Daniel Karmann/dpa Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen dismissed reports that his Barcelona team have plans to sell him this summer. "Nobody has spoken to me. I know that I will be in Barcelona next year," he told reporters on Sunday at Germany's Nations League training camp in Herzogenaurach. Advertisement Ter Stegen has a contract with the Spanish club until 2028. This season, he played only nine games for the team due to a serious knee injury, but he doesn't believe his situation at the club has changed. "We've always had great goalkeepers in previous years too. There's competition in every position at Barcelona. I'm really looking forward to the new season, because we have a great team that's young, dynamic and hungry," he said. According to media reports, Bacerlona president Joan Laporta had given coach Hansi Flick permission to sell the goalkeeper. Ter Stegen said he has had no contact with Flick since the reports came out. Advertisement "We haven't talked and haven't been in touch in the past days. I don't see why either? There's no situation to be talked about," he said. Ter Stegen hasn't played for Germany since September, but coach Julian Nagelsmann said he will be in the starting line-up on Wednesday in the Nations League semi-finals against Portugal.

FC Barcelona Star Ter Stegen Addresses Departure

FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has addressed a potential departure from the club ... More while on international duty for Germany, defiantly stating "I know I'll be at Barca next year" at a press conference on Sunday. FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has addressed a potential departure from the club while on international duty for Germany, defiantly stating 'I know I'll be at Barca next year' at a press conference on Sunday. At the end of a week where Mundo Deportivo reported that Barca has agreed terms with Espanyol's Joan Garcia, and also relayed that Hansi Flick is in line with a previous claim from RAC1 that detailed President Joan Laporta telling the board the German will have to move on if the Spaniard arrives, Ter Stegen was asked about his future. 'No one has told me about this, so I don't know the situation,' Ter Stegen stated, about possibly being moved on. 'I'm not worried. I know that I will be at Barcelona next year,' added the shotstopper, who has a contract until June 30, 2028. 'If I remember correctly, and if no news has happened in the last few hours, we only have two goalkeepers for next season, Iñaki [Pena] and me,' Ter Stegen said, while ignoring Wojciech 'Tek' Szczesny, who has not yet renewed his one-year contract but is expected to. 'So, basically, we have competition for this position, and it's between Iñaki and me, and whoever comes in, always has to, no matter what, deal with this competition: any player, in any position, has to deal with that. The same thing happened in recent years, as we had great goalkeepers, who also came with big ambitions. And that's how it should be.' Ter Stegen accepted that at a club like Barca, 'we always want to sign the best players'. 'This is our goal. Whether in the goalkeeper position or in any other position, for us there is no difference. For my part, it's always the same: I always want to give my best, I always want to be on the pitch and I'll do everything I can to achieve that in the future as well. I think while I was playing, I was always doing well the last few years,' the veteran further offered. FC Barcelona must decide what to do with Ter Stegen if it signs Garcia, while also considering the futures of 'Tek', Inaki Pena, and not disrupting American promise Diego Kochen's progress.

Barcelona to consider replacing Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer

Barcelona have had three different goalkeepers this season, and none of them have convinced the club that they are definitively the long-term answer to the position. After Marc-Andre ter Stegen went down with injury in September, Inaki Pena took over as number one, seeing himself replaced by Wojciech Szczesny in January. Flick has spoken highly of Szczesny and ter Stegen in recent months, but Barcelona have their doubts about them, say Diario AS. Szczesny recently declared he was still undecided about the club's two-year renewal offer, but the plan is for him to be the back-up next season, but the number one spot is a major point of debate internally. Marc-Andre ter Stegen's future in doubt at Barcelona The same outlet go on to say that doubts exist about ter Stegen's level. Following three surgeries in four years on his right knee, ter Stegen's fitness has been an issue in recent seasons, and his form has declined from being one of the best in the world. The German goalkeeper has had an approach from Saudi Arabia of late, but intends to continue in Barcelona, where he has a contract until 2028. What Barcelona do not know, is how he would respond should the club go after a new goalkeeper that could challenge his starting place. Ter Stegen is club captain, but at the age of 33, probably still feels he has some years left at the top level. Barcelona keen on Joan Garcia crossing the divide Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Bournemouth, Bayer Leverkusen, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are amongst the list of clubs interested in Joan Garcia, as are Barcelona. The Espanyol goalkeeper has a €25m release clause (with a €5m rise if he is called up by Spain), and is set to move on this summer. Image via Cordon Press The Blaugrana would like to sign him, but acknowledge that both the release clause (Espanyol will not negotiate with their city rivals) and the morbo between the two sides make a move difficult. Money to be decisive for Barcelona? Perhaps the defining factor will be money. It is not yet clear if Barcelona can register Garcia, which would require €25m at least up front, rather than in instalments. In addition, it could become something of a headache financially (as well as in the dressing room) if ter Stegen stays to fight for his place on high wages. That said, Garcia is a unique opportunity at his price point.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen now has target for return from injury

