Man found dead in kangaroo, wallaby enclosure reportedly had 'history' of playing rough with animal
A man found dead with multiple blunt force injuries in a kangaroo and wallaby enclosure reportedly had a "history" of entering the space to play rough with one of the animals. The man — identified by officials as 52-year-old Eric Slate — was a relative of the animal's owner. He was killed on Friday evening in the fatal encounter that took place at 5 Star Farm, a South Carolina petting zoo located around 30 miles from Myrtle Beach, according to Fox Carolina. The animal believed to be responsible for Slate's death has not been euthanized, Horry County Councilmember Mark Causey told News13. The 5 Star Farm petting zoo — which has events listed on its website dating back more than 15 years — features animals like camels, ponies, llamas and more, according to its website. "The animal was not nor has been out of his secure enclosure," Robert Slate, owner of 5 Star Farm, wrote on Facebook. "At this time we do ask for respect and support for the family." The investigation is currently ongoing, and an autopsy has been ordered, according to Horry County Police. "There are a number of other animals at the incident location," Horry County Police said in a Facebook post. "All animals are accounted for and contained, and there is no risk to the community." The Horry County Police Department, the Horry County Coroner's Office and 5 Star Farm did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Man found dead in kangaroo enclosure with ‘blunt force injuries,' police say. How dangerous are they?
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A 52 year-old man was found dead inside a kangaroo and wallaby enclosure with 'multiple blunt force injuries,' at a South Carolina farm just outside of Loris, police said. The deceased, Eric State, was discovered in the facility, located on Highway 746, just before midnight, Horry County authorities said. An autopsy is planned as officers continue to investigate. REVIEW: 'Clown in a Cornfield' is campy, bloody fun Officials didn't immediately provide a location. An earlier report by police said the man entered an enclosure with the 'non-domesticated' animals. Horry County council member Dennis DiSabato told News13 Saturday a kangaroo was directly involved in State's death. While kangaroo and wallaby attacks aren't all that common, they can still happen. Back in 2022, a 77 year-old man was killed in Western Australia after reportedly being attacked by his pet kangaroo. At that time, University of Melbourne reported it was believed to be the first deadly kangaroo attack since 1936 in the country. The university explains that kangaroos are very strong, with 'powerful arms and massive feet' — not to mention long and sharp nails. While the iconic Australian animals are typically docile and prefer to be away from humans, they can attack if provoked and threatened. Where was Texas Roadhouse founded? All-in-all, University of Melbourne says fewer than five people per year in New South Wales seek medical attention for kangaroo-related injuries. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
