Live Russia hits Ukraine with retaliatory strikes ahead of peace talks
Russia bombarded Ukraine with retaliatory strikes overnight, with air attacks killing five people outside the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. The strikes follow Ukraine's mass drone attack on Russia's bomber bases on Sunday, a coordinated operation that took 18 months to execute. The north-east Ukrainian region of Sumy was also hit by a Russian drone attack which injured at least six people early on Monday, including two children. The escalation in conflict comes as Russian and Ukrainian officials are due to sit down today in Istanbul for their second round of direct peace talks since 2022.

Pakistan launches 'military operation' against India - as nuclear command group meets
Pakistan has launched attacks on "multiple targets" across India, according to the media wing of Pakistan's military. Pakistan said in a statement that retaliatory attacks are under way in response to what it called "continuous provocation" by India, which it accuses of firing missiles at three airbases inside Pakistan. Pakistan's military said it used medium-range Fateh missiles to strike more than 25 military sites, including airbases and weapons depots in the Indian states of Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan, as well as locations in India-administered Kashmir. India's army responded on X to what it described as Pakistan's "blatant escalation with drone strikes and other munitions" along its western borders, adding they were "instantly engaged and destroyed" by air defences. Pakistan's military posted footage on X showing missiles being fired from what appeared to be a mobile launcher. The AP news agency also said loud explosions have been heard in India-administered Kashmir, in the disputed region's two big cities of Srinagar and Jammu, and the garrison town of Udhampur. Five people were killed in the Jammu region, Indian police told the Reuters news agency. It marks the latest escalation in a conflict between the two nuclear-armed rivals, triggered by a deadly attack last month in India-administered Kashmir. Most of the 26 civilians killed were Hindu Indian tourists. India blames Pakistan for backing the assault, an accusation Islamabad rejects. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the National Command Authority, the body which takes security decisions, including those related to the country's nuclear arsenal. On state-run Pakistan television, military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said three air bases were struck by India on Friday, although Pakistan insisted most of the missiles had been intercepted. "India through its planes launched air-to-surface missiles... [targeting] Noor Khan base, Murid base and Shorkot base," he said. Despite the military offensive, Pakistan Armed Forces (PAF) also posted a message on X in what appeared to represent an opportunity to de-escalate the situation. "Now that a response has been given we hope the neighbour [India] will move to dialogue and diplomacy like civilised nations," it said. US secretary of state Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistan's army chief general Asim Munir on Friday to "urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate" and offer "US assistance in starting constructive talks in order to avoid future conflicts". In recent days, both countries have launched a series of missile and drone strikes, although the scale and impact have been consistently questioned by each other. On Wednesday, India conducted airstrikes on several sites in Pakistani territory. Pakistan said it shot down five Indian fighter jets. On Thursday, India claimed to have repelled drone and missile attacks at military targets in more than a dozen cities and towns, including Jammu in India-administered Kashmir. Meanwhile, India claimed it struck Pakistan's air defence systems and radars close to the city of Lahore. The Indian army said on Friday that Pakistan fired about 300 to 400 drones, targeting military installations along the western borders - a claim strongly denied by Pakistan. The G7 group of advanced economies, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and Britain, urged maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan. "We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome," a statement issued on Friday said. Surfing legend Stephanie Gilmore beaten by rival less than half her age at Gold Coast Pro. Pakistan's army says they have begun launching retaliatory strikes against India after accusing them of firing missiles at three of their air bases. Al Jazeera reports Pakistan has targeted military bases in the Indian cities of Beas Pathankot and Udhampur according to a military source. Earlier, Army spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry said India had targeted bases in the Pakistani cities of Rawalpindi and Chakwal as well as the Jhang district in the eastern Punjab province. He says the missiles that were not intercepted have not damaged Pakistan's air force capacity. "The few that have been able to sneak in have not been able to cause any damage to the flying assets of Pakistan Air Force I want to assure the people of Pakistan that your armed forces are vigilant and thwarting all these cowardly acts of aggression by the Indians. This is part of the larger sinister plan to push the region and beyond into