MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee man is now charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pastor's wife and injured her grandson in January. FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android Prosecutors accuse Miller of second-degree reckless homicide and hit-and-run, among other crimes. His bond was set at $150,000, and a competency exam was ordered, during his initial appearance on Friday. The backstory Beverly Fair, 70, and her grandson had left a loved one's house on Jan. 4 when a speeding car hit their SUV near 34th and Lloyd. Fair died, and her grandson was injured. FOX6 News obtained surveillance video that showed a portion of the hit-and-run crash. It showed at least one car going into the front yard of a home. There was debris and car parts all over the street; the impact from the crash was so forceful, debris even landed on a nearby front porch. According to a criminal complaint, officers had spotted the car speeding and driving without a front license plate near 35th and Vine. Officers tried to catch up to the car and turned on their lights and sirens, but temporarily lost sight of the car. When they regained sight of it, it had already crashed into the SUV. Court filings said the driver, identified as Miller, fled the scene. He abandoned the car with the keys still in the ignition and his cellphone inside. The car had a Minnesota license plate that was not registered to the vehicle. However, a VIN search listed it to Miller – who was already a known suspect in a 2023 police chase. SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News Investigators later searched Miller's apartment and found "car papers" and documents pertinent to the vehicle that had been abandoned at the crash scene, according to the complaint. DNA evidence collected from the car was found to be "consistent with" Miller being the driver at the time of the crash as well. Further, the complaint states Miller did not have a valid driver's license at the time of the crash. Records also showed his operating privileges had been suspended in September 2024 for reasons related to a 2022 crash in which Miller is accused of fleeing police. Racine teen charged with fatally shooting brother, 11; family claims it was accident
Criminal charges have been filed against a Racine teenager in the shooting death last week of his 11-year-old brother. Racine County prosecutors on May 21 charged Pedro Sauceda, 16, with first-degree reckless homicide in Jesus Valladares' May 16 killing. He claimed in a criminal complaint he was playing around with the firearm, and that he didn't know it was loaded until it discharged. More: UW-Platteville students died in shootings, one self-inflicted, officials say The complaint says officers were called to a home on the 2600 block of Prospect Street on a report that a juvenile had been shot. Officers arrived and found Sauceda at the scene, kneeling and asking them to kill him, the document said. Sauceda was subdued as he stood up and walked toward the officers. Sauceda's sister told investigators she loaded the gun with one bullet. Her plan was to fire it while visiting a cemetery to honor a deceased relative's birthday, the document says. More: 3 teenagers among 7 people injured in separate Milwaukee shootings over the weekend The sister never fired the weapon and it was still loaded when the family returned home. Witnesses in the home told investigators Sauceda and Jesus were "play fighting" with the gun, according the complaint. They had done that on previous times, but the gun was normally not loaded. Sauceda told investigators he was playing with the gun in the house and that it went off when Jesus tried to take it from him. More: Milwaukee teen accidentally shoots, kills mother while trying to stop stepdad's assault on her Authorities noted in the report the child's gunshot wound had a dark, black circle around it, indicating the weapon was pressed closely against the victim as it was fired. Sauceda is expected to be in court May 28 for a preliminary hearing.
