During the visit, President Murmu will lay a wreath at the Basilica of Saint Peter on April 25 as a mark of homage. On April 26, she will attend the funeral Mass at Saint Peter's Square, joining world leaders and dignitaries in paying their final respects to the late pontiff. India joins global mourning for Pope Francis Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, triggering an outpouring of grief worldwide. Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi offered heartfelt condolences, recalling Pope Francis's enduring affection for India and his legacy of compassion and spiritual leadership. On April 22, Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, visited the Apostolic Nunciature (Embassy of the Holy See) in New Delhi to sign the condolence book. India has also declared three days of State Mourning in memory of the late Pope. President Isaias Afwerki has sent a message of heartfelt condolences to the Vatican, on behalf of the people and Government of the State of Eritrea and on his own behalf, on the sad news of the passing away of His Holiness Pope Francis. In his message to His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of the State of the Holy See, President Isaias Afwerki paid tribute to Pope Francis 'whose distinguished life was dedicated to the service of humanity and especially to advance the cause of social justice for marginalized segments of our global society'. President Isaias further expressed his condolences, on this sad occasion, to His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and through him, to all the Cardinals, the clergy and all faithful members of the Roman Catholic Church around the world.
