Lisa Armstrong: Terrified of wearing red? This is how to pull it off
Red is a colour that many people won't even contemplate wearing, but also one that some folk probably wear too much of. These two facts may well be related. Butlin's, Virgin Atlantic, Father Christmas – all endearing figures in their way. But self-evidently not chic. They were not conjured into existence to compete with Wallis Simpson, nor Nick Cave, but to be jolly and sell a shedload of merch. Consider some of the world's most monetised products: ketchup, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's, KFC… the list is practically endless and, frankly, reciting this edited selection is almost putting me off, so I turn instead to what enticed me to write about red in the first place. Firstly, in all its myriad shades, red offers an uplifting glow-up for all. (If you're still searching for your red lipstick, Code8 will custom-blend one for you.) Second: the recent Toteme show in Paris. Rare is the catwalk that offers a simple, practical takeaway. But here it is: wear red – in small doses. Toteme, the Scandinavian label beloved by stylish women across the globe for its understated aesthetic, drizzled droplets of red across a grand total of two outfits. No need to scare the horses. But it was so unexpected, so stylish, that it made wearing a primary colour when you're a committed disciple of camel, cream and black look like the only sensible move to avoid dying of boredom. A small red clutch bag worn with a slim, oyster-coloured shirt dress and oyster satin boots, a pair of red shoes with black trousers and an oyster-coloured tie-back jumper, and – er, that was it really. Less is always more in some circles. Introducing the barest notion of red to its fans, albeit in micro-specks, was already quite a declaration. I've gone a bit mad in my embrace of red here – at least by Toteme standards. The thing is, the vest was a bit skimpy without the cardi, and before I knew it, I was full-on twin-setting. But note, please, the delicate white trim of the tank beneath, another little vest from Rise & Fall. It's remarkable how a contrast trim nearly always helps pull an outfit together, hence the enduring appeal of a classic Chanel tweed jacket. Flecks and tweeds are much more flattering and versatile than a block red jacket, for which it's almost impossible to find the exact match and hard to find a partnering colour that doesn't look brash. Red dresses are easy – it's all done for you. Case in point this cotton tiered maxi dress from Karen Millen below. No need for gold accessories, or anything much else. Stick with the one-bullet approach. Bull's-eye. Touches of red

Welsh Labour leader to criticise Keir Starmer in major speech
LABOUR'S leader in Wales will insist that she 'will not stay silent' if the Westminster leadership make 'decisions that we think will harm Welsh communities', days after Keir Starmer lost swathes of seats to Reform UK in England. In a speech marking one year to the 2026 Senedd election, First Minister Eluned Morgan will say that she 'will not hesitate to challenge from within' and is reportedly set to criticise Keir Starmer's welfare reforms. The Guardian has reported that she will pursue a left-wing 'red Welsh way' and put a clear dividing line between Welsh Labour and the UK party. It will pile pressure on Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has so far backed the Prime Minister to the hilt. She will also say that 'the future of Wales is at stake', as the party looks to the challenge from Nigel Farage's Reform UK, one year out from the vote. READ MORE: John Swinney to deliver Programme for Government – how to watch The intervention from Labour's most senior figure in Wales comes after a bruising set of local election results in England for Starmer, which saw the party lose the only council it was defending to Reform, plus a parliamentary by-election. The Prime Minister faced pressure to reverse his party's fortunes over the weekend, with changes to the winter fuel allowance among the measures singled out by Labour figures as a problem. A Government source denied a report on Monday evening that Downing Street was rethinking a policy change on the matter. Polling by Survation in April suggested that voters are split three ways when it comes to the Senedd elections, with Labour on 27%, and Reform and Plaid Cymru both on 24%. (Image: Henry Nicholls/PA Wire) Such numbers would mark a significant downturn in the Labour vote, after the party managed to secure 39.9% in the last elections in 2021. In the same contest, Plaid Cymru got 20.3% of the vote, while Reform got 1.6%. Speaking in Cardiff on Tuesday, Morgan is expected to say when it comes to working with the UK Government: 'Where we disagree, we'll say it, where we see unfairness we'll stand up to it. 