havoc.' Indian and Pakistani soldiers have exchanged shells and gunfire across their frontier in the disputed region of Kashmir overnight in a growing military standoff that erupted following an attack on tourists. United States President Donald Trump says leaders from both Russia and Ukraine should end the war immediately after the US embassy in Kyiv warned of a potentially significant air attack in the coming days, The White House says President Trump says he had a good and productive call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday [[8th May]], adding Mr Trump hopes both Ukraine and Russia will agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire next week. Ukraine has been pressuring Russia to accept the US proposed ceasefire as part of moves towards a peace agreement. Donald Trump says he needs to see an attempt from both sides to end hostilities. "I have a message for both parties. Get this war ended. We're losing 5,000 soldiers a week. Russian and Ukrainian soldiers and other people also, by the way. And I say, get this stupid war finished." Australia's highest-ranking Catholic official has congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as head of the church. The 45-year-old Ukrainian-born Bishop, Mykola Bychok, took part in the election of the new pope at the conclave in the Vatican. Appointed as cardinal by Pope Francis last December the Melbourne church leader is the youngest cardinal in the Catholic Church and the first Australia-based cardinal since George Pell. He says the appointment of the first US pope, Leo XIV, is an opportunity for the church of about 1.4 billion followers to unite and feel hope for the future. "It was both a tremendous privilege and a solemn responsibility to take place in the conclave. With heartfelt joy and filel devotion I welcome the election of his-holiness Pope Leo XIV. This sacred moment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the church: one filled with hope, prayer and a renewed commitment to unity and mission." Google will pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle claims the company collected users' data without permission. The lawsuit was launched in 2022 when Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Google, saying the search giant collected millions of biometric identifiers, including voiceprints and records of face geometry, through its products and services like Google Photos and Google Assistant. In a statement, Mr Paxton says, "For years, Google secretly tracked people's movements, private searches, and even their voiceprints and facial geometry through their products and services. I fought back and won." Google did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Stephanie Gilmore has been out-surfed by a rival less than half her age but fellow veteran Sally Fitzgibbons is celebrating reaching her first World Surf League semi-final in more than four years at the Gold Coast Pro. Eight-time world champion Gilmore was eliminated by 17-year-old Erin Brooks in the quarter-finals of the Championship Tour event today - which the 36-year-old first won before the Canadian was even born. Social media users say India is following ‘Israeli playbook' in Pakistan
Social media users have likened India's retaliatory strikes on Pakistan to the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, saying that New Delhi is following an 'Israeli playbook' in its response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. Two weeks after India accused Pakistan of harboring terrorists and being involved in the attack on April 22, the Indian army on Wednesday launched a series of precision strikes on what it called 'terrorist infrastructure' in Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir. Following the strikes, Israel's ambassador to India supported New Delhi's right to defend itself against terrorism, a narrative that Israel has often invoked since its bombardment of Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and took some 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israeli strikes have killed more than 51,300 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. 'Israel supports India's right for self-defense. Terrorists should know there's no place to hide from their heinous crimes against the innocent,' Ambassador Reuven Azar posted on X. Several social media users condemned India's strikes on Pakistan, given that they were conducted before officially investigating the Pahalgam attack. Many suggested India was emboldened by Israel's bombardment of Gaza and the perceived impunity it has received from other world actors. A day after the attack on tourists in Indian Kashmir, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had offered his condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that 'Israel stands with India in its fight against terrorism' in a post on X. India accuses Pakistan-based terrorist organizations, including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, for the Pahalgam terror attack. However, Pakistan denies any involvement in the attack and has vowed to retaliate against the missile strikes, and said it shot down five Indian aircraft. The Indian embassy in Beijing termed reports of fighter jets being shot down as 'misinformation.' Ties between India and Israel have recently strengthened after Modi became the first Indian leader to visit the country in 2017.
