Godolphin and Latymer deputy head teacher had sex with pupil in cupboard

A married deputy headmaster who had oral sex in his office with a pupil has been banned from the profession. Phil Culling, now 52, was director of music at Godolphin and Latymer school in west London when he began a sexual relationship with a 'vulnerable' schoolgirl more than a decade ago. He engaged in sexual acts with the pupil in a cupboard in his office at the school, where fees cost £33,000 a year. Mr Culling was allowed to quietly resign in 2014 without facing a disciplinary hearing, avoiding any kind of sanction and enabling him to continue working in education. In 2016, he returned to work at Holland Park Pre-Prep and Nursery – an exclusive school only a mile from his previous post. It was not until June 2022, eight years after his resignation, that a whistleblower came forward, triggering an investigation into his past. Mr Culling received the life-time ban in a ruling by the Teaching Regulatory Agency. 'Exploited his position' The agency found that between July 2013 and July 2014, Mr Culling 'exploited his position to advance a sexual relationship with a vulnerable pupil'. The pair exchanged text messages and emails, after he acquired her phone number from school records, which Mr Culling told the pupil to delete once she had read them. The panel found that he kissed her for the first time in February 2013, took her to a public house on her birthday during the school lunch hour and declared to her that she was the 'love of my life' in a good luck message ahead of her A-levels in June 2013. The pupil, known as Person B in the report, said she had oral sex with the former teacher in his office cupboard early in the morning on several occasions in 2013. The report read: 'Person B spoke of the shame she felt regarding their relationship and this pervaded her evidence. 'This included when she recalled engaging in oral sex in a cupboard in Mr Culling's office and a member of the catering staff had come in and had not been aware that they were there. 'She spoke of feeling morally conflicted by their relationship and having to conceal it.' A child protection officer In June 2013, on the night of the school's leavers' reception, Mr Culling had sex with the girl in a public park, which the panel heard was 'the first time she had ever had sexual intercourse'. That summer, Mr Culling went to the former pupil's home once a week when her mother was out and they would have sex. In August 2013, after the pupil had moved into a flat, the couple engaged in 'a lot of sexual acts including touching and oral sex happened in very public areas', the panel heard. It was not disclosed when their relationship ended. Jo Palmer-Tweed, the panel's chairman, said: 'Mr Culling was a child protection officer at the school and as such had appropriate training in safeguarding. 'Despite this, he took advantage of the position of trust he was in towards a vulnerable child for his own gratification.' In 2014, when the affair first came to light, Godolphin did not contact police or teaching authorities because they incorrectly believed the relationship did not start until after the pupil had left the school. In January 2023, Mr Culling told her not to engage with the regulator's proceedings. 'Mr Culling sought to conceal the extent of the relationship with [the student] during the school's investigation and coerced Person B into lying for him,' the panel found. 'This continued by Mr Culling seeking to coerce Person B into not giving evidence in these proceedings, with the objective of frustrating the process.'

Woman teacher at Grays school banned for sexual messages to pupil

A woman has been banned from teaching after a panel found she sent messages about her sexual encounters to a pupil and encouraged him to smoke cannabis with Doman, then 32, was teaching history at William Edwards secondary school in Grays, Essex, when her inappropriate contact began.A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel was told she sent messages to the pupil where she called him "little duck" and said to him she loved him, but she denied what she said was Cavey, TRA chief executive, decided she should be banned from teaching indefinitely, subject to a five-year review period. The TRA heard Ms Doman sent dozens of messages to the child, who the panel referred to as Pupil A, between April and May one she said: "You're not even legal or an adult or anything. Like, am I taking advantage of you? Some days it feels like you're taking advantage of me lol."In messages seen by the panel, she told him: "YOU have all the control in this relationship."She also told Pupil A details about her sexual relationships, the panel found, saying in an Instagram message: "One night I ended up with three different guys." 'Pull sickies' She was said to have made comments about the pupil's appearance and messaged him, saying: "I literally go get waxed every eight weeks for no-one to appreciate it."The panel also heard Ms Doman encouraged Pupil A and his friends to "pull sickies" on a day she was off school, and at least once invited Pupil A to spend time alone with now 34-year-old did not attend her misconduct hearing, but in written statements said the "little duck" nickname was "not romantic".She said she was letting the pupil "know that someone cared about his existence" in telling him she loved Doman admitted she also encouraged Pupil A to drink alcohol and smoke cannabis with her, and said: "I am unsure why any of this occurred."I certainly don't behave like this myself. I drink alcohol less than once a month and never to excess, and I've never taken drugs."The teacher also admitted she had sent Pupil A messages outside of school hours and acknowledged she told him to "remove all trace" of her from his Doman denied her conduct was sexually motivated and said she saw Pupil A as "like her child", but the panel ruled on the said Ms Doman's behaviour had a "seriously damaging" impact on Pupil A, his parents, the school and its wider community, and her conduct "had the potential to influence Pupil A in a harmful way".Ms Doman was facing "difficulties" in her personal life at the time, the hearing was told, but the panel ruled that she "did not show sufficient insight in respect of the impact her conduct had on others". Keighley teacher banned after driving and knife offences

