Elon Musk announces Trump administration exit, says scheduled time ‘comes to an end'

Elon Musk departed his position within the US government on Wednesday after leading the Department of Government Efficiency in an effort to slash federal spending. 'As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,' Musk said via X. As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 29, 2025 A White House official told Reuters that Mr Musk is leaving the administration and his 'off-boarding will begin tonight.' Musk's 130-day mandate as a special government employee in the Trump administration was set to expire around May 30. The administration has said Doge's efforts to restructure and shrink the federal government will continue. Musk and Doge have cut nearly 12 per cent, or 260,000 people, from the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce through threats of firings, buyouts and early retirement offers, Reuters reported. Musk's departure comes after he criticised the price tag of Republicans' tax and budget legislation making its way through Congress. 'I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the Doge team is doing,' Musk told CBS News. The world's richest person's political activities have drawn protests and some investors have called for Musk to leave his work as Trump's adviser and manage Tesla more closely.

Trump says Canada's Golden Dome membership costs $61 billion — or free as 51st state

Article content ( @realDonaldTrump - Truth Social Post ) ( Donald J. Trump - May 27, 2025, 5:41 PM ET ) I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO… — Donald J. Trump 🇺🇸 TRUTH POSTS (@TruthTrumpPosts) May 27, 2025 Prime Minister Mark Carney's office didn't say whether it received such an offer when contacted by National Post, but said discussions on NORAD and the Golden Dome have been part of 'wide-ranging and constructive discussions' Carney and his ministers have had with U.S. counterparts. But while acting on his citizen-driven mandate to establish a new relationship with the U.S., his office said, 'the Prime Minister has been clear at every opportunity, including in his conversations with President Trump, that Canada is an independent, sovereign nation, and it will remain one.' National Post has contacted the White House press secretary and is awaiting a response. The president first announced the Golden Dome initiative in the Oval Office last week, remarking during his address and in questioning from reporters that 'Canada wants to be part of it' and will 'pay their fair share.'

Donald Trump reveals he 'is in trouble' with wife Melania as he mocks trans athletes at a college event

Source: X/@realDonaldTrump US President Donald Trump caused fresh controversy on Thursday night during his commencement address at the University of Alabama , where he openly mocked a transgender athlete — even after admitting his wife, Melania, disapproved of him doing so. Speaking to a packed crowd at Coleman Coliseum, Trump criticized the inclusion of transgender women in women's sports, particularly in weightlifting. Before launching into an impersonation, he told the audience, 'Should I imitate him? My wife gets very upset when I do this. She says, 'Darling, it's not presidential,' I say, 'Yeah, but people like it.'' Source: X/@realDonaldTrump Despite Melania's alleged concerns, Trump went ahead. 'All right, I'm in trouble when I get home, but that's OK, what the hell. I've been in lots of trouble before,' he said, prompting laughter from the crowd. He then acted out a scene comparing a female weightlifter and a transgender athlete, saying, 'The greatest is like weightlifting, you ever see the weightlifting? Where they have a record that wasn't broken in 18 years.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Direct shopping From Adidas Franchise Store... He followed it by depicting a transgender competitor outperforming her. 'Then a guy comes along or a gal or whatever,' Trump said. 'A transitioned person and he was a failed weightlifter as a male, but he comes along 206 pounds, they put the little thing on and just 'boom, boom, boom.'' Source: X/@realDonaldTrump He concluded the performance with the line: 'That's not right.' The timing of Trump's comments comes just days after his administration announced that the University of Pennsylvania violated federal civil rights laws by allowing transgender athletes to compete in women's sports. According to the Department of Education, the school's policy breaches Title IX guidelines by allegedly denying equal athletic opportunities to women. UPenn has been given 10 days to resolve the issue voluntarily or risk legal action from the Department of Justice.
