Play together, stay together - A lovers' guide to sex toys

South Africans increasingly embrace sex toys in their relationships. Sexual wellness connects to physical fitness and improving intimacy. Communication and gradual exploration vital for couples' success. ____________________________________________________ South African couples are strengthening bonds while boosting their pleasure potential. Gym isn't the only place where you can get your heart racing and work up a sweat. For many couples, the bedroom is becoming the new fitness studio – with sex toys as essential equipment for relationship workouts. The rising tide of pleasure positivity If you've been hesitant to bring up the topic of sex toys with your partner, you're not alone. Despite South Africa's growing acceptance of sexual wellness products, with over 76 percent using sex toys according to recent research, many couples still find it challenging to have that first conversation. 'The stigma around sexuality in South Africa is still significant,' says Johannesburg based sex therapist Dr Nomsa Mbeki. 'But we're seeing a positive shift as more couples understand that sexual wellness is an important part of overall health – just like regular exercise.' This shift is evident in shopping trends, with over 42 percent of South Africans now purchasing sex toys online rather than from physical stores, appreciating the privacy and convenience of discreet delivery. The fitness connection What many don't realise is the powerful connection between physical fitness and sexual wellness. Kegels aren't just exercises you do at the gym – they're essential for strengthening pelvic floor muscles, which directly impact sexual pleasure and performance. 'Regular exercise creates a positive feedback loop for intimate relationships,' explains Cape Town fitness trainer Sipho Nkosi. 'When you exercise, you release endorphins, improve blood circulation, boost stamina, and enhance body confidence – all essential ingredients for a satisfying sex life.' Sex toys can be viewed as specialised fitness equipment for this intimate workout: Author: Nomvula Johnson is a certified relationship coach and fitness instructor specialising in holistic wellness approaches for couples across South Africa.
