West Mifflin school board examining consolidation plan

The West Mifflin school board says it needs more money, but it doesn't want to raise taxes, so it's thinking about consolidating school buildings to cut costs instead. District leaders are considering a proposal to put students from kindergarten to sixth grade in the middle school. The high school would hold seventh through 12th grade. The Titan Cyber Academy would move to Homeville Elementary and Clara Barton Elementary would turn into the district's administration building. Most agree that consolidation is an idea worth looking into, but others think costs can be cut elsewhere. "Maybe we don't need as many administrators, maybe we don't need as many teachers. We don't need as many things that happen if we're that small to go to two buildings," one person said at a recent school board meeting. "This is something that we can control that would have a serious impact," another school board meeting attendee said. The district's finance director says that they're already running a $1.2 million budget deficit this year, and they've got several expensive maintenance projects to tackle over the next several years. He thinks consolidating the buildings could save the district up to $2.8 million.

Austin ISD to decide on school consolidation, repurposing ahead of next school year

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin ISD is expected to decide on some changes for the upcoming school year during a virtual meeting Thursday. The district said it planned on consolidating schools beginning in the 2026–27 school year, which could include school closures, boundary changes and more. The purpose of the effort was to 'avoid deeper budget cuts and safeguard the academic experience,' according to the district. AISD is also set to discuss how to repurpose one campus that has already been closed. The district said it planned to create a green space at the site of former Sims Elementary, which was closed in 2021. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent to present updated study on proposed school closures, reconfigurations

Parents, students, and staff members among Pittsburgh Public Schools will hear an updated plan this evening that could have a big impact on the district's future. Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters will present an updated feasibility report to the public on the future of the district, which comes after the district postponed a vote in late March, wanting more details. Some of the details expected to be on the agenda tonight include a more detailed look at the financial impact, the future of transportation, investment needs, and how all of the changes support student learning. School board members told KDKA they believed that information would be vital for them to move forward on a consolidation plan and vote. The process goes back more than a year now as the district looked to find ways to save money and make better use of resources amid declining enrollment. The proposed plan includes closing more than a dozen schools, reconfiguring the grade structures at 12 schools, and finding alternative uses for existing facilities to open three new schools. The presentation will be streamed live on the district's Facebook and YouTube pages starting at 6 p.m. this evening.
