The circumstances were discovered Wednesday afternoon when liquid was seen seeping through a water utility cover at the intersection of South Main and West Madison streets. "Staff initially believed the water was coming from a water main break," the city's press release issued Monday said. But during the subsequent investigation, the Ann Arbor public works staff realized a collapsed sanitary sewer pipe caused a sanitary sewer overflow. Nearly 8,400 gallons of raw sewage seeped through the road surface and flowed into the storm drain, which flows into Allen Creek, which then flows to the Huron River. After the circumstances were understood, city officials notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) of the sewage leak.

Fairhope sewer overflows reported after heavy rainfall
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fairhope Public Utilities has reported multiple sanitary sewer overflows following a heavy rain event on May 9 and 10. Dauphin Island marina hit hard by storm with boat damage and debris (photos) Officials said approximately 5 inches of rainfall occurred quickly, overwhelming the Doghouse and Valley Lift Stations. Sanitary sewer overflows on Friday between 7 and 9 p.m. and on Saturday at a manhole between 5:30 and 8 a.m. led to a discharge that could affect Cowpen Creek, according to officials. An overflow on Saturday between 6 and 9 a.m. led to discharge that could affect Tatumville Gully, according to a Fairhope Public Utilities news release. The city's Water/Wastewater Department has responded to these incidents following all state and federal regulations, officials said. Fairhope Public Utilities urged residents to use caution in affected waterways and to thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught in those areas. Officials also advised washing hands thoroughly after handling fish or after recreational contact with impacted water.
