Family SUVs face road tax hikes under new proposals pushed by Labour politicians

Family SUVs could be targeted with hikes in road tax and parking permits under proposals being pushed for by Labour politicians. The call for higher levies on large SUVs, often chosen by families for their space, came from Labour and Green party members of the London Assembly. The motion was passed this week amid concerns about 'car-spreading' – where more road space is taken up by larger vehicles – and calls on London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to write to the Treasury and ask for vehicle excise duty (VED, or road tax) to incorporate a 'progressive' element that includes the vehicle's weight. If introduced, this would mean SUV-driving families in the UK face being hit with much larger road tax bills. Many SUV drivers already pay £600 for the first five years on new models under the premium car tax fee, which levies more against vehicles worth over £40,000. The standard road tax rate is £195 per year. The motion also asked London councils to look at hiking the cost of parking permits in the capital for SUVs, so as 'to account for pressure they put on road space and local parking spaces'. But critics accused Labour of declaring war on drivers, with AA president Edmund King, saying: 'It is up to Londoners to choose the type of vehicle that best fulfils their needs.'

JPJ: Sabah, Sarawak drivers can renew road tax at self-service kiosks from June 6 — if vehicle registered in 2020 or later

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM or road tax) renewals for individual private vehicles can be carried out at Road Transport Department (JPJ) kiosks in Sabah and Sarawak starting tomorrow. JPJ, in a statement today, said the renewal service will be available at 41 kiosks; 21 in Sabah and 20 in Sarawak. This service, however, applies only to private vehicles registered from 2020 onwards. 'For individual private vehicles registered before 2020, owners or their representatives must go to the JPJ counters for renewal,' it said. In addition, renewals can also be done via the MyJPJ app, mySIKAP JPJ portal, JPJ mobile counters, and JPJ strategic partners. Vehicle owners are also advised to ensure their motor insurance coverage is valid and active before renewing their road tax at JPJ kiosks, as the system will automatically verify insurance details during the transaction. 'This initiative is part of JPJ's ongoing efforts to enhance service efficiency and provide greater convenience to the public by digitalising its services. 'Through the use of self-service kiosks, users can carry out road tax renewals independently and quickly without needing to queue at the counter,' the statement said. At the same time, JPJ reiterated its commitment to expanding access to digital services, in line with the government's aspirations for a fully digital public service transformation and more efficient service delivery. — Bernama

Drivers take the biggest hit on ‘environmental' taxes

In case drivers were in any doubt about where so-called 'environmental taxes' hit hardest, then new figures from the UK's official Office of National Statistics spell out just how much we're coughing up to fund government expenditure. By far the biggest contribution drivers make to the national coffers comes from fuel duty, which is the cash the government rakes in from every litre of petrol or diesel you put in your tank. In total in 2024, that number hit the £24.6 billion mark. Fuel duty has been the biggest component of energy taxes since 1997, with a similar amount raised annually by schemes such as the Climate Change Levy on energy companies, which adds costs to domestic electricity bills - also paid by many drivers, of course. Advertisement - Article continues below Energy taxes form the biggest chunk of revenues falling under the ONS 'environmental tax' umbrella, but transport taxes are also a big component. Once again, drivers take the most punishment here, with motor vehicle duty paid by UK households and businesses as 'road tax' amounting to £8.2 billion. That means tax on motor vehicles make up almost £33 billion of the £54.2 billion raised by environmental taxes in 2024. The ONS describes these taxes as 'those whose base is a physical unit, for example, a litre of petrol or a passenger flight, that has a proven negative impact on the environment. These taxes should reduce the activity related to these units and therefore reduce negative environmental impacts'. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Last week former Prime Minister Tony Blair ran into trouble with the current Labour administration after saying the UK's net zero environmental policies were 'doomed to fail' and losing sway with voters. Jack Cousens, the AA's head of roads policy, responded to the latest figures by saying that 'drivers will be staggered' by the contribution they're making to environmental taxes, and that although most expect petrol and diesel car use to come with some sort of tax penalty 'the share of the tax-take will be a shock'. The AA also takes issue with the number of what it calls 'stealth taxes' on drivers levied by councils under the environmental banner. 'Environmental taxes now being levied by councils, including those that can reasonably be labelled as stealth taxes, include CO2-related residents parking permits, diesel-related residents parking permits, diesel-related public parking charges, workplace parking levies, city or town parking costs where the council has stated a CO2 justification for high fees,' says Cousens, calling for 'the huge amount of money collected by them to be accounted for, and laid bare to the public.'
