Teal MP Zoe Daniel could now WIN seat of Goldstein weeks after her premature victory dance went viral

Liberal Tim Wilson's lead over Teal MP Zoe Daniel has narrowed to less than 400 votes, as leaked WhatsApp messages from his camp reveal panic over the count. Wilson, who lost the seat of Goldstein in Melbourne 's inner south-east suburbs to Daniel in 2022, declared victory over a week ago, on May 7, with a swipe at his Teal rival for not conceding. His triumphant speech came after the Climate200-backed MP prematurely declared victory herself on election night, dancing on stage and telling her volunteers that 'hope wins'. She subsequently walked back her victory claims yet resisted conceding, even when all media organisations called it for her Liberal challenger. But the latest count perhaps justifies Daniel's decision not to concede as Wilson's lead has now plunged from around 1,200 to just 368, with over 1,200 votes still to be counted, plus any more postals yet to arrive. On Wednesday night, Daniel insisted she was still in the fight. 'We have clawed back from almost a 1500 vote margin on Friday to 401 tonight,' she wrote in a post to Instagram. 'I have every finger crossed that a batch of international postal votes lands in the next 2 days among a few other things that need to go our way.' The former journalist said she was grateful to her volunteers who had been 'hanging over every, single, vote'. As the race tightened dramatically, Wilson also sought to rally his supporters 'The only thing that matters is scrutineering to knock out informal votes being counted for the Teals,' he wrote to his volunteers in WhatsApp messages leaked to The Age newspaper. 'They are knocking out votes for us with extreme precision. 'If a full recount occurs we will need a massive scrutineering team because every vote will need to be scrutinised and it will be a race to see who can knock out the most votes. 'Let's hope that does not happen.' An automatic recount occurs if the margin of victory is less than 100 votes. In other messages, Wilson insisted 'we are calm'. 'We never wanted a drop in margin like this, but we were prepared for it,' he added. If Wilson were to lose the seat it would be a remarkable turnaround for the 45-year-old. At the start of the week he considered throwing his hat into the ring for the Liberal Party leadership. The Goldstein count has certainly been a rollercoaster. Daniel danced wildly to 'Titanium' by David Guetta on election night. Despite being forced to walk back her declaration of victory, she remained in the dancing mood. The Teal MP shared a video of her all-female office dancing wildly to Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club on Monday last week. 'It's a resilience test that's for sure,' she captioned the video. 'But no matter what, we will keep dancing. Daniel, 52, is a former longtime ABC foreign correspondent turned politician who campaigned on fighting climate change and addressing integrity issues in politics. She was elected among a wave of so-called Teal independents in 2022, defeating Wilson 52.87 per cent to 47.13 per cent. Wilson, 45, is a former assistant minister in Scott Morrison's government as the member for Goldstein from 2016 to 2022. He is a former Human Rights Commissioner and before that had a senior position at the right-wing think tank, the Institute of Public Affairs.

Interior Minister Hajjar says Tripoli vote count nearing completion, denies fraud

Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar announced that the vote count for the Tripoli municipal elections is nearing completion. Speaking ahead of the Cabinet session, Hajjar assured that "all ballots are accounted for—nothing has disappeared." He explained that a full recount was necessary in some polling stations but stressed that there was no tampering or fraud. "Due to the absence of some election staff, we had to rely on others who lacked experience in the electoral process, which led to some irregularities during the count," he said. "This is a fact we do not deny. However, the process occurred in the presence of candidate representatives and media outlets, so there was no room for falsification." He noted that the preliminary counting committees, which are presided over by judges, ordered recounts wherever they found discrepancies. "These committees made an enormous effort, and the recount took a long time, but it was essential to ensure transparent and accurate results," he added. When asked whether a partial re-run of the elections might occur, Hajjar responded: "The Interior Ministry is not authorized to call for new elections. Those who wish to contest the results can do so before the State Council once the final results are announced."