A teacher who was convicted of drink driving and carrying two large kitchen knives in her bag has been banned from the profession. Lauren Jenkins, 39, who taught at Merlin Top Primary School in Keighley, pleaded guilty to both offences between March and September 2022 but failed to notify the school. After a professional conduct hearing, it was found that even though her crimes were committed outside school, her actions "demonstrated a lack of integrity" that could bring the profession into disrepute. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel ruled that Ms Jenkins actions amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and she was prohibited from teaching indefinitely. The panel heard that in February 2022 Ms Jenkins was seen driving into a car park by an off-duty police officer, who believed she may have been drunk. He called 999 and Ms Jenkins was was found to be three times over the legal limit for driving. She was subsequently banned from driving for two years, given a 12-month community order and fined £180. Then, in August of the same year, Ms Jenkins was arrested for possessing a bladed article after police were called to a disturbance where she had become involved in a fight while drunk. Officers found two large kitchen knives in her bag, which were not brandished during the incident. Ms Jenkins admitted the charges and was later sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months and fined £ panel also heard Ms Jenkins had phoned a colleague and told him she had "done something silly" and been caught drink driving, but before the school could finish an internal investigation she resigned on 21 October 2022. 'No insight' It was found Ms Jenkins, who had worked at the school since 2009, violated the school's "outside of work" code of conduct and failed in her duty to disclose the "change in her circumstances". The TRA said Ms Jenkins' actions were not in keeping with "fundamental British values" and could potentially "affect public confidence in the teaching profession". While she had been described as a "fantastic" teacher by staff, it was found she showed "no evidence of remorse or insight" about her conduct. TRA decision maker Sarah Buxcey said: "The findings of misconduct are particularly serious as they include a finding which involved offences which placed the public at a risk of harm, and conduct found to be dishonest and that lacked integrity." Teacher banned after sex assaults in mid-1990s

A former private school teacher has been banned from the profession after he was convicted of sexual offences against a girl pupil, a disciplinary panel has ruled. Neil Butler was working at Orwell Park School, near Ipswich, when allegations of sexual abuse from about 30 years ago were made in 2021. A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel, which met in April, said the 59-year-old science teacher worked at Rose Hill prep school in Gloucestershire at the time of the offences in the mid-1990s. The TRA report stated: "Mr Butler's behaviour ultimately led to a sentence of imprisonment, (albeit that it was suspended), which was indicative of the seriousness of the offences." The report said Butler was found guilty at Gloucester Crown Court of one count of gross indecency with a girl under 14 years old and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14 years old "in and around 2024". He received a two-year jail sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years and to pay £10,000 in compensation, the panel heard. It was in October 2021 that the victim reported the offences which took place when she was a pupil at Rose Hill, a private boarding school in Alderly in the Cotswolds, which has since closed. At that time, Butler was working at Orwell Park, in Nacton, but he left there in July 2022 "in light of the criminal allegations against him". The TRA said: "The panel noted that these actions relate to activity on a school trip and on the school premises." Butler was "prohibited from teaching indefinitely" and cannot teach in any school, relevant youth accommodation or children's home. He was also not entitled to apply for restoration of his eligibility to teach due to the seriousness of the allegations. Follow Suffolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
