 'Melania' author said in January ahead of Trump's inauguration that she would 'be in the White House' but would split her time in other cities where the couple has residences. 'And when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach. But my first priority is to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife,' she said at the time. At the pre-Mother's Day gathering, the president saluted the military moms 'on behalf of every single American,' saying they had 'made extraordinary sacrifices for family and country.' The commander in chief also lauded his own mom. 'I had a great mother,' he said of Mary Anne Trump, who died in 2000 at 88. 'She was such an angel,' he said to the crowd, filled with administration officials, lawmakers, and military families. 'Could be very tough, I will say. She had her tough moments, some difficult moments,' Trump continued. 'But overall, very, very good. I had a great one.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump, Melania share tender moment at White House Mother's Day event: ‘She's almost too good'
WASHINGTON — President Trump showed his wife Melania some love with a European-style exchange of kisses Thursday as he turned over the lectern to her at a White House pre-Mother's Day celebration of military moms. 'I especially want to thank one of the best moms that I know, that I've ever seen. Sometimes she's almost too good,' Trump gushed at the East Room gathering. 'She is so good with [son] Barron, but he's grown up strong and nice, and he's a good boy. He's a good student. So I want to thank you. You've done a great job. Thank you — great first lady.' REUTERS Trump added: 'It's my pleasure to introduce that very special woman that I talked about, our great first lady, and she's loved by all.' The president praised his spouse for her first-term role refreshing of the White House Rose Garden — which he intends to further alter later this month by adding pavers over its grassy lawn. Advertisement 'I just walked by the Rose Garden, and that is the most beautiful thing. We saw it yesterday,' he said. 3 Trump praised his wife's role raising their 19-year-old son Barron. AP 'You know, she took a lot of heat. She did it — it was so gorgeous, and they couldn't, these people couldn't do that if they tried. And those flowers were blooming … But you did some job. Thank you very much, honey. Come on up.' 3 The first lady is seldom seen around the White House. AP Advertisement In her own remarks, the first lady encouraged fellow mothers to 'prioritize your wellbeing [and] nurture yourself — for your strength is the bedrock of a brighter future for our children. 'By caring for ourselves, we empower the next generation to thrive,' she said. Melania Trump co-headlined the event one day after publication of a New York Times article which noted that she had spent fewer than 14 days at the White House out of the initial 108 of her husband's second term. The president and first lady frequently spend weekends at one of his properties, such as Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey, or — in Melania's case — Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan.
