CCSU President targeted with ‘suspicious letter'

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — A suspicious letter, that released an unknown substance when it was opened, was sent to the home of the Central Connecticut State University President Friday night. Zulma Toro, who began her tenure at CCSU in 2017, said she opened a letter that was addressed to her, with no return address, and an unknown substance was released. Toro said she immediately called the authorities and was medically examined on-scene. It was determined that Toro did not need to seek more medical care at a local hospital. 'I am not physically hurt. My resolve to be a leader for our university has also not been weakened by a cruel incident,' Toro said in a statement to the CCSU community. The university will be working with local, state and federal law enforcement to resolve the incident. Toro said, 'In the meantime, what I would like to say is thank you, to the public safety personnel and staff at Central who supported me. Thank you to the first responders who handled a frightening situation with professionalism and care. Thank you to all the members of the Central family, CSCU team, Board of Regents and the community who have reached out by phone and email, to send messages of encouragement. While I can't control everything that comes my way, I can control how I respond to them.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