'And when Westminster makes decisions that we think will harm Welsh communities, we will not stay silent.' She will also say: 'I will not hesitate to challenge from within, even when it means shaking things up and disrupting the comfortable.' In recent weeks, Morgan has called for Wales to receive a 'significant share' of a Government clean steel fund in the wake of ministers intervening in Scunthorpe, telling Senedd members that 'we do not want to see this funding going on supporting the Scunthorpe plant at the expense of the situation in Welsh steel'. The Senedd elections next spring will be Morgan's first as party leader, having assumed the role last summer. She will say that she knew the 'weight of responsibility' when she took on that role, and that 'change was not only coming, it was needed'. 'A new voting system. A new era. A government that's already delivered for 27 years. Now, with the rise of Reform and the risks of a divided left vote, the future of Wales is at stake,' she will add. She is also expected to say that 'our politics isn't about putting people down, it's about quiet determination. It's about care, compassion, graft. It is about solidarity not spite'. Reform won control of 10 local authorities in England last week, after they won more than 600 seats across the local elections. Farage has the Welsh and Scottish parliaments in his sights, as he said on Friday that 'next year we will go for the Welsh and Scottish parliamentary elections, and I believe we can and we will win that next general election'. Starmer faced pushback in the wake of the English results, with policies such as changes to the winter fuel allowance and welfare reforms among those criticised by Labour figures. He was also warned that right-wing parties would make gains at their expense if they do not offer the change that voters want.

Greggs has revealed it is adding a popular trial food item to its summer menu, with taste testers having previously described it as 'unreal'. The bakery has announced it will be rolling out its highly sought-after Mac and Cheese across UK branches - with more than 1,750 locations set to stock the dish by the end of July. The new product features freshly cooked pasta combined with a decadent sauce made from a blend of cheddar and red Leicester cheese and topped with a delicious ciabatta crumb. The cheese-packed pasta dish was first launched in Manchester stores in November 2024 as part of a trial to test out new menu items. First impressions from foodies were positive, with dozens hailing its 'incredible' flavour. The pre-prepared pasta first hit shelves in 10 different shops across the northern city, where it proved a hit among customers. Following its initial success, Greggs later expanded to a number a further 300 shops across the country. Of the chain's 2,600 eateries, more than half are set to make the scrumptious pasta a permanent feature of their menus. The Mac and Cheese quickly became a hit among foodies who rushed to snaffle up the cheesy treat before it was briefly swept from shelves at the end of it's trial. The budget-bakery has announced that it will be rolling out its highly sought-after Mac and Cheese across UK branches - with more than 1,750 locations set to stock the dish by the end of July Included as part of the bakery's new summer menu, the creamy pasta will be available to purchase as a single item for £4.55, or can be scooped up with a drink as part of a meal for £5.75. Describing the dish, the budget bakery described: 'Baked fresh in shops every day, Greggs' Mac & Cheese consists of delicious pasta smothered in a rich, creamy cheese sauce, topped with a soul-comforting blend of Cheddar and Red Leicester, a crunchy layer of ciabatta breadcrumbs and a sprinkle of parsley to form a divine golden crumb. When it was first rolled out across Manchester outlets, foodies left rave reviews of the decadent cheesy dinner. In a video posted to its social media accounts in February earlier this year, Greggs received three million views and thousands of comments, with fans hailing the scrumptious new offering. The bakery captioned the viral video: 'New love triangle just dropped. You, Greggs, Mac & Cheese.' Alongside other videos posted by mac and cheese devotees, dozens were awe-struck by the new find with one writing: 'Oh my gosh I need that mac and cheese.' 'Tried it a few days ago and omg it is great. Wowie,' a second said. 