Newsom: Trump wants LA unrest to divide us, using anti-ICE protest fallout for political gain

The Brief California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President Trump for sending the National Guard to Los Angeles County, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. Newsom accused Trump of using the unrest for political gain and creating a constitutional crisis. Trump responded by blaming Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass for failing to manage the protests effectively. LOS ANGELES - California Governor Gavin Newsom is accusing President Donald Trump of being reckless with the federal response to the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles County. What we know In an interview with FOX 11's Elex Michaelson, Newsom blasted Trump for sending the National Guard to LA County, which the California Governor claims is illegal and unconstitutional. "Donald Trump is reckless, he's immoral," Newsom said. "He's acting unlawfully. He's putting people's lives at risk. And it's my job to clean up Donald Trump's mess, because he's making it by the hour." Newsom's rant against Trump comes after the National Guard clashed with civilians – which includes anti-ICE protesters and agitators with no ties to immigration advocacy – on Sunday, June 8 in downtown Los Angeles. The California Governor claims Trump using the weekend of unrest in Los Angeles County for political gain by dividing the nation and undermining the rule of law and democracy. "It's been a disastrous presidency and so, of course, we're here with another distraction that puts, in this case, people's lives at risk, and he's testing the boundaries of the Constitution in a way that we can clearly argue is a constitutional crisis," Newsom told Michaelson on Sunday. The other side Trump accused Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of not getting the job done during the earlier stages of the 3-day protests in LA County. "If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can't do their jobs, which everyone knows they can't, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved," Trump wrote on his Truth Social page. In a separate post, Trump claimed Newsom had been "incompetent," dating back to California's response to the Jan. 2025 wildfires. "We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to to handle the task," Trump wrote on Truth Social. More than 20 people injured after boat catches fire in New York; captain charged with DWI

A boat captain was arrested after the vessel caught fire and injured more than 20 people near City Island in The Bronx over the weekend. Joshua Brito, 33, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment following the incident that happened on Saturday at around 8 p.m. near the east end of Hart Island, according to WABC. The 22 people on the boat were injured, including one person in critical condition. Powerful House Explosion Caught On Camera In Missouri Kills 1 Person, 1 Dog According to officials, Marine 4, a New York City Fire Department vessel, was doing a routine patrol in the area when the boat on fire was spotted in the Long Island Sound. "At that point, the Bronx dispatcher had land units respond to come into City Island and begin to accept patients. Marine 4 grabbed three people out of the water. At that point, they transported them to one of the docks that was close by, where Engine 70 was waiting and EMS was waiting as well to begin CPR on the victims." "The other 19 folks swam to Hart Island," he continued. "They were just off the east end of Hart Island, and then they were picked up by the NYPD Coast Guard and FDNY boats and transported back over to the docks at the Yacht Club on City Island." Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. "The boat, in order to fit that many people on it, had to be a pretty decent-sized boat," Meyers told reporters at the scene on Saturday. "Marine 4 did notice them earlier in the evening and they said there was a lot of people on that boat."Original article source: More than 20 people injured after boat catches fire in New York; captain charged with DWI

New James Bond game ‘007 First Light' unveiled

While film fans continue to wait for an official announcement regarding the identity of the new James Bond and when the secret agent will be back on the big screen, gamers will be thrilled by the announcement of a new video game which hits consoles next year. Developed and published by IO Interactive, the folks behind Hitman, 007 First Light just got its first trailer, which was released during PlayStation's State of Play. 'This is Bond as you've never seen him before - the youngest Bond fans have ever met,' reads the description. 'In 007 First Light, at only 26 years old, he isn't the fully fledged 007 you know from the tux-and-martini days but a man with sharp instincts, sometimes reckless, who is still learning when to fight, when to bluff, and when to disappear into the shadows." The 'completely original standalone story', developed in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, will see a young Bond earn his designation as 007 – much like he did at the start of Casino Royale, Daniel Craig's first outing as Bond. The trailer sees M describe the young spy as 'a bullet without a target' and assigns him a mission in hopes of giving Bond a sense of focus. Check it out below: The game was first announced in 2020 and a deeper look at 007 First Light's gameplay is set to be revealed this summer. In 2021, IO CEO Hakan Abrak said: 'It was very important for us that it wasn't a movie adaptation. It's not a game about a specific movie, where the story has already been told. Every Bond defines a generation and it's amazing how they kept reinventing themselves over so many years.' 007 First Light will be the first James Bond game to release in 14 years. The last Bond title to launch was 2012's poorly received 007 Legends, released to celebrate the iconic film series' 50th anniversary. Bond fans have already expressed their excitement for the new video game. 'I'm excited for this. I've got no doubt IOI can nail the infiltration gameplay and level design, hopefully they get the action elements right too,' wrote one fan, while another said: 'James Bond has been so under-utilised for the last few generations. I'm so stoked to see 007 make a return.' Others have been wondering whether the game reveal is a sign that things are speeding up for a cinematic announcement. The next James Bond film – now under the creative control of Amazon - is apparently being fast-tracked, with rumours suggesting that the 26th adventure will hit cinemas by the end of 2027. That means that when the next Bond film arrives, it will match the record for the longest wait for a new 007 since Sean Connery first played the British spy in 1962's Dr No. The previous record was GoldenEye, which was released in 1995 - six years after Timothy Dalton appeared in Licence to Kill. The 2015-2021 pause between SPECTRE and No Time To Die already gave that record a run for its money, primarily due to the Covid pandemic which delayed the release of the film. We already know that the 26th Bond film will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, and last month, we asked: Could Aaron Taylor-Johnson becoming Omega brand ambassador betheJames Bond confirmation we've all been waiting for? The wait continues...

