Rainy season underway in Kanto-Koshin, Hokuriku regions
Japan's weather officials say the rainy season appears to have begun in the Kanto-Koshin and Hokuriku regions. The Japan Meteorological Agency made the announcement at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Rain is falling in the regions due to the combination of a seasonal rain front and damp air. More rainy days are forecast for the coming week in these areas. The rainy season in the Kanto-Koshin region has arrived three days later than usual, but 11 days earlier than last year. In the Hokuriku region, it has arrived one day earlier than usual and 12 days earlier than in 2024.

Heavy rain pounds Kagoshima in southwestern Japan
Japanese weather officials are warning of mudslides and flooding due to heavy rain in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima. The Meteorological Agency says risks of life-threatening disasters are rising rapidly and is calling on residents to stay safe. The agency said on Monday clouds were developing over Kagoshima as warm and moist air flowed toward a seasonal rain front over a wide area. The officials issued an alert shortly after violent rainfall of 65 millimeters was observed in the southern part of the prefecture during a one-hour period to 7 p.m. on Monday. The rain front is expected to move northward and remain in western and eastern Japan through Wednesday, unleashing large amounts of rain on Kagoshima and other parts of the island of Kyushu. Weather officials forecast up to 200 millimeters of rain in northern Kyushu, 180 millimeters in southern Kyushu and the Kinki region, and 100 millimeters in the Chugoku region in the 24 hours through Tuesday evening. They are also calling on people to be alert for lightning strikes and violent gusts.

Heavy rain forecast in western and eastern Japan along Pacific coast on Sunday
Weather officials are warning of torrential rain on the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan through Sunday morning. They are calling on people to be on high alert for possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, lightning strikes and gusty winds including tornadoes. The Meteorological Agency says a low-pressure system accompanied by a front brought rain to western Japan and elsewhere on Saturday morning. In one hour before and after noon on Saturday, more than 50 millimeters of rain fell in Kagoshima Prefecture. Rain clouds also developed over the Shikoku region. In Kochi Prefecture, 63 millimeters of rain fell in Tosashimizu City in the one-hour period through 5 p.m. Kuroshio Town, also in the prefecture, had 46 millimeters of rain between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The low-pressure system is expected to pass over western Japan to eastern Japan through Sunday. A warm, humid air mass will flow in toward the low and the front, making atmospheric conditions extremely unstable. Some parts of western and eastern Japan, especially along the Pacific coast, may see hourly rainfall of more than 50 millimeters accompanied by localized thunder through Sunday morning. In the 24 hours through Sunday evening, the Kinki and Tokai regions can expect up to 180 millimeters of rain, and Shikoku will get up to 150 millimeters. Kanto-Koshin will have up to 120 millimeters.
