Storm Center PM Update: Storms Possible Monday; Cooler Tuesday

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — While we've had smoky skies over most of KELOLAND, we've still been able to get in on a warm day. It's little solace, considering we've also had to deal with poor air quality for a better part of the day. The good news is that we get a frontal boundary to come along by Monday to help sweep this smoke out of the region…so air quality is expected to improve as we head beyond the Monday outlook. The bad news is that we'll have to contend with showers and thunderstorms…especially in the second half of the day. Some of those storms may become strong to severe in central and eastern KELOLAND. A 'Slight Risk' for severe weather is in place for most of eastern and southeastern South Dakota, the Marshall and Luverne areas in Minnesota, and portions of northwestern Iowa. A 'Marginal Risk' surrounds that for areas around Mission, Redfield, Sisseton, and Worthington. Damaging gusts and large hail are the main concerns, though there's always a non-zero isolated tornado risk. Please stay weather aware. Showers and a storm or two may linger through the first half of the day on Tuesday to the east and southeast, while West River locations get in on a pretty quiet and pleasant day with cooler temperatures. The pattern flips on Wednesday, with a mainly quiet day East River and scattered showers moving back into the picture in central and western KELOLAND. Daily chances for showers and a storm or two on both sides of the river will return by Thursday and stick around through the first half of the weekend. While no day is a total wash-out, you'll want to watch and see if you need to bring an umbrella where you go. All the while, temperatures will be much closer to average as we head through the second half of the week and into next weekend. Beyond the 7 day forecast, odds for near to above average temperatures are favored West River, while we have better chances to remain near average to the east. Weather Aware Tuesday: Severe storms likely

Tonight: Our weather will remain quiet tonight with patchy dense fog developing under a partly cloudy sky with lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. A sprinkle or light shower is possible along the Hwy-278 corridor around sunrise Monday morning. Monday: Outside of a sprinkle or two over our northern counties very early Monday, we should all stay dry. Temperatures will be much warmer in the upper 80s, feeling more like the low to middle 90s with partly cloudy skies. This Week: A strong cold front will approach the region on Tuesday, providing another day of summer-like heat. Highs on Tuesday will approach 90° over parts of the area while most of us hang out in the upper 80s, feeling like the low/mid 90s with muggy air in place. This warm, moist air will make an unstable environment late Tuesday into early Wednesday, providing a potentially significant severe weather risk. Weather Aware Tuesday Night: 4 PM Tuesday – 1 AM Wednesday Scattered storms are expected to either form over northern Mississippi shortly after lunch on Tuesday before organizing into a gusty line of storms that will pose a high risk for damaging winds in excess of 60-70 mph across central Alabama starting Tuesday evening. There will also be a risk for up to ping pong ball size hail and potentially a tornado or two depending on where storms decide to form at. Once the line of storms organize together, they'll quickly move southeast into late Tuesday night before likely exiting central Alabama shortly after midnight. The confidence in regards to timing is still low to medium, so be sure to check back for updates as the timing becomes more specific. By Wednesday, lower humidity and refreshing air spills southward, drying things out and returning us to sunshine for the second half of the week. Highs will fall into the upper 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s! The upcoming weekend becomes a bit tricky as northwest flow aloft appears to develop somewhere over the Tennessee River Valley. Where this pattern sets up will determine who could see a few complexes of storms similar to our weather this past weekend. We'll keep a low end threat for rain in the forecast for now and ramp up as needed over the coming days. Severe storms possible in Massachusetts on Saturday, latest weather forecast maps shows

In what may be the least surprising news you have heard all week, the Boston area, once again, can expect some rain in the weekend weather forecast. The WBZ weather team is highlighting Saturday as a NEXT Weather Alert day in Massachusetts. This will not be a washout or all-day rain. However, there is a risk for some heavy downpours and a few severe storms. Severe weather risk for Boston The Storms Prediction Center has placed most of Southern New England in a "marginal" risk for severe weather Saturday with a "slight" risk in extreme western Mass. and Connecticut. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston The timing of these storms is still a bit uncertain, our confidence in predicting the where and when will increase in the next 24 hours. For now, we would anticipate the typical time frame, between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., to be the most likely for storms. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Lighting, hail and damaging winds possible The air will be loaded with moisture, dewpoints will be the highest we have seen thus far approaching 70 degrees in some areas on Saturday. With this amount of moisture present, any storms that do form could contain some very heavy downpours. There is also a moderate risk of frequent lightning, small hail and some damaging winds within these storm cells. WBZ-TV graphic CBS Boston Much drier air will move in on Sunday. Next week looks to be a cool one with high temperatures in the 60s to start and perhaps, even lower by weeks' end. Stay with WBZ-TV, CBS News Boston and for the latest forecast.
