Belgians accused of stealing wind from Dutch turbines
Belgians who view their Dutch neighbours to the north as stereotypically stingy, arrogant and noisy may have found a novel way to take the wind out of the Netherlands' sails. As the North Sea fills with offshore renewable energy farms, Belgians have been accused of stealing wind from Dutch turbines. A huge expansion of wind power in the region is having an impact on atmospheric stability and affecting the wind in the wake of wind farms, snatching power from neighbouring turbines. Some wind farms in Belgium are taking up to 3 per cent of generating power from Dutch installations, posing the risk of future conflicts over air currents. 'A wind turbine is designed to extract wind from the air. If you measure behind a wind

Turbine components arrive for P.E.I. wind farm expansion
Turbine components for the Eastern Kings Wind Farm expansion project have started to arrive in P.E.I. (Source: PEI Energy Corporation) Prince Edward Island residents should expect to see turbine components being transported on roads as the Eastern Kings Wind Farm expansion continues. The provincial government says turbine components are being unloaded in Georgetown and will be taken to East Point later this week. Drivers are told to expect delays due to the oversized loads on the roads. Additional components are expected to arrive in P.E.I. in June. Spencer Long, engineering project manager from the PEI Energy Corporation, said the expanded wind farm will deliver roughly 120 gigawatt hours per year. 'The energy generated from this new wind farm will be enough to power about 10,000 Island homes,' Long said in an email. 'The wind farm will also assist in stabilizing the cost of electricity over time. Together, the four existing wind farms developed by the PEI Energy Corporation generate more than 150 million kilowatt-hours of emission-free electricity per year for Island consumers. 'Our wind farms generate annual revenue of approximately $14 million for the province. The Eastern Kings Wind Farm expansion is expected to generate $10 million in revenue on top of that.' According to the energy corporation's website, heavy cranes will be used to install the turbines from July to September. The Eastern Kings Wind Farm has been operating 10 turbines since 2006. Wind Peak is the 'biggest and baddest' ship around, says captain
The captain of a huge ship docked in Hull has described it affectionately as "the biggest and baddest" Southwell, from the Beverley area, is master of the Wind Peak, a purpose-built vessel that is being used to transport components to the Sofia offshore wind farm in the North said he was proud to be back in Hull after spending 20 years at sea."We plan to be on this project for the next year and it is certainly nice for me, being local, to come in and out of Hull," he added. "It's the first time I have done it other than [on] the ferry." The BBC's Richard Stead was shown around the vessel, which is 162m (530ft) long and 60m (196ft) was built for Cadeler, a Danish firm that installs offshore wind farms, and left a shipyard in China last summer before arriving in Hull in March. The Wind Peak is so large, it can carry enough equipment to build six turbines at a time. Mr Southwell and his crew construct them and then connect them to the grid. They live on the ship for four weeks at a time, before taking four weeks' Southwell admitted he is looking forward to being closer to his wife, 21-month-old son and relatives in East Yorkshire, after being so far away from home at sea. "I enjoy the fact that many of my friends and relatives can see the vessel from their homes," he added of the new local landmark. Mr Southwell said it took about 14 hours for the Wind Peak to reach the Dogger Bank, where the farm is being built."It is a fair way out, but there's a lot of activity out of there," he added. "Interestingly for this area, the electricity that's generated by these turbines runs through the substation ashore at Skipsea and then up to Creyke Beck [in Cottingham], and that's where it's plugged into the National Grid."Listen to highlights from Hull and East Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

XAI wants to bring more gas turbines to Memphis
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company is considering adding dozens more methane gas turbines to its operations in South Memphis, according to documents xAI submitted to EPA in March. Already under fire from Memphis community groups over its use of 35 methane turbines without Clean Air Act permits or pollution controls to power its first supercomputer, xAI is now evaluating bringing dozens more generators to a second site in just 11 miles away. Documents submitted to EPA in March show xAI is considering bringing enough turbines to the second site to generate 1.56 gigawatts of power — more capacity than the local Tennessee Valley Authority's gas-fired Allen Combined Cycle Plant. Generating that amount of power would require 40 to 90 turbines based on the make and model of turbines xAI said it plans to use in documents submitted to EPA and obtained via the Freedom of Information Act by the nonprofit legal group Southern Environmental Law Center. Advertisement The turbines would help make the data center on Tulane Road 'a grass roots operation and facility' that will 'produce its own electricity,' Trinity Consultants, which works for xAI, wrote in the preapplication modeling protocol. Such protocols are often submitted to EPA in advance of a formal permit application to demonstrate that air quality standards won't be violated.
