Annual Memorial May walk honors fallen heroes and first responders in NYC
NEW YORK (PIX11) – It was a walk of remembrance of heroes, past and present. Carry the Load, a non-profit organization that honors fallen heroes and first responders, sponsored the annual Memorial May walk.
About 1,000 people, young and old, walked downtown, traveling about two miles from midtown to Liberty Park.

Carrying an American flag, veteran Ken Glasgow beamed, 'The mission we're on is to bring back the sanctity of Memorial Day. The reason for Memorial Day is more than barbecues, beer, and parties.'They carried their patriotic pride on their backpacks, on their socks, and in their hearts.
Each year, thousands of people join 'Carry the Load' across the country. On this day, similar walks were scheduled on Staten Island, Perth Amboy, and Metuchen, New Holley, Co-Founder of the non-profit group, explained, 'Carry the Load is a term we use. We're all carrying someone's memory; that's why we started this in 2011. Through these events, we raise money for various non-profits that are serving military veterans, first responders, and families across the country.'Scheduled each year weeks before the nation pauses on Memorial Day, Carry the Load organizers say they stretch out across 48 states with events that keep the memories alive.
Bo Delacruz joined the walk to show his support, 'It means a lot to me because sometimes I think we forget about our veterans, forget our first responders, to be out here. A group like this supports this memorial a lot.'Organization founders say Carry the Load was started of anger and frustration for a nation that they felt had forgotten the true meaning of Memorial Elliott heads the Global Military & Veteran Affairs unit at JP Morgan Chase. He reflected, 'This is an opportunity to remember, to reflect, to tell stories about those we no longer have. We use the stories we tell as our way of not forgetting them.'
This march will be replicated in dozens of cities all across the country over the next several weeks. Everyone will then converge on Dallas on Memorial Day following a 24-hour ruck or backpack march that symbolizes carrying the weight of those lost in the nation's battles.