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen now has target for return from injury On Monday there was a fresh but old face in training at the Ciutat Esportiva, as Barcelona club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen was in action. His recovery from a knee injury in September continues to progress at an excellent pace. Advertisement Brazilian forward Raphinha exercised as normal say Sport, and he is expected to be fit for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night for the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash at the Metropolitano. As explained by MD, ter Stegen also did part of the training session with the rest of the group for the first time since his injury. Photo by Getty Images The Catalan paper explain that targets are beginning to come into focus for the 32-year-old shot-stopper, and that he hopes to be fit to play again towards the end of April. Whether he gets the medical green light is not yet clear, but that is what he is working towards. It remains equally uncertain as to whether ter Stegen will return to action this season. Previous reports have stated that Hansi Flick intends to continue with Wojciech Szczesny as the number one for the rest of the season. He is keen to give ter Stegen one or two games towards the end of the year, but with the Blaugrana involved in a title race that could go down to the wire, there is a good chance that no obvious opportunity to do so presents itself. In Europe too, registering ter Stegen after his injury would require unregistering Szczesny, something that Flick has no intention of doing. The Polish goalkeeper also looks set to compete with ter Stegen for the number one spot next season too, with a new contract on the horizon for the 34-year-old. On the flipside, Inaki Pena is primed to depart the club in the summer.

Hansi Flick has plan for goalkeeping position at Barcelona as Marc-Andre ter Stegen return nears

Strangely, the position that has been most uncertain over the course of the season at Barcelona has been the goalkeeping spot. Their plans were thrown into disarray after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury in September, and Hansi Flick has had three different number ones at various points. After ter Stegen's injury, Barcelona persuaded Wojciech Szczesny to come out of retirement and sign a one-year deal until the end of the season, but Flick maintained faith in back-up goalkeeper Inaki Pena. That faith lasted until Christmas, when Szczesny began starting in cup competitions, and then took over as number one in La Liga – Barcelona have not lost since. Jonathan Tah is waiting for clarity from Barcelona. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are positioning themselves to make him a proposal. @RogerTorello — barcacentre (@barcacentre) March 24, 2025 The Polish veteran, 34, is happy at the club, and is set to extend his contract by a year. Sport say that it could even include an option to extend the deal by a further season, in which case Szczesny would be on board until 2027. With ter Stegen now in the final stretch of his recovery though, another decision will be forced upon Flick: to return his captain to the starting line-up, or to stick with Szczesny? Ter Stegen is seemingly set on 'doing a Courtois', referencing his Real Madrid counterpart's recovery from a cruciate ligament injury last season, which culminated in the Belgian starting the Champions League semi-finals and final. However the same outlet maintain that if ter Stegen goes get back to fitness, he will be given game time as a reward for his recovery. However the plan is for Szczesny to play out the season as the undisputed starter in goal. For ter Stegen to play in Europe, Barcelona would have to unregister Szczesny and would not be able to bring him back into the fold. Thus Flick would have to have a faith in ter Stegen based entirely on one or two games in domestic action, throwing him into the highest pressure situation. The German goalkeeper looks set to resume full training at some point in April if his recovery continues at the same pace.