'Oh wow that looks insane,' another wrote. Initial taste testers left rave reviews for when the product was first rolled out 'This looks unreal,' one remarked. 'Wowzers, this looks stunning,' one person wrote. 'My jaw dropped. I'm running to Greggs first thing tomorrow,' another person commented. Another satisfied taster said: 'I bought one for the first time today and I enjoyed it, so I'm going to get another tomorrow and a triple chocolate doughnut.' However - not everyone was as impressed by the new offering, with some remarking on the price-tag and others suspecting it would be 'dry' from sitting under the instore hot-lights. One perturbed tester wrote: 'It's absolutely disgusting had it yesterday! £4.55 as well it was all stuck together slip.' Another clip posted by the social media influencer, Carmie Sellitto, amassed a whopping 1.5 million views from viewers. Despite having sampled some of the nation's most expensive and sought-after foods, the food influencer had only positive things to say about Greggs' pasta dish. 'Wow! I actually ate this so quickly I couldn't take a second to breathe, I was so excited!' he said in the video. The Mac & Cheese will expand from its current 300 shops to over 1,750 locations nationwide by July's end. Rothy's has a secret sale — get 50% off the cutest flats and sandals
When it comes to shoes that whisper 'I've got this' without screaming for attention, Rothy's has mastered the art. They're the rare kind of flat you can walk ten city blocks in — or ten thousand — without having to stage a mid-day footwear intervention. I've owned more pairs than I care to admit, and each one has held up through subway stairs, surprise rain and more than one spontaneous uptown-to-downtown detour. The brand's specialty? Flats with range. Think ballet silhouettes, sneakers, laid-back loafers, sunny-day sandals — all made from a stretchy knit material spun from recycled plastic water bottles, according to the brand. Another thing to know about the brand? Site-wide sales are rare. However, there is a section that many people don't know about called ' Final Few, ' where select styles are on sale. It's important to note that shoes and accessories in this section are final sale, so they cannot be returned. But there are several great deals and some styles are up to 50% off. To help you navigate Rothy's Final Few sale, we've rounded up some of the best deals below. The Point Mary Jane II This Mary Jane style flat has a pointed toe and a thin strap across the top of your foot. It has a roomy toe box despite the pointed toe, according to the brand. The upper is made of stretchy material to mold to your foot and move with you as you walk. Four of the five available colors are marked down — red crisp, sandstone, bronze and black. The Ballet Flat You can't get more classic than a ballet flat. This one features a round toe and bow detail. These flats are also machine-washable, making them easy to clean. Along with the black color, seven other colors are on sale, including glamour red and goldstone. The Classic Clog Clogs can be clunky, but these have a 2-inch cork sole to keep them lightweight. They also have a strap with a buckle, allowing you to customize the fit and a contoured foam footbed for comfort. These clogs are available in black or butternut. The Weekend Slide It's a good time to refresh your sandal options as summer approaches. This slide has a knit upper made from a blend of hemp and recycled water bottles and a plush footbed for comfort, according to the brand. Five of the colors offered are currently on sale — including indigo, sangria stripe and vanilla cone. The Casual Sling This bag can be worn as a crossbody, a fanny pack or over the shoulder. There is one main zippered compartment that can hold a phone, wallet and keys. The strap is also detachable and adjustable so that it can be shortened or lengthened to your liking. Only the puffin color is on sale — which features a black main compartment and ivory and tan detailing. Currently on sale at Rothy's for men The Driving Loafer This driving loafer has textured nubs on the sole for traction — and they run up the back of the heel to avoid wear and tear from angling your foot to hit the gas and break when driving. The upper is made from a flexible knit and the footbed has plush cushioning for comfort, according to the brand. This slip-on sneaker has a sleek look that makes it easy to dress up or down. The machine-washable shoe has a flexible knit upper and white rubber sole. The footbed offers some arch support and moderate cushioning.
