Dozens of Scouts lay 6,000 flags across graves of United States Veterans in Appleton ahead of Memorial Day
APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Ahead of Memorial Day, local Scouts gathered in Appleton to lay American Flags across thousands of veterans' graves. Over 50 Scouts helped during the process, as about 6,000 United States flags were laid in memory of those who paid the ultimate price. Corvettes of the Bay honors fallen heroes ahead of Memorial Day The event was held at the Appleton Highland Memorial Park Cemetery from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26, as the nation pays homage to the sacrifice of those who served. Are L.A. County's Beaches Safe?
A new report from nonprofit group Heal the Bay is warning Angelenos of significant health concerns for both people and marine life along the Los Angeles County coastline in the aftermath of January's deadly and devastating wildfires. "At this time, Heal the Bay recommends avoiding beaches and ocean water from Las Flores to Santa Monica State Beach and exercising caution at beaches further south, at least to Dockweiler State Beach," the nonprofit agency warned. The nonprofit agency's findings sound the alarm for heavy metals found after testing that include aluminum, iron, selenium, and manganese that "were elevated above drinking water standards, sometimes as much as 10x the limit." Along with those heavy metals, arsenic, copper, and zinc were found at levels that pose a threat to marine life, most significantly at Will Rogers State Beach and Topanga Beach, the spots where the Environmental Protection Agency relocated wildfire debris in the aftermath of the blazes that devoured 37 miles of the Pacific Palisades and Malibu coastline. The Palisades fire also left a dozen people the Bay's report also conflicts with findings released by the Los Angeles County public health officials stating that testing on ocean water samples collected on Jan. 22 and Jan. 27 "found no risks to human health." Those samples were taken before this week's significant rainfall, which sends raw sewage and fire debris into the ocean. Last year the City of Los Angeles agreed to pay a total of $20.8 million to fix issues at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant after a 2021 spill spiraled millions of gallons of wastewater into Santa Monica Bay.
