Kona airport runway to close overnight for construction
KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Runway 17-35 at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. until tomorrow at 6 a.m. as part of an ongoing runway rehabilitation project.
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation says the closure will allow crews to install updated lighting, apply new runway markings and continue extending the runway from its temporary 7,000-foot length back to its full 11,000 feet.
Plane lands safely in Honolulu despite gear failure
Since February, flights have continued operating on a reduced runway as construction progresses. The full-length runway is expected to return by Oct. 2, with the entire project running through April 2026.
The work involves rehabilitating both asphalt and concrete surfaces to meet current FAA design standards. HDOT says it has coordinated with airlines to adjust flight times and minimize disruptions. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates.
All work is weather permitting. HDOT appreciates travelers' patience as improvements are made to ensure KOA remains safe and reliable for years to come.
