‘Here we go again' – Punter wins truly life-changing sum from £2 Lucky 15 to leave ‘stunned' bookies reeling
ONE savvy punter is saying merci beaucoup to William Hill after landing a colossal £53k from a £2 Lucky 15 placed on Wednesday's action in Dieppe, France. The remarkable win was secured at a William Hill shop in Cramlington, just north of Newcastle, where the mystery customer placed the modest £30 total stake before the morning races. The bet got off to a flying start with Register (10/1) winning the opening race at 10.20am. That success was followed up by impressive victories for Folly Foot (14/1) at 10.51am and Golden Falls (12/1) at 11.23am. The win was completed when Astorius (7/1) triumphed in the 11.55am contest, sealing the punter's massive five-figure return. Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, said: 'It was only on Monday that we were reeling from a £23k racing payout, and we're here again after another punter pulled off an even more remarkable bet. "They've managed to turn £30 into over £50k after landing their £2 Lucky 15 on this morning's action from Dieppe, placed in our Cramlington shop, just north of Newcastle. "It's not every day that you head to your local William Hill shop, place an each-way Lucky 15, and walk away with £53,220.20, so we just have to salute this customer. "We'll be hoping there aren't any more of these big racing winners on the horizon, as we've had our fill of them this week!" 49ers make a switch at punter, signing Thomas Morstead and cutting Mitch Wishnowsky
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers made a switch at punter on Wednesday, signing veteran Thomas Morstead and cutting Mitch Wishnowsky after six seasons in the role. The switch at punter is one of several made this offseason by the 49ers to overhaul a special teams unit that struggled last season, leading to the firing of coordinator Brian Schneider. Brant Boyer was hired after spending the previous nine seasons in that role with the New York Jets and has now brought in a punter and a kicker he worked with in the past. San Francisco signed kicker Greg Joseph earlier this month to compete with Jake Moody. The 39-year-old Morstead spent the past two seasons playing for Boyer with Jets after spending most of his career with the New Orleans Saints. He averaged 47.2 yards per punt last season with a 40.7 yard net average. He has averaged 46.8 yards per punt with a 41.5 yard net average in 255 games. He was a second-team All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl in 2012 for New Orleans. Wishnowsky was a fourth-round pick by San Francisco in 2019 and was one of the better punters in the league at pinning opponents deep before a back injury sidelined him for the final eight games last season. He ranked third out of 38 punters with at least 150 attempts since 2019 with 45.2% of his punts getting downed inside the 20. He averaged 45.6 yards per punt with a 40.7 yard net average in 92 games. He averaged 45.2 yards per punt last season with his 36.3-yard net average ranking last among 34 punters with at least 20 attempts. San Francisco also signed linebacker Chazz Surratt to a one-year deal and waived linebacker DaShaun White to make room on the roster. Surratt was drafted in the third round in 2021 by Minnesota and spent the past three seasons with the Jets where he played for both Boyer and current Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Surratt had 18 tackles on defense and 10 more on special teams last season. ___ AP NFL:

Roughriders' Joe Couch happy to be back with team after being cut
Joe Couch can get back to tracking ball flights and not airline flights. Article content Article content After being released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders on May 14 during the second round of training camp cuts, the 30-year-old punter considered flying back home to Australia as he pondered his future. Article content He also considered sticking around Canada in hopes of getting back on a CFL roster. Article content The decision was made easier when Roughriders long snapper Jorgen Hus extended an invitation to Couch to stay at his Saskatoon home with his family of four as he waited for another opportunity. Article content Article content 'I was kind of just waiting to see what was happening across the league, and then, yeah, if I didn't get a call, I'd be on my way back to Australia,' said Couch, who spent the 2024 season on Saskatchewan's practice roster. 'I was honestly prepared to leave Wednesday when I got cut, but I was like, 'You know what? I'll stick around because I've worked hard and I think if, after a couple of weeks, maybe a team will bring me in.' Article content 'It's such a funny game, like anything can happen, so you've just got to stay ready and that's what I was doing.' Article content While Couch had his own bag of footballs he could practice with, Hus also put him to work. Article content 'He was cooking me up beautiful dinners so I was like, 'I want to help this guy out,' ' said Couch. 'He was planning on getting all these trees in before he left to Regina (for the third week of training camp). So we had some holes to dig and some evergreens to put in. Article content 'And babysit. He's got two girls, so you know, if one's being a bit of a hassle, I'll just jump in and be like 'Alright, let's watch TV, or let's put on some Paw Patrol or something.' ' Article content 'He was a great babysitter,' said Hus, father of a nearly two-year-old and an eight-week-old. 'It was good having him around. He was definitely a lot of help around the house and was good with the kids. Article content 'And yeah, we put him to work in the backyard, but we fed him well.' Article content And no, Couch didn't stay on the couch. Instead, he got the spare bedroom. Article content 'We didn't put Couch on the couch,' chuckled Hus. Article content Article content Following the retirement of Adam Korsak this off-season, Couch was in competition with fellow Aussie Bailey Flint for Saskatchewan's starting punting job this year. Article content However when Couch was released, Flint handled all the punting duties in Saskatchewan's first pre-season game against Winnipeg — averaging 40.6 yards per punt. Hoping to increase that statistic, the Roughriders opted to bring back some competition with Couch being re-signed on Monday. Article content 'Obviously being here last year, they recognized that I could just fit in and get the job done,' said the 5-foot-11, 210-pounder. 'And obviously I was really happy to be back when they called me so I get to see the boys again.'
