Tropical Storm Andrea tracker: 1st named storm of the 2025 season forms in the Atlantic
Andrea has become the first named storm of the hurricane season to form in the Atlantic Ocean, the National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday. According to the latest update from the NHC, Andrea is located about 1,205 miles west of the Azores, an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic. 'Andrea is moving toward the east-northeast near 17 mph (28 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue for the next day or so,' meteorologists said. Andrea is currently a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph. It would become a hurricane if it gains maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or greater. It will be a 'short-lived' tropical storm, according to forecasters. 'The intensity forecast holds Andrea at tropical storm strength today, with the system weakening into a post-tropical remnant low by Wednesday morning because of the cold waters and dissipating shortly thereafter,' the hurricane center said. It is expected to weaken beginning Tuesday night and dissipate by Wednesday night, according to the NHC. There are currently no hazards affecting land, and no current coastal watches or warnings in effect. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, according to the NHC. 'The first named storm typically forms in mid- to late June, the first hurricane tends to form in early to mid-August, and the first major hurricane forms in late August or early September,' the hurricane center says. Meanwhile, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, there has been a flurry of activity with a total of five named storms before the third week of June. Alvin was the first named tropical storm of 2025 formed in the Pacific at the end of May.

Weather tracker: Mexico's Pacific coast hit by tropical storm and hurricane
While the western Atlantic has experienced a quiet start to the hurricane season, the eastern Pacific has recently become fairly active, producing a tropical storm and a category 4 hurricane within a few days. The first and weaker of these systems, Tropical Storm Dalila, developed into a tropical storm late last week. Although this storm stayed off the coast of Mexico and was relatively weak to other storms that have developed in this region, Dalila brought flooding and mudslides to the resort town of Acapulco, in western Mexico. On Tuesday, Hurricane Erick formed in the eastern Pacific, marking the fifth named storm in the region. Erick rapidly strengthened off the west coast of Mexico into a category 2 hurricane on Wednesday, before transitioning into a category 4 hurricane on Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of about 140mph. Despite having been downgraded to category 3 by the time it made landfall over the state of Oaxaca, sustained wind speeds still reached almost 130mph, causing major disruption. Large waves were produced by Erick, with the popular surfing spot Puerto Escondido seeing waves breaking at over 20ft (about 6 metres). Up to 400mm of rain is expected to fall through the course of the hurricane's passing, bringing further flooding and landslides to areas that were already affected by Dalila late last week and earlier this week. Forecasts indicate the hurricanewill deintensify as it pushes north-westwards across mountainous terrain in Mexico. The tropical eastern Pacific is expected to continue to be active through the rest of June, with potential development areas being watched by the National Hurricane Center. In contrast, the Atlantic is expected to remain quiet for a time, but is still forecast to produce an above-average number of storms and hurricanes. Typhoon Wutip, which developed in the South China Sea last week as the first typhoon of the season, moved north-eastwards through south-east China last Sunday and Monday, resulting in the death of seven people. Although the system weakened to a remnant low soon after making landfall with China, it continued to bring flooding, with 70,000 people evacuated as Huaiji county was placed on its highest level of flood alert.

More than half of the county's roads were submerged and power and internet outages were widespread. The Suijiang River overflowed in an urban area, turning wide swaths of streets into canals. Aerial footage showed high-rise apartment buildings and leafy green trees sticking up from a sea of mud-colored water. In some parts, the water reached about halfway up the first floor and left only the tops of cars visible. Huaiji County is near the border with the Guangxi region and about 140 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of Guangzhou , a major industrial and port city that is the provincial. Tropical storm Wutip brought heavy rain to the region and was followed by monsoon rains earlier this week. Five people died in Guangxi in two landslides triggered by the tropical storm last weekend. A rescue worker interviewed on a livestream by the Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper said his team needed to evacuate seriously ill patients from a hospital. The team had delivered milk powder and water to a woman with a newborn baby and was sending supplies to dozens of children and elderly people who were at a school.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, and much like last year, the FOX 35 Storm Team expects a lot of ocean heat content to fuel the potential for an above-average season. Experts at both the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Colorado State University (CSU) share a similar outlook: What we know NOAA's hurricane forecast: 13-19 named storms 6-10 hurricanes 3-5 major hurricanes (Cat. 3 or higher) CSU's hurricane forecast: 17 named tropical storms Of which, 9 become hurricanes Of which, 4 reach "major" hurricane strength (Cat. 3 or higher) Big picture view According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, an average Atlantic hurricane season sees: 14 named tropical storms 7 hurricanes 3 "major" hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) Dig deeper There are a multitude of factors in the atmosphere that will heighten the chance of an above-average season. The climate pattern has been shifting, and it's looking like we're going to remain in the Neutral Phase of ENSO. With that, we typically see reduced wind shear in the Atlantic Basin which means storms can form and strengthen rapidly. That strengthening is only exacerbated by the warmer than average ocean temperatures. That along with more active Western African Monsoon can help spin-up more tropical systems.
