One word dominates the Met Office's new forecast for the coming month

One word dominates the Met Office's new long range forcast for the rest of May and most of June: Changeable. The forecaster's prediction for the next four weeks is that we're going to see some wide variation. In its forecast, the UK's respected weather forecasting body says we should expect rainy conditions, dry interludes, cooler temperatures but also some "very warm, perhaps hot" conditions. And that could bring thunderstorms. After weeks of sunshine this weekend's windy weather and some rain heralds a very changeable picture. READ MORE: Venomous snake bolts into sea from beneath paddleboard at popular Welsh beach READ MORE: Council crews to search bins and hand £70 fines to rule-breakers The Met Office long range forecast for the UK covers two periods. Firstly the coming fortnight to Sunday June 8. And then a second forecast for Monday, June 9 to Monday June 23. It says that in the next two weeks the weather will be "likely changeable with frontal systems running east into the UK will bring further spells of rain, with showery interludes in-between. Strong winds may also develop at times, particularly in the north and northwest. This weather will "increasingly track to the northwest of the country" with the south probably starting to see longer, drier interludes while the northwest continues to see more in the way of rain and at times strong winds, the Met Office adds. Temperatures are expected to be around normal overall for the time of year in June, but will be cooler in any prolonged periods of rainfall. Meanwhile there is the possibility of some very warm, perhaps hot conditions developing, especially in the south and these bring with them the chance of thunderstorms - so a very changeable picture. Wetter conditions tending to be across the northwest of the UK, with the south and southeast likely to see more in the way of dry weather. "Temperatures are most likely to be near normal or slightly above, perhaps with some hot spells at times, especially across the south. Forecasts for five days and beyond are written on the scale of the UK as a whole. This is because when looking at forecasts beyond five days into the future "the chaotic nature of the atmosphere starts to come into play", the Met Office said. Small weather events currently over the Atlantic can have potentially significant impacts on our weather in the UK in several days' time. So, whilst forecasters can still predictt the general feel of the weather to a relatively high level of accuracy, it's harder to offer local detail to as high a level of accuracy as for shorter range forecasts. The Met Office long range forecast, updated on a daily basis, offers an indication of how the weather might change, or be different from normal, (i.e. warmer, colder, wetter, drier) across the whole UK. UK weather: Brits to soak in rain ‘EVERY DAY' next week after Bank Holiday washout with heavy showers and 50mph winds

THE UK was battered by 50mph winds and heavy rain last night, as the country braces for wet weather. Forecasters have warned that it will rain every day next week, in what will be a very wet start to June. 4 4 The news comes after Britain experienced one of its driest Mays on record, with some parts of the country prepping for droughts. The North-West and North-East have also experienced their driest starts to the year since 1929, with Brits basking in sweltering 27C heats. According to Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell, though, that seasonal abnormality has come to an end. She said: "Last night's rain won't have brought May much closer to average. 'That being said, we still have a week left of May and we expect to see rain every day, so by the end of the month we could be closer to the monthly average." Heavy winds peaked at 50mph in the north of England on Saturday, while temperatures across the country dropped to a low of 15C. Some southern areas, including London, could experience highs of 21C on Wednesday and Thursday. However, Becky has warned that the warmer weather might not return until the school half-term. Temperatures will begin to rise after June 2, bringing an end to what is believed will be a very wet week. Over the last few months, Britain has experienced a variety of rare weather conditions with meteorologists warning of a tornado on May 21. One spokesperson said: "It's not out of the question that we could see a funnel cloud, maybe even a brief tornado across parts of the South East." UK could be hit by tornado, Met Office warns as thunderstorms & heavy rain bring end to dry spell – check areas at risk Tornadoes form when hot, humid air collides with cold, dry air. The cold air heads downwards, while the hot air rises - creating a funnel, which eventually spirals into a tornado. Due to the UK's landscape and normally temperate weather, tornadoes are a rarity in Britain. 4

Windy weather returns again this weekend

Calmer winds return all across New Mexico Friday. Winds start picking up again this weekend though with windy weather returning Sunday and Monday. It was still breezy across parts of New Mexico Thursday afternoon with wind gusts over 30 mph. Temperatures were slightly cooler today across most of the state, but a warm up started in northwest New Mexico. Tonight, the winds have calmed down with mostly clear skies and more cool overnight low temperatures. Smoke from a wildfire in eastern Arizona could again bring poor air quality to parts of western and central New Mexico tonight. Calmer conditions return Friday afternoon across New Mexico, with a stray wind gust up to 30 mph. Temperatures will start a warming trend all across the state as well that will continue into Saturday afternoon. Breezy winds will return across the state though Saturday. Strong winds will again develop Sunday and Monday afternoons with gusts as high as 30 mph to 50 mph. The strongest winds will be along and south of I-40. Up to 55 mph gusts are possible Monday. Areas of blowing dust are likely again across southern New Mexico both afternoons with possible road closures from low visibility. A high fire danger will also develop. Some good news is, isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado Sunday and Monday, but the rain chances should all stay north of I-40. Winds will be breezy, but not as strong, early next week. A cold front will move across New Mexico Sunday, bringing in cooler air to start next week. High pressure starts building over the state by Wednesday, bringing in very warm, dry, and calm weather into the second half of next week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
