Forget polka dots - this is the print all chic French women are wearing this summer
There's one print quietly edging its way into every cool French woman's wardrobe this summer, and you might be surprised to learn it's not polka dots or florals. In fact, it's something altogether more unexpected: gingham. Yes, the timeless check is having a moment. Think less Dorothy in Kansas and more Françoise Hardy on the French Riviera.
From slouchy trousers to elegant sundresses, gingham has shaken off its picnic blanket past and gone très sophistiqué. The key? Opting for elevated cuts, muted colourways (rust, black, green) and just the right amount of ruffle. Whether it's a black-checked shirt tucked into wide-leg trousers for weekday errands, or a puff-sleeve dress and espadrilles combo that whispers 'Provence, but make it fashion'.
Of course, no one wears gingham quite like les Parisiennes: effortless, unfussy, and always with a flat shoe. Try a midi dress with a cinched waist (like the below Albaray number) worn under a slouchy cardigan, or relaxed trousers (Nobody's Child's pair are perfectly slouchy) styled with a white tank and chunky gold jewellery. This is gingham for grown-ups.
Not sure where to start? A breezy blouse (Gap's version is perfect) tucked into denim is a foolproof formula. Or go full French-girl fantasy with a puffed-sleeve jumpsuit from Anthropologie and oversized shades.
We'd suggest keeping the accessories simple: a raffia tote, barely-there sandals, and just a swipe of red lipstick. Because, after all, the ultimate French style secret is this: less is always more.