Oakland County mom accused of leaving loaded gun in 3-year-old's backpack

An Oakland County, Michigan, mother is accused of leaving a loaded gun in her 3-year-old's backpack when she dropped her child off at a daycare center. Prosecutors say on May 14, Kelly Reid, 34, of West Bloomfield, dropped off her child at a center in Royal Oak and handed staff a backpack that was supposed to contain her child's snack. When a staff member opened the backpack, they reportedly found a loaded gun. Officials accuse Reid of putting the gun in the backpack to carry it to and from her vehicle, but she did not remove the firearm before dropping off her child. Reid is charged with misdemeanor reckless use of a firearm. "I'm grateful this is a story about a misdemeanor charge instead of a tragedy," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a statement. "A loaded gun needs to be secured. Failing to do so around small children is absolutely reckless. The employee who found the gun should be commended for quickly securing it and contacting police." If found guilty, Reid faces up to 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. The court can also suspend hunting privileges for up to three years.

Anthropic's Blog Has a Ghostwriter—And It's a Robot Named Claude (Sort Of)

Let's not bury the lede: Anthropic is letting its AI write the blog now. But before you roll your eyes and mutter something about Skynet getting a byline, there's a catch—it's not just AI churning out content and hitting publish. The humans are still very much in the loop. This new content experiment is called Claude Explains, and it's basically Anthropic's attempt to blend algorithmic horsepower with actual editorial judgment. The pieces—mostly technical explainers, use-case walkthroughs, and thinky essays—are drafted by Claude, their in-house AI model family. Then they're passed to human editors for what the company claims is a 'significant editorial process.' (Read: They fix the weird AI bits and make it sound like a human didn't hallucinate it.) 'We're not letting Claude go rogue,' an Anthropic spokesperson insisted. 'Experts go over every piece—fact-checking, smoothing tone, and making sure it's actually helpful.' It's an interesting pivot. The broader AI industry has been barreling into content creation like a freight train with no brakes—churning out SEO sludge, clickbait scripts, and AI-generated nonsense at record speed. Anthropic? They're at least pretending to tap the brakes. They're framing this as a values thing. Anthropic's whole pitch has always been 'safe, steerable AI aligned with human goals,' and that ethos shows up here. They're not just pushing content—they're testing what happens when an AI writes with humans instead of for them. Take a look at some of the blog entries: 'Simplify Complex Codebases with Claude' 'How Claude Approaches Ethical Reasoning' 'Breaking Down Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback' What you'll notice: these are meaty topics, the kind that usually live behind paywalled whitepapers or in obscure arXiv preprints. Claude spits out the initial takes, and then human editors—many with domain expertise—tighten the bolts and make the thing actually readable. It's AI as the first draft, not the final word. In theory, this speeds up content workflows without fully automating them. More insight, less burnout. Faster publishing, fewer hallucinated citations. That's the dream, anyway. But let's be honest: this isn't just a neat blog feature. It's a pressure test. Right now, the internet is absolutely awash in AI-generated slop. From fake news articles to generic blogspam to AI influencers that barely pass a Turing test, it's getting harder to separate signal from noise. So what Anthropic's doing here—putting their AI's name in lights but keeping the humans in the editor's chair—is a gamble on transparency as a trust strategy. They could've easily ghostwrote this stuff with Claude and slapped someone else's name on it. Instead, they're owning it—and putting guardrails around it. The meta-message? AI can be useful. But don't get lazy. Don't get reckless. 'If this works,' the Anthropic rep said, 'Claude Explains could show how AI can support real, meaningful communication. But the human part stays essential.' That's the punchline: Claude's not taking your job. At least not yet. But it is learning how to draft your next blog post. You just might want to proofread it first. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
