Jack Draper earning more ‘respect' with rise but insists attitude will not change

Life as a top player at a grand slam has always been a world apart from the sober reality of being one of the rank and file. The best are routinely scheduled on the biggest stadiums, sometimes assigned exclusive changing rooms and receive preferential practice‑court assignments, among countless other advantages. Over the past few years, Jack Draper has experienced how differently his peers treat him as he has achieved greater success. Four years ago, when he made his ATP debut at the Miami Open, he struggled to secure a hitting partner. It is a different story today. 'It's natural,' Draper said. 'When you are new, nobody knows you. Especially on the tour. It's work. You want to hit with a good player. And if you don't know that person, if they are young or whatever, then you might probably think: 'Oh, I'd rather hit with someone else.' 'I have never been like that. I don't really care who I hit with, whether it's a hitting partner or a top player. I always try to get the best out of myself. That is natural – as you play more, as you are in the changing rooms more, as you win more matches, people give you the respect.' Although many tend to pair status and on-court achievements with respect, Draper says he is only interested in the character and integrity of those around him: 'Some players definitely give respect because of the tennis. Whereas I have always been the person [who thinks] it's just hitting a ball over a net. I give respect to people who are good people and who have good values, who show their character in a really good way. That's most important to me.' At a time when his success continues to generate more interest and attention, the past few months have underlined to Draper the importance of leaning on his family and close friends. He constantly speaks about his family and tries to spend the free time he has at home with them. This time, they have come to him. Alongside his coaching team and his brother, Ben, who is also his agent, Draper is joined in Paris by his mother, Nicky, and his maternal grandfather, Chris. 'He doesn't do too much travel,' Draper said, smiling, while discussing his grandfather. 'My grandparents are a huge part of my world. He's always on the live ranking, watching my tennis. He's obsessed with it. Gives him so much life. So to have him out here … my brother and mum can look after him a little bit. He just loves tennis so to have him here is a massive thing for me. His wife, my nana, who has dementia, that was a big part of her world. To have him here it's very, very special.' With five British singles players – Draper, Katie Boulter, Jacob Fearnley, Sonay Kartal and Cameron Norrie – in second-round action on Thursday, Draper will have to face one of the most adversarial audiences of his career when he plays Gaël Monfils in front of the 38-year-old's notoriously harsh home crowd. Monfils pulled off a typically magical comeback on Tuesday night, fighting back from two sets down to defeat the Bolivian Hugo Dellien. 'I always said Jack would be a top-10 player,' Monfils said. '[When] he was a youngster, played a lot in the practice. I really like the kid. He's a fantastic player. He's a top five. He has a lot of weapons. It's going to be a hard one. He's in full confidence.'

Chris Bowen sparks outrage after he is caught eating pasta at Catholic mass: 'Rude'

Chris Bowen has been criticised by a Catholic priest for tucking into a bowl of pasta during mass. The Minister for Climate Change and Energy attended a morning mass at the Italian festival Festa Della Republica at Club Marconi in Bossley Park, south west Sydney, on Sunday. Witnesses told the Daily Telegraph Bowen arrived midway through the mass while people were taking communion, before sitting in the front row where he began to eat his pasta. Reverend Anthony Fregolent, who was leading the mass, told the paper Bown needed to show more 'respect' for the 'sacredness of the place'. 'When you arrive halfway through the service, you should go to your place and be quiet,' he said. 'The welcoming is very important in our faith and our religion, but also the respect for the sacredness of the place is important.' Rev Fregolent finished his mass, which was in Italian, with a request for people not to eat during the service. Several witnesses accused the Labor frontbencher of being 'rude' and showing disrespect. 'There is a mass which Mr Bowen did not attend followed by a public event which he did,' they told the paper. 'He did not realise the mass was in the final stages when he entered the marquee, as people were leaving. If he had realised, he would have waited a few minutes.' Bowen shared several pictures of himself at the festival on social media, including one of his bowl of pasta. 'Wonderful to join our local community to celebrate this important day at Club Marconi, in the heart of South-Western Sydney,' he captioned the post.

Nicole Chan Cheuk-ying, 15, Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School: Respect and be friendly to your fellow students. While we often emphasise the importance of respecting our teachers, many people seem to overlook the need to respect their classmates. Our schoolmates play an important role in our school lives, so why not value and appreciate them as well? Megan Lam, 11, Good Hope Primary School cum Kindergarten: Backstabbing should be banned because it arises from hate and jealousy, causing even the closest friends to betray one another. When a friend reveals your secrets to a teacher, it is incredibly hurtful and undermines trust. Promoting honesty and loyalty is essential for creating a positive school environment. Sana Zaman Wong Sum-wai, 14, PLK Mrs Ma Kam Ming Cheung Fook Sien College: I would implement a daily 20-minute 'Calm Corner Time' for mindfulness activities such as meditation and deep breathing. Given that students struggle with sleep and concentration due to stress, this practice will promote relaxation and enhance overall well-being, fostering a positive school environment.

Colapinto urges respect after online abuse against Tsunoda

Franco Colapinto is making his season debut for Renault-owned Alpine at Imola. (AP pic) IMOLA : Argentine Formula One rookie Franco Colapinto has urged his fans to be respectful after Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda received online abuse at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Colapinto, who is making his season debut for Renault-owned Alpine at Imola after replacing dropped Australian Jack Doohan, accidentally blocked Tsunoda in the first Friday practice with the Japanese gesticulating back. After the practice, Tsunoda received a series of abusive comments – much of them in Spanish – on his Instagram feed. 'I know they are extremely passionate, and they are always very harsh on people. They have to give respect, and that's what we all want,' Colapinto told reporters. 'There is a lot of hate on social media… so of course we always try and want, for all the drivers, to keep it respectful and keep it calm there.' Both Tsunoda and Colapinto crashed heavily in separate incidents during yesterday's qualifying. Back in February, after Colapinto joined Alpine as reserve with a widespread expectation that he would replace Doohan, the Argentine's manager urged fans to be supportive of the whole team. 'The haters who think they help Franco. You are doing him more harm than good,' Jamie Campbell-Walter posted on the X social media platform after Doohan received abuse. Tsunoda, who stepped up to the main Red Bull team from Racing Bulls in April as replacement for demoted Liam Lawson, told reporters he was aware of the situation and Formula One might have to step in eventually. 'If it continues and it's getting worse and worse, then at some point F1 should say something,' he said.
