Tage Thompson's OT Goal ‘Didn't Feel Real; It Still Doesn't'
Like a lot of the members of the team that represented the USA at this year's IIHF World Championship, Tage Thompson has had success at the U-18 and U-20 levels internationally, but gold had eluded him at this level. From two previous trips to the Worlds, he had taken home two bronze medals. Other players were in the same boat, and the way they spoke for the last two weeks, they thought it was time to change that. 'It's been a fun tournament,' Thompson said when it was all over. 'We have an unbelievable group of guys in that locker room and I couldn't be happier to be on this side of things with them.' Thompson himself had a huge tournament. At each of his two previous World Championships, he scored one goal each. This time he scored six, tied for the team lead with Frank Nazar. The sixth goal, of course, was the golden goal – the only goal of the final against Switzerland. Tage Thompson makes USA GOLDEN! 👏🏆#MensWorlds #IIHF @usahockey — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) May 25, 2025 'Honestly, I don't even know,' he smiled when asked to describe his feelings when he saw the puck go in. 'Just pure excitement, pure joy. It didn't feel real. It still doesn't. I'm just excited to get into that locker room and celebrate with the guys.' This was a talented group, but the U.S. team often is. Early results, like the 3-0 loss to Switzerland in the group stage and the 6-5 overtime win over Norway didn't look necessarily give the outside observer reason to think this year would be different, but the team got better as the tournament progressed. The USA came from behind to beat Czechia in its last group game, then rather convincingly beat two more legitimate gold-medal contenders in Finland and host Sweden to reach the final. 'I think anytime you come to this tournament, you should come here to win,' said Thompson. 'I don't know if that's always been the case in the past, but I think with this group, we've taken this very seriously and we came here with the goal and the mindset that we were going to win gold and we weren't going to be denied. 'I think everybody in that room bought into that, and I think we felt from day one that we were going to win this thing.' Photo © Timothy T. Zach Werenski Says Johnny Gaudreau 'Deserves This Gold Medal More Than Anyone' Zach Werenski had a great World Championship. He missed the first couple of games but it was no coincidence that the U.S. team got much better after he arrived. In seven games, Werenski had six points and was voted to the tournament all-star team by accredited media and named Top Defenseman by the tournament directorate.

U.S. men's hockey team wins first standalone world championship since 1933
The U.S. men's hockey team won its first standalone world championship since 1933, beating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in Sunday's final in Stockholm. Tage Thompson scored the golden goal to give the U.S. its first major tournament title since the 1996 World Cup. Its last Olympic title came in 1980 with the Miracle on Ice. Goalie Jeremy Swayman got the shutout. Tage Thompson makes USA GOLDEN! 👏🏆#MensWorlds #IIHF @usahockey For a time, the Olympics also counted as world championships, so the U.S.' Olympic medals in 1952 (silver), 1956 (silver) and 1960 (gold) are also world championship medals. The U.S. was eliminated from worlds in the quarterfinals last year. The Americans were fourth at worlds in 2022 and 2023 and made the semifinals 13 times since the IIHF reinstituted a bracketed playoff round in 1992. They lost 12 semifinals in a row before beating Sweden in Stockholm on Saturday. The U.S. team at these worlds featured two players from last February's 4 Nations Face-Off: Swayman and defenseman Zach Werenski, who led all players at 4 Nations with six points. Many top NHL players miss worlds because the tournament takes place during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Others choose to rest after the NHL season. The U.S. head coach at worlds is the San Jose Sharks' Ryan Warsofsky. The U.S. has already qualified for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, where NHL players are expected to participate for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Games. The U.S. head coach for the Olympics is the New York Rangers' Mike Sullivan. Nick Zaccardi,

U.S. edges Canada in women's hockey world championship final in overtime classic
Tessa Janecke lifted the U.S. to the women's hockey world title over rival Canada, scoring the golden goal in a three-on-three overtime period. Janecke scored 17 minutes into the 20-minute period for a 4-3 win in Czechia on Sunday. The golden goal by Tessa Janecke! 🔥🇺🇸🥇 #WomensWorlds #IIHF @usahockey Nine of the last 14 finals between the U.S. and Canada have gone to overtime between the Olympics and World Championships dating to 2011. Either the U.S. or Canada has won all 24 world titles. The rivals met in the final in 23 of the 24 editions dating to the first worlds in 1990. In the third period Sunday, Canadian Sarah Fillier tied it at 3-3 with 5:48 left. That came nearly 10 minutes after a collision between U.S. goalie Aerin Frankel and Canadian forward Laura Stacey outside of the crease. Stacey was given a two-minute penalty for charging. Frankel was replaced by Gwyneth Philips, who all of a sudden was playing in an international knockout game for the first time. Laura Stacey entre SOLIDEMENT en collision avec la gardienne américaine Aerin Frankel ! 😯#ChampionnatduMondedeHockeyFéminin The U.S. goals in regulation came from Caroline Harvey, Abbey Murphy and Taylor Heise. The U.S. went 7-0 at worlds, going undefeated for the first time since 2019. Canada had won four of the previous five Olympic or world titles, its most dominant stretch in the rivalry since the 2000s. Now the U.S., with a world championship roster more than two years younger than Canada's, will look to reclaim the Olympic title next February. Canada won the 2022 Olympic final 3-2, after which the U.S. program underwent many changes. John Wroblewski succeeded Joel Johnson as head coach, and several young players ascended. Heise went from being cut from the 2022 Olympic team to MVP of the summer 2022 World Championship. Harvey went from being the youngest player on the 2022 Olympic team (and playing the least of the team's healthy skaters) to being named the best defender of the 2023 Worlds. Laila Edwards made her senior national team debut in November 2023 and was MVP of the 2024 World Championship. The goalie Frankel, who didn't make the 2022 Olympic team, started World Championship finals in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Janecke is the latest. The 20-year-old Penn State junior made her senior national team debut in December 2022. Nick Zaccardi,

