Laketown Township considers plans for new stairs at beach
LAKETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission is figuring out how to replace dilapidated stairs that were removed from the beach last month. The 32-year-old wooden stairs that led from Lake Michigan up a dune at Laketown Township Beach are officially disassembled and debris is expected to be completely removed by Friday. The parks and recreation commission is deciding what comes next. At a special commission meeting Tuesday, an architect for an engineering firm presented members with two options to add new stairs. Each would install 220 feet of 5-foot-wide wooden stairs with railings north of where the old steps were. With proper maintenance, each would last about 20-30 years, the architect said. It consists of a basically straight line down the dune with nine landings. The price was estimated at $247,835, including the removal of old snow fence; installation of more fencing and planting of dune grass, shrubs and trees. The section option 'zigzags through the dune with resting and viewing balconies and branches,' Laketown Township wrote in a Wednesday release. That is priced at $291,585 including removal of old fence, addition of new fence and plantings. The township's remaining funds budgeted for capital improvements add up to $115,000, which may be available to use if the board of trustees OKs it, according to Steven Ringelberg, interim township manager. The commission asked Ringelberg to have staff put up signs to warn people about how difficult it may be to get up the dune without stairs. The township is also looking into getting Wi-Fi on the beach in case beachgoers need to call for help. The stairs were shut down in March after the Parks and Recreation Commission voted to remove them, citing safety concerns. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
