Religious statue bashed outside of clinic in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A religious statue with special meaning to the Guadalupe Clinic was destroyed early Thursday morning. It's the third time it's happened in five years, but this is the first time it's been caught on camera. Security footage shows a man smashing the statue outside the clinic. 'The toolbelt generation:' why some young Kansans are opting for trade school 'My staff who get in early in the morning called me and said someone had bashed in the statue, and it just makes your heart sink,' said J.V. Johnston, the clinic's executive director. Johnston, a Wichita City Council member and vice mayor, says the statue means a great deal to the community. He posted the video in hopes of catching the person responsible. 'What's sad is that the statue was given to us by a patient of ours. Patients really love the image of our Lady of Guadalupe and took it upon themselves to give us that statue,' said Johnston. Johnston says the Guadalupe Clinic serves the most vulnerable population. 'At the clinic, we see people with absolutely no insurance and living within 200 percent of the federal poverty level,' said Johnston. 'So we see the very, very, very poorest people.' Johnston says he hopes the person responsible is caught so he can get the help he needs. 'The person who did it really needs our prayers,' said Johnston. 'They've obviously got some pent-up anger or some issues they need to deal with. But we need to probably catch them to get them to deal with it.' The statue is not just for decoration but holds spiritual significance. 'Our clinic is about 80 percent Hispanic. Our patient population is, and our Lady of Guadalupe is very, very special to that population. And therefore, it's very special to us,' said Johnston. As far as what's next, the vice mayor will be filing a police report. Johnston says he hopes someone will donate a replacement for the statue. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
