Bursa ends flat as selling in telco stocks offsets late gains in banks
KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — Bursa Malaysia closed flat today with the key index down slightly, weighed by selling in telecommunication counters. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) dipped 1.08 points, or 0.07 per cent, to 1,534.30 from Friday's close of 1,535.38. The benchmark index opened 0.95 of a point higher at 1,536.33, and fluctuated between 1,528.93 and 1,537.27 throughout the day. In the broader market, decliners thumped gainers 595 to 338, with 478 counters unchanged, 1,019 untraded and 42 suspended. Turnover improved to 3.12 billion units worth RM1.63 billion compared with Friday's 2.72 billion units worth RM2.17 billion. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the FBM KLCI trimmed earlier losses on the back of late buying interest, especially in banking counters. 'Markets across the region saw mixed results following US President Donald Trump's tariff rhetoric over the weekend, where he first threatened and later walked back on plans for increased European tariffs. Meanwhile, technology stocks came under selling pressure after Trump floated a 25 per cent tariff on iPhones and other smartphone imports,' he told Bernama. Thong said the benchmark index of the local bourse remains range-bound amid a lack of catalysts. 'A decisive move above the 1,550-1,560 level is necessary to shift sentiment positively. For now, we expect the FBM KLCI to trade between 1,520 and 1,550 through the week,' he added. Among heavyweight stocks, Maybank rose four sen to RM9.92, while Public Bank and IHH Healthcare added one sen each to RM4.41 and RM6.91, respectively. CIMB gained two sen to RM6.96, while Tenaga was flat at RM14. Among active stocks, Sapura Energy, OCR Group and Harvest Miracle were unchanged at four sen, 3.5 sen and 18 sen, respectively, while Tanco Holdings added 2.5 sen to RM1 and Eco Shop fell four sen to RM1.16. — Bernama

Telegram 'surprised' as Vietnam orders messaging app to be blocked
Vietnam's technology ministry has ordered telecommunication service providers to block the messaging app Telegram for not cooperating in combating alleged crimes committed by its users, in a move that Telegram said was surprising. In a document, dated May 21 and signed by the deputy head of the telecom department at the technology ministry, telecommunication companies were ordered to take measures to block Telegram and report on them to the ministry by June 2. The ministry was acting on behalf of the country's cybersecurity department after police reported that 68 per cent of the 9,600 Telegram channels and groups in Vietnam violated the law, citing fraud, drug trafficking and "cases suspected of being related to terrorism" among the illegal activities carried out through the app, the document seen by Reuters said. The ministry asked telecommunication service providers "to deploy solutions and measures to prevent Telegram's activities in Vietnam," the document said. After publication of the Reuters article, the government confirmed the measures against Telegram on its web portal. 'We are processing the request': Telegram representative "Telegram is surprised by those statements," a company representative told Reuters on Friday. "We have responded to legal requests from Vietnam on time. This morning, we received a formal notice from the Authority of Communications regarding a standard service notification procedure required under new telecom regulations. The deadline for the response is May 27, and we are processing the request," the Telegram representative said. A technology ministry official said the move followed Telegram's failure to share user data with the government when asked as part of criminal investigations. The Vietnamese police and state news outlets have repeatedly warned people of possible crime, frauds and data breaches on Telegram channels and groups. Telegram, which competes globally with other social media apps such as Facebook's WhatsApp and WeChat, was still available in Vietnam on Friday. Vietnam's ruling Communist Party maintains tight media censorship and tolerates little dissent. The country has repeatedly asked companies like Facebook, Google's YouTube and TikTok to coordinate with authorities to stamp out content deemed "toxic," including offensive, false and anti-state content. Telegram is accused of not applying laws that require social media to monitor, remove and block information that violate the law, according to the document. Also, the document said that according to information from the police, "many groups with tens of thousands of participants were created by opposition and reactionary subjects spreading anti-government documents." The free-to-use platform with close to 1 billion users worldwide has been involved in controversies across the world on security and data breach concerns, including in France where its founder, Pavel Durov, was briefly detained last year. French President Emmanuel Macron is set to visit Vietnam from Sunday.

Spectrum, Google Fiber lines vandalized in Kansas City as part of rising trend
Law enforcement is investigating several incidents of vandalism to Spectrum and Google Fiber lines in the Kansas City area over the last week., part of a recent trend of vandalism to network infrastructure across the country. Three Spectrum fiber optic lines were cut in the KC area Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the company. Restoration to the lines began Saturday and was completed early Sunday morning. Spectrum is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Those with information may call the Spectrum tip line at 833-404-8477. Google Fiber lines in the area were also purposely cut, and a police report was filed, a company representative said. In a statement, Andy Simpson, the general manager for Google Fiber's central region, pointed to 'strong evidence of vandalism.' Kansas City and Kansas City, Kansas, police said they are investigating the Spectrum vandalism. The FBI office in Kansas City is aware of the matter and remains in contact with local law enforcement, authorities said. In the metro, vandalism to network infrastructure has grown over the last nine months. There is not a concrete motive as to why vandals choose to damage telecommunication lines, officials said. Historically, there has been a copper angle to these acts of vandalism. Vandals take sections of copper from these lines to resell. However, fiber optic lines do not contain copper and instead use thin strands of glass to transmit signals. The incidents come as part of what The Internet & Television Association, an industry lobbying group, said was a wave of vandalism to network infrastructure across the country. A report released by the group last year said there had been 5,770 intentional incidents of theft and vandalism between June and December 2024. The report noted 305 incidents in Missouri and 22 in Kansas during that period. The group pointed to the rising value of copper as a factor, even in incidents where there is no copper. 'In the indiscriminate search for copper, even modern communications facilities, such as fiber-optic transmission lines and wireless communications towers that have no copper, have been sabotaged,' the report said. 'These incidents of theft and vandalism have become increasingly common and create unnecessary service disruptions that threaten and harm American citizens, consumers and businesses.' Simpson says that Google Fiber hopes the public engages in 'see something, say something' if they see someone tampering with telecommunication lines. 'If people do see — folks out that don't seem like their utility workers or otherwise — that's important to us is that people speak up when they see something,' he said. 'Getting our customers back up is the most important kind of aspect of managing and maintaining our network and providing the service, and so that's what we focus on is how quickly can we respond and get crews and teams on site to fix the outage and repair it,' Simpson said. He went on to say that, when incidents happen, the goal is to get connections to customers back up 'in the shortest amount of time possible.' The Star's Nathan Pilling contributed reporting.