Lacey Eden: ‘Adversity Isn't The Worst Thing In The World'
In Wednesday's In Thursday's quarterfinal game at the IIHF Women's World Championship, the USA outshot Germany 51-12 and dominated territorially, but ran into strong goaltending from Sandra Abstreiter and a disciplined German team and escaped with a closer-than-expected 3-0 victory. 'It can be frustrating but you have to be ready for that and overcome some adversity,' said Lacey Eden, who scored the USA's second goal. 'Adversity isn't the worst thing in the world going into the quarters and we got the win – that's all that matters.' Lacey Eden adds another with her first goal of the #WomensWorlds 🚨💪 #IIHF @usahockey — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) April 17, 2025 Despite being 22 years of age – she turns 23 in early May – and a college hockey player, this is already Eden's fifth World Championship. Her first was 2021 in the bubble in Calgary and won a gold medal in 2023 in Brampton, Ont. In the four years she's played at the University of Wisconsin, Eden has had a tremendous amount of success, being part of three national championship teams and reaching the final the other year. There are four other Wisconsin players on Team USA – Kirsten Simms, Laila Edwards, Caroline Harvey and goaltender Ava McNaughton – as well as a few others on opposing nations. 'It was great coming off of a great season there but, once you get here, you just focus in on the World Championship,' she said. The Hockey News' Ian Kennedy has ranked Eden sixth for this year's PWHL Draft, behind current USA teammates Abbey Murphy and Haley Winn. As is the case with Murphy, Eden's decision on whether enter this year's draft is of great interest to the women's hockey world but, like Murphy, she isn't ready to make that decision public yet, assuring that an announcement will be coming 'soon enough.' Abbey Murphy After 2-Goal Game Vs Czechia: 'We're Here For One Thing' Abbey Murphy from the University of Minnesota is the consensus first-overall pick in the 2025 PWHL draft and she showed why against tournament host Czechia on Friday night. Before a sell-out crowd of 5,859 at Budvar Arena, Murphy scored the USA's first two goals in a 4-0 win.

Hilary Knight Breaks Wickenheiser's World Championship Career Assists Record
Entering the very last group-stage game of the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship between the USA and Switzerland, Hayley Wickenheiser's career total of 49 assists was in serious jeopardy. The USA's Kendall Coyne-Schofield trailed her by only one point and Hilary Knight by two. A third player, Canadian Marie-Philip Poulin, also trailed by two but was idle on this day. In the USA's 5-0 victory, Knight recorded three assists, breaking the tie with Poulin and passing both Coyne-Schofield and Wickenheiser to become, for now, the all-time assists leader in the Women's World Championships with 50. Another goal for @usahockey and history made! 🇺🇸 Hilary Knight is now the all-time assists leader at the #WomensWorlds! 🔥💪 #IIHF — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) April 15, 2025 'I think something in the room just keeps you young and makes you remember why you signed up,' Knight said thoughtfully after the game. 'To be able to play for as long as I have is something special and I understand that every single day now as I'm getting older. It's such a privilege.' For her part, Coyne-Schofield scored two goals – the two Knight did not figure on – but did not register an assist. 'I can't speak more of Kendall Coyne-Schofield, Alex Carpenter, Lee Stecklein, Brianne Decker,' said Knight. 'These are the OGs. It's really special that some of those guys are still here.' Lee Stecklein: 'Just To Be Back Here, I'm Really Enjoying Every Minute Of It' Defenders accounted for both of the USA's goals in a 2-1 win over Canada on Sunday night at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship. 'It's just incredible,' said USA teammate Laila Edwards who currently plays for the University of Wisconsin, Knight's alma mater. 'Being alongside her is such an honor. I can't even put it into words. We're all so blessed to be her teammate but, more imporantly, her friends. I think people mostly see how good she is as a player but she's a wonderful person and she deserves this honor, for sure.' For now, the record belongs to Knight but, as mentioned, two players that are active in the tournament are within three assists of her. With the USA playing Germany and Canada facing Japan in the quarterfinals, it's not out of the question that Coyne-Schofield or Poulin could have a big game assists-wise. Abbey Murphy After 2-Goal Game Vs Czechia: 'We're Here For One Thing' Abbey Murphy from the University of Minnesota is the consensus first-overall pick in the 2025 PWHL draft and she showed why against tournament host Czechia on Friday night. Before a sell-out crowd of 5,859 at Budvar Arena, Murphy scored the USA's first two goals in a 4-0 win. Of course, Poulin is also in pursuit of another Wickenheiser record – that being most points by a Canadian player in the Women's World Championships. 'I've played against her, I've played with her, she's a great player,' Knight said of Poulin, who was her teammate with the Montreal Canadiennes of the CWHL. 'What we do on this level is extremely special, what we've done on the professional level is special as well. It's a great conversation for both of us to be a part of.' In an amazing tournament where all sorts of scoring records are falling, Michelle Karvinen has already broken the Finnish record for all-time points in the Women's Worlds. 'She's a great player too,' Knight said. 'I've played against her for many, many years and I was joking around with her that she's gotta come to the PWHL, so that would be a lot of fun. 'I hope fans know they're watching some legendary careers,' Knight said sentimentally. 'It's so special to be able to play against players like that. It's so encouraging for the game.' Michelle Karvinen Breaks Finnish National Team Scoring Record Michelle Karvinen, captain of the Finnish women's national team, scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:27 of the second period of Finland's 2-1 victory over Switzerland in IIHF Women's World Championship action on Monday.
