Teenager leaps to death from busy NYC ferry after leaving haunting final message for family

A New York City teenager leaped to his death off the side of the Staten Island Ferry after leaving a haunting final message to his family. Brandon Pino, 17, of Staten Island, was spotted jumping off the busy ferry around 9:45am on Saturday as the boat was approaching Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan. A witness told the ferry crew about the teen's leap after it docked in Manhattan. The Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School senior had visited his uncle around 7am before taking the 9:30am ferry from St. George Ferry Terminal to Manhattan, his sister, Cathleen Pino, 27, told The New York Daily News. The suicide attempt came after Brandon posted on Instagram, announcing to his followers that it was 'my last day on earth.' 'And then he also made a post about mental health awareness. Hashtag mental health awareness,' the distraught mother said. The young teen was also texting a group of friends prior to jumping overboard, worrying them. 'In one of those messages he wishes his friends a farewell, telling them to stay true to themselves and that he loves them,' Cathleen said. 'And then he sent a picture that he was on the ferry, on the outer part of the ferry, looking towards the water.' Police called for a search for Brandon, but the search ended around 6pm on Saturday. Despite that, the family has continued to search for the student. 'We're doing our own search with family members,' she told the outlet. 'We are going along Jersey City, Battery Park, Brooklyn, just looking around the borders. 'We've gone on Governors Island yesterday [Sunday] and we're doing it again today [Monday].' The family is hoping to at least find Brandon's body to allow his mother to have a proper burial for her son. 'We want help to see if there can be more attention, so to see if they can actually do at least a recovery, for my mom to get some type of closure,' she shared. The family has contacted local hospital in hopes of learning Brandon survived the jump after a radio transmission stated 'he was swimming' after the fall, according to the Staten Island Advance. Prior to Saturday, Brandon had been acting normally and even seemed happier than usual, Cathleen told The Daily News. 'It seems very odd because he was being himself, which was eating, cooking for himself, cooking his healthy food, going to the gym, going to school early, being there for his graduation practice,' she said. 'His friends told me that they had seen that he was more happy than usual at school lately.' However, like many teens, Brandon worried about his body and had told friends he felt pressure to 'be a certain weight or look a specific way,' Cathleen said. has reached out the Pino family and NYPD for comment. A day before, a 15-year-old girl who was not identified allegedly jumped into the East River near Roosevelt Island, vanishing around lunchtime, according to NBC New York. She was last seen wearing a floral bathing suit while sitting on rocks near the water, The Daily News reported. Officers found a bag with books, a jacket, and sneakers near the water that they believe belonged to the girl. Both teens remain missing as of Tuesday morning.

Jersey businesses team up with mental health charity

Two business organisations in Jersey have teamed up with a mental health charity to address workplace mental health issues. The Jersey Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Directors (IoD) are working with the Mind Jersey charity to support staff. The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Lee Madden, said that by "investing in training and raising awareness" he hoped "that all members are equipped to recognise and respond to mental health concerns or suicidal thoughts". The training included suicide awareness, mental health awareness and first aid for mental health accredited courses. The initiative offers members of both organisations, 50% off the cost of training with the charity. Mind Jersey is also inviting all HR managers who are members of the IoD or whose employer is a member of the Chamber of Commerce to a free mental health awareness session in Madden said he had lost colleagues and recognised that as a business leader he had a responsibility for the "well-being of colleagues and employees". Alex Ruddy, chair of the Institute of Directors said that she hopes that "members from both organisations avail themselves of the training".

Glamorous mommy influencer makes first cryptic post after her husband killed himself at their Hamptons home amid $35 million debt

Mommy blogger Candice Miller has returned to social media almost a year after her husband took his own life at their $12million Hamptons mansion while drowning in debt. The glamorous mother-of-two shared a cryptic quote to her Mama and Tata Instagram page on Monday evening, accompanied by a picture of a sun peaking through clouds over the water. 'In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer,' the caption read. 'And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there's something stronger – something better, pushing right back.' The cryptic statement was a quote from French philosopher and writer Albert Camus. Miller's triumphant return to social media was met with a barrage of supportive messages from her loyal fans who have been patiently waiting for 11 months for her to end her self-imposed exile. Back on the 4th of July weekend of 2024, the illusion of the glamorous life she led was shattered when her husband Brandon Miller's body was found inside his Porsche in the garage of the family home. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning while Miller and her two children were holidaying at a $2,000-per-night resort on Italy's Amalfi Coast, and his death was ultimately declared a suicide. Brandon died owing $33.6million, leaving just $8,000 in the bank. It was a far cry from the life Miller portrayed on social media, brimming with glittering parties, private plane trips and luxury cars. The 'Mama and Tata' page, which was also a lifestyle brand, frequently featured lavish displays of wealth like $800 facials and celebrity workout classes, helping her to amass a loyal following of aspirational viewers. She has always maintained that she wasn't aware of her husband's finances or business dealings. Brandon ensured his family would still be taken care of despite his debts, taking out life insurance policies worth $15million which were paid out after his death. But some of that money could be swept up in legal fees and repayments as Miller works with lawyers to determine what debts she is on the hook for. She was sued for $194,881 in unpaid rent from the Park Avenue apartment in New York where she and her family had lived since 2021, but argued that she did not owe any money given she did not personally sign the lease. It's understood shortly after Brandon's death, Miller agreed to pay about $4million to settle a lawsuit over a separate loan. In all, her husband had taken out an estimated $20million in unsecured loans, the New York Times reported at the time. She sold the family home in the Hamptons in December 2024 for $12.8million The home reportedly had five mortgages taken out on it, totaling nearly $12million. After the sale, she and her two daughters began a new life in Miami, living in a $10million condominium overlooking the ocean which has been loaned to her by her friend, Alexander von Furstenberg, son of fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. Far from hiding out and wallowing in misery, sources told Page Six she appeared to be thriving in the Miami scene. 'She's weirdly okay,' another socialite said. 'She's at parties and events and dinners. She's not sitting at home wearing all black with the lights off or anything. 'She's not shopping at Chanel every day. But, day to day, she is living life. She's residing in an expensive apartment that's been loaned to her by friends, She's going to dinners and places like the Four Seasons Surf Club and Casa Tua, working out, and traveling. 'Obviously, everything's changed. But, from what we see, it doesn't feel like anything's changed. She's not super laying low. That's for sure.' Miller's return to social media appears to be the next step in her bid to return to some sense of normalcy. 'I'm a stranger to you but I pray for you and your girls often,' one fan said. 'So happy you're back,' another added.

