10 Hospitalized in Multistate Listeria Outbreak Linked to Over 80 Ready-to-Eat Foods, FDA Says
Fresh & Ready Foods recalls over 80 sandwiches and snacks amid multistate Listeria outbreak At least 10 people were hospitalized after eating potentially contaminated ready-to-eat products Affected items were sold in four states and linked to a California production facilityA multistate outbreak of Listeria infections has prompted Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC to voluntarily recall a wide range of ready-to-eat sandwiches and snacks. According to a press release published by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on Sunday, May 11, at least 10 people have been hospitalized with Listeria monocytogenes infections. All 10 are believed to have eaten products linked to the outbreak, according to the FDA and CDC. No deaths have been reported. Short-term symptoms of Listeria include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria is also an infection known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The recalled items were sold under brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away. The affected products were distributed from April 18 to April 28 across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington, with the 'Use By' dates listed between April 22 and May 19, 2025. The outlined foods are salads, bisto boxes, and snacks. The full list of 86 products can be found on the FDA website. As noted by the FDA, these products were commonly available at retailers and food service locations, including convenience stores, hospitals, hotels, airports, and airlines. Officials reopened the investigation in April after finding Listeria at the company's San Fernando, Calif., facility during a routine inspection. Genetic testing allegedly confirmed it was the same strain making people sick. Consumers and businesses are urged not to eat, sell, or serve the recalled foods and to dispose of the product immediately. Surfaces and containers that also came into contact with them should be thoroughly cleaned, as bacteria can survive in cold temperatures and spread easily. Read the original article on People

Listeria outbreak in California and Nevada hospitalizes 10, major LA firm recalls premade sandwiches, snacks
At least 10 people in the US have been sickened in a listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat food products, and a producer is voluntarily recalling several products, federal officials said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Saturday that federal, state and local officials are investigating the outbreak linked to foods produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC of San Fernando, California. The FDA says the 10 people who fell ill were in California and Nevada, and required hospitalization. The agency said the products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington at locations including retailers and food service points of sale, including hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports and by airlines. Listeria symptoms usually start within two weeks of eating contaminated food. Mild cases can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting and diarrhea, while more severe symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Federal officials said they started investigating the recent outbreak last year but didn't have enough evidence to identify a source of the infections. They said the investigation was reopened in April when FDA investigators found listeria in samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods that matched the strain from the outbreak. Fresh & Ready Foods said in a news release that it took immediate corrective actions including removing equipment to address the issue. The FDA found that six of the 10 people who got sick had been hospitalized before becoming ill with listeria. The FDA found that items made by Fresh & Ready Foods had been served in at least three of the health care facilities where the patients had been previously treated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the test samples from sick patients were collected from December 2023 to September 2024. Fresh & Ready voluntarily recalled several products, which can be identified by 'use by' dates ranging from April 22 to May 19 of this year under the brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go and Fresh Take Crave Away.

Listeria outbreak hospitalizes 10 in California and Nevada, sparks major food recall
A listeria outbreak hospitalized at least 10 people in California and Nevada, prompting a voluntary recall of over 80 ready-to-eat products by Fresh & Ready Foods. The recall affected sandwiches, snack boxes and pastas sold between April 22 and May 19. The items, sold under the brands Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away, were distributed in California, Nevada, Arizona and Washington state, including in airports, hospitals, hotels, college campuses and specialty grocery stores such as Costco. 'Fresh & Ready Foods has taken immediate corrective actions including removing equipment to address this issue to ensure ongoing food safety and compliance with FDA guidance,' the company said in its recall notice. Of the 10 reported cases, eight of the hospitalizations were in California and two were in Nevada. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation in January 2024 but were unable to find the source of the outbreak. However, the investigation was reopened in April when listeria was found on equipment at Fresh & Ready Foods during a routine inspection. Genome sequencing confirmed that the strain found at the company matched the outbreak strain. Listeria infections can cause severe symptoms, including fever, nausea, and muscle aches, and can lead to complications like miscarriage in pregnant women. At-risk groups, including older adults and people with weakened immune systems, are urged to seek medical attention if symptoms arise. Consumers who purchased the recalled products are advised to dispose of them immediately and sanitize any surfaces they may have touched. The FDA's investigation is ongoing, with further updates expected.
