Northern Ont. speeder gets served – with tickets, not dinner

A driver in Greater Sudbury learned the hard way that speeding isn't the fastest way to get dinner on the table after been stopped by local police on May 23, 2025. (Greater Sudbury Police Service/Facebook) A driver in Greater Sudbury learned the hard way that speeding isn't the fastest way to get dinner on the table. Police say the motorist was clocked going 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone Friday evening – in a rental car. When pulled over, the driver allegedly told officers they were in a hurry to 'cook for friends.' The Greater Sudbury Police Service confirmed some details of the incident in a brief telephone interview with CTV News on Sunday. Instead of a home-cooked meal, they were 'served' two Part 3 summonses for stunt driving and speeding, along with a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment, police said in a social media post on Saturday. Under provincial law, if convicted, penalties could include a fine of $2,000 to $10,000, a licence suspension of one to three years, and up to six months in jail. The driver would also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs, and a mandatory driver improvement course – or licence cancellation. Police did not provide any identifying details about the driver or where the vehicle was rented. The officer was also unable to confirm whether the dinner was delayed or 'well done' by the time the motorist arrived. 'Speed limits aren't suggestions – even if the risotto is getting cold,' police quipped in their post, signing off with a cheeky: '#Cooked.'