Teen posted Instagram farewell before leaping from Staten Island Ferry: family

A 17-year-old high school senior left a goodbye note on Instagram and said farewell to his friends via group text before jumping off the Staten Island Ferry, his distraught sister said Sunday. The NYPD has been searching the waters of New York harbor for Brandon Pino since he jumped about 9:45 a.m. on Saturday as the ferry approached the southern tip of Manhattan, cops said. Brandon's sister Cathleen Pino reached out to the Daily News because her family hopes public attention will lead to her sibling's recovery. 'We're doing our own search with family members. We are going along Jersey City, Battery Park, Brooklyn, just looking around the borders,' said Cathleen, adding that she hasn't gotten any updates from authorities. 'We've gone on Governors Island yesterday and we're doing it again today.' Brandon, a senior at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School on Staten Island, went to his uncle's house on Staten Island about 7 a.m. on Saturday, then headed for the 9:30 a.m. boat from the St. George Ferry Terminal, not telling anyone, his sister said. 'He had posted on his Instagram,' she said. 'It was saying, 'My last day on Earth.' And then he also made a post about mental health awareness. Hashtag mental health awareness,' his sister said. He was texting a group of friends, who started getting increasingly worried, just before he jumped overboard, she said. A witness notified the ferry crew after it docked in Manhattan, she said. Police searched the waters, but called off the search at about 6 p.m., the sister said. Brandon lived with his mom and two older sisters in Port Richmond, and his nieces and nephews looked up to him because of his commitment to fitness. 'His friends told me that they had seen that he was more happy than usual at school lately,' Cathleen said. 'And it seems very odd because he was being himself, which was eating, cooking for himself, cooking his healthy food, going to the gym, going to school early, being there for his graduation practice.' Still, she said, his friends said he'd express worries about his body, 'to be a certain weight or look a specific way.' One of his classmates had recently died by suicide, she added. 'We want help to see if there can be more attention, so to see if they can actually do at least a recovery, for my mom to get some type of closure, so she can bury her son,' she said.

The first ever 'Ride the Runway for Mental Health' event was held at London International Airport in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The family-friendly event was put together by Doug Harris and his family in honour of his late daughter Kate, who died by suicide after struggling with mental health for years. 'My daughter Kate was a beautiful, bubbly, 32-year-old member of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Halifax. On the surface, nobody would have imagined that she was suffering internally with mental health issues,' said Kate's father, Doug Harris. 053125_For The Love of Kate I Ride the runway London airport Classic cars on display at the Ride the Runway event at London International Airport, May 31, 2025 (Reta Ismail/CTV News London) Dozens of people gathered to take part, by riding their bikes, walking, or running around a section of the runway at the London International Airport near the Jet Aircraft Museum. Several classic cars were also showcased on the runway. 'Events like this are so important, because in addition to the money raised, it also spreads more awareness of the types of help that are available to people,' said Kelly Morgan, Events Manager & Communications at CMHA. Since her passing in 2016, Kate's family has been active in spreading awareness and raising funds for mental health. In 2019, Kate's father Doug cycled over 2,200 kms from London, Ontario (Kate's birthplace) to Halifax, NS (where Kate lived and died), raising over $25,000 in support of London Ontario's St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation. 'We didn't want her death to be in vain, we wanted to help other people. She helped other people, she just couldn't get the help herself,' said Brenda Harris. 053125_For The Love of Kate I Ride the runway London airport A poster for 'Ride the Runway' in London Ont., May 31, 2025 (Source: For The Love of Kate I Ride) Kate's brother, Will Harris says it's important to shine a light on mental health and end the stigma.